It's now official; AMD anounced this morning that it is buying up ATI. It'll be fun to watch what kind of products come out if this in the future.

Looking at it from an Amiga perspective I think this is yet another nail in the coffin of PPC and non-x86 architectures in general.

@DrBombcrater

Yep, this sounds bad for PPC for sure. /me wonders how long the Radeon documentation will be reachable to 3rd party developers...

Hmm...so it's true then. I wonder how this will affect the PPC Amiga-platform then. Would this mean that Amiga would have to look for another graphic solution, or simply go for AMD CPUs instead? Man, so many changes in the computer industry nowadays...

@Rachy

Why would they limit the market for graphics chips to no higher than their market share for CPUs?

Why?

AMD have a history of cooperation and disclosure of chip and chipset specifications and development material.

ATI, on the other hand, do not.

I welcome the purchase, personally.

What documentation? Next to none is available anyway.

Obviously you don't visit slashdot, nor do you watch enough Simpsons. You're supposed to say:

I for one, welcome our new graphics chip overlords.

Genesi was wise enough to look for another graphic solution for the ODW and OSW. Now they are promoting XGI cards, and got linux 2D/3D drivers already for this range of cards.
I guess Genesi was tired to ask ATI for years about some decent drivers for the PPC platform.

@DrBombcrater

AMD sold it's MIPS biz group and then gain another MIPS biz group from ATI.

This should make no change... the ATI GPUs in the AmigaOnes have nothing to do with the CPU.
The new AMD/ATI will/should still sell GPUs... it would be very crazy if they would not want to make the profit

@hnl_dk

but maybe this will result in AMD Macs instead of Intel Macs... as the Intel Macs are using ATI

@SoundSquare: BBRV said on some forum that he had received the documentation he asked for...

Anyway, I don't see what impact it will have for the Amiga users... Boards used in the NG Amigas are no longer being built since years...

Leo.

There won't be any immediate impact. But the chance of getting any help with future GPUs will be much reduced, and anyway AMD is bound to push synergy between its GPU and CPU designs as much as possible so there may not even be a practical way of using future GPUs on non-x86 platforms.

I do try to avoid Slashdot if I possibly can!

I think the reference was from Red Dwarf originally, not the Simpsons ;)

@hnl_dk

So all in all, this is just a new and closer market strategy of AMD and ATI, and this has nothing to do what CPU Amiga should use? Great

@Hammer

Thanks for the link So to understand, AMD might have some excellent southbridges, and having this AMD/ATI-colloboration would simply allow for new excellent southbridges for the future
