Official OctaMED Sound Studio website: http://www.octamedsoundstudio.com

In 2024, OctaMED 8 was released with AHI support and MIDI hardware enhancements.

This week we have continued development by adding two new features, requested by a user:

* The Open Recent Projects window stores and displays a list of the last 10 projects opened in OctaMED. The user can then load a recent project with a few convenient clicks.

* Add ED_NOTEOFF Arexx command to insert a "NoteOff" command at the current track with a key combination

It's nice to see this awesome tool still in active development. Keep it up.

@amigakit

Is this currently available to purchase at all?

The octamed link redirects to the amiga.org wiki page for Octamed, but it alludes to it being available on the amigakit store, however doing a search there gives nothing found for "Octamed".

@_Steve_

You need to buy the dongle (A600GS) to get OctaMED 8.

So we are still waiting on an Amiga release, as so far we only have an AROS release... Why is this news on AmigaWorld Should this not be on arosworld instead?

Lets hope we see an AmigaOS or OS4 release sometime soon.

@Dwyloc

AmigaOS software already runs on AROS, how hard would it be to be the other way around...

You're new around here? Why on earth wouldn't this be on the forum? You don't think a open source reimplementation of AmigaOS is related enough?

There is no AROS release. The version we released on the A600GS and A1200NG is a Classic Amiga binary. AmiBench on the A600GS runs Classic Amiga (OS3 compatible) programs. Consequently OctaMED runs fine on it.

There is a lot of assembly code in the original OctaMED source which makes it a challenge to port to PPC but we have some ideas on that.

@pixie

There are system patches that decompress, packed executables. Running AROS exe files should just another patch, to enable loading elf files, as if they were amiga executables. Is not loadseg or something they normally patch… there was few viruses that also did that back in the day, to add malicious code. I wonder, if that code, can’t be just copied from AROS itself. And converted into a patch.

there was something called afaos, did it do this?

@NutsAboutAmiga

Well, in this case it seems one can just build an amigaOS file and have it working in both systems, so not all is lost.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Read https://aminet.net/package/misc/os/AfAOS4.8

AROS Final Writer 7.1/7.2 68K ELF wouldn't run on AmigaOS 3.x 68K.

@NutsAboutAmiga

afaos was not about support of aros binaries but backporting some aros features like themeing to amigaos

@Dwyloc

with your logic why are new versions of PPC based software announced here?

Is it running on a A1200 or A500?

On Aros 68k software designed and compiled for 3.1 running too because it is basically implementing 3.1 API. The software so to say thinks it runs on 3.1

@amigakit

I'm interested in a 3.x release as well. Appreciate there may be some logistics with distribution (either through the web or physical) you have to get sorted but I'm eagerly anticipating any news on this.

In 2025 it is due to be released as a separate digital download and boxed software for Commodore-Amiga and Amiga compatible systems.

Yeh… it probably wont load, because of nontechnical reasons beyond its not allowed.

True, but I assume AROS has some new features added to end of JMP table, so LVO’s beyond X, might be incompatible. With for example AmigaOS3.2, as they might extend the libraries with different functions at the same LVO’s.

I’m pretty sure OS3.1 apps are compatible with AROS, but AROS apps might not be so compatible with OS3.1 or OS3.2.

Unless special care was made, to make sure they got extended with the same functions and with same number arguments, with correct order. Using wrong version numbers can also mess things up.

Even if AmigaOS3.2 and AROS has the same new functions, there might be difference in the implementation, of a functions. When an error is returned, how the input values are handled, and so on.
