Great news! Once Designer 2.0 is released I'll probably order the upgrade.

It looks amazing!

Let me ask a newbie question, what is the main difference between Holywood and Holywood Designer?

Hollywood is an interpreter/compiler for hollywood scripts. The interpreter is using lua which is a very powerful scripting language.

Designer is a wysiwyg editor for Hollywood presentations, programs. You may call it 'Visual Hollywood'. It is generates the scripts, executable programs for lots of Amiga and Amiga like platforms.

So the main difference is in a way of working with those two applications? Writing scripts vs. using the GUI? What you can do in Holywood that's not possible in Designer and vice versa?

@Amikit

You need Hollywood in order to use Hollywood Designer. Designer is a GUI for creating Hollywood presentations/scripts. Hollywood itself is the script interpreter. You can do everything Hollywood Designer does by writing scripts in EditPad. However, Designer makes it much easier to create scripts. Think of Designer as something like Powerpoint, but more powerful (at least IMHO). Possibly writing scripts directly might give you more control over what the script does, but Designer is pretty useful. My advice to people would be to get them both.

Are you sure? Isn't the Designer a standalone application independent from Holywood?

Well, it is stand alone. However, you won't be able to compile/preview/run your work without Hollywood. Hence, Designer by itself would be of very limited use.

Hollywood is a programming language.

Hollywood Designer is a Scala/PowerPoint clone that generates Hollywood scripts (which, obviously, require Hollywood to be run/compiled).

As for what one package can do but the other can't:

If you want to write a game, a GUI for a CLI program or stuff like that (i.e. "programs") you should use a programming language - that would be Hollywood.

If you want to create a Scala/PowerPoint like presentation, you should use Hollywood Designer. It doesn't offer anything Hollywood couldn't do on its own - in fact, it is actually limited to creating presentations, you can't use it to create a game or sth. like that - but it offers a nice, powerful, mouse driven WYSIWYG interface inspired by the likes of Scala or PowerPoint.

The Designer should be able to generate executables as well. I assume I don't need to buy Holywood too in this case...

I am very glad to see continued support and development of this fine application.

IMHO, Hollywood could very well be the single most important application that is left and still being developed for Amiga.

Thank you!

@Amikit

No, Hollywood Designer is a GUI, it does not include the compiler, which is part of Hollywood. You really do need Hollywood to use Designer.

as taken from the order page

Also, please keep in mind that Hollywood Designer and Malibu both require Hollywood 2.5. They do not work without it.

So you need Hollywood if you just want to write scripts but both if you want a GUI click and go ........Malibu is optional if you want to run old Scala presentations

Thanks! Now I see "Hollywood 1.9" in Holywood Designer requirements.

OK, except the screenshots, are there any executables demonstrating Holywood capabilities?

@AmiKit

Check out GlobalGladiators, and AmigaScrapBook. Both were made using Hollywood.

I should mention it that those are made with a pre 2.0 Hollywood. The 1.9 was a much limited version in every aspect compared to the 2.0+.

Aren't there any executable previews made with 2.0, or videos? I'd really like to see it in action before I invest so much money into the product.

@Amikit

The files I linked to include compiled executables (at least for OS4). There are other examples floating around out there, but I can't remember where to find them. The AmigaScrapBook was done with Hollywood 2.0. Maybe Andreas Falkenhahn should compile some of the demos he includes and upload them to his website.

Hans

EDIT: There's also Badger badger badger done with Hollywood v1.9x.

I have just asked Andreas about releasing the included examples as executable.
If he doesn't mind then I will be happy to upload the best ones to OS4depot.
Just waiting for his reply....

p.s.
I have ordered the upgrade 4 hours before, and I am sitting in needles and check my mailbox in every minutes...
