@Signman

Awesome, always great to hear more people playing around with the software. Love to see what you come up with and to me it doesn't really matter if your a complete beginner or otherwise.

(It was better result than via some 24bit gfx cards for Amiga.)

That’s really strange, HAM8 is not a lossless compression, should be a clear difference between a HAM8 and a PNG 24bit image. Maybe something is wrong with old 24-bit graphic card, maybe try recapping it, and reflow it, if you getting artifacts, it can be because it picks up signal noice, or are not able filter out signal noice. Of couse with digital DVI/HDMI outputs, we never have that problem. (Old OCS monitors allways create blury images.), (note that some modern montors do upscaling as well, if the mode is not supported, this can caouse artifacts as well.)

8bit = 2 mode bits, 6 data bits = [m m] [ d d d d d d]

Two bits are reserved for mode, 6 bits are static colors (64 colors), 6 bit for change on red, 6 bit for change on green, 6 bit for change on blue. (This are 6 upper bits, the 2 lower bits are discarded. (so you will get rounding error here.)

In addition, because only one channel can be changed at the time, there it can take up to 3 pixels to get the correct colors, this can cause a smearing effect. But I have been playing with the idea, that if you double resolution in x axes the distortion will less noticeable. (For example if the original image is a lowres image upscale it to hires image, and then do the conversion to HAM8.)

I guess this what your talking about when going from Hires to Super Hires, however it does not solve the rounding error, and you need like 1.5 pixels to display the correct color. if resolution is doubled.

And you now you have 3:2 compression compared to the 3:1 compression per pixel

Thanks @OldAmigan. Good question, It would be wonderful if people could buy it, even digitally. After selling mine years ago, I picked it up about 6 months ago at a local Amiga gathering.

I can say that we are narrowing down who owns the IP of the software and hope to bring some news soon. Just don't want it to get stuck like Dpaint (EA).

@number6 I have not tried it but know it also supports a few other formats. I'd love to have png as a save option or animated gif. (was just looking back at our conversation in forums about pegger)

@DrProcton as mentioned we have two people who are on the Digital Creations team, awaiting some feedback from them both, will share it if we find out more info.

I did start a facebook group for Brilliance sometime ago (not a big fan of the social media site) but many Amigans hand around there. https://www.facebook.com/groups/AmigaBrillianceSoftware/

I own at least one legal copy of True Brilliance 2.0, but never spent any time using it, as I usually preferred D-Paint IV. Does True Brilliance 2.0 have all the same animation features that D-Paint IV has?

I was blown away by the box art that Jim Sachs did for the Brilliance packaging and promotions, which reminds me, I need to call and stop by Jim Sachs house that he is building in Southern Oregon, to see if he has finished it yet. It is an amazing place, and you can check out his blog about building it by Googling "Castle on the cheap", or something close to that. Jim Sachs pixel art was second to none when the Amiga was young. I wonder if he still does any pixel art these days?

@amigadave

Most animation functions seem to work the same if not more intuitively and definitely faster than DPaint (I am stubbornly still preferring DPV but that's just due to years of muscle memory)! Not sure about the Lightboard function. Fantastically, Ham8 animation looks possible on a Vampire!

Sachs is a remarkable man, one might say a Renaissance man. Pilot, architect, artist, game designer and programmer. Impressive.

It was in Amiga4000 presentation. First A4k machines delivered to Finland vs new Impact Vision 24 gfx cards.
AGA delivered ~262k/24b colors in higher resolution than IV24's 24bit output.

Hi Everyone,

Want to see "Fred the Flour Man" create some magic on the Amiga :)

Animation created in Brilliance II using colour Cycling.
The IFF Animation file is free of course here to try out on your Amigas (Created on A1200 with Extra Ram)

@DrProcton

Good question, I did get a nice reply from Dennis Hayes via Facebook on the Brilliance group https://www.facebook.com/groups/AmigaBrillianceSoftware/

Thanks for the reminder I’ll send a message and try to find out more.

Well, your video might be a bit late.

Most formats generated by Amiga software are not suitable to be directly presented on Youtube.

The videos shown there are usually more than 3 minutes long, have full color, stereo audio and they are often made in HD-Format.

@invent

I remember seeing this being shown at a London Amiga show way back when (I would love to believe it was Jim Sachs himself doing the demo, but the fog of time, etc).
I bought both version 1 and 2. I cannot recall any great software improvements (other than the removal of the dongle requirement). V2 was a necessity for me as I had both Scala MM400 (dongle required) and a GVP G-Lock installed (port needed as well).

I loved this software! I will follow this series of articles closely and would also be interested in the book too.

Again, this may be my tired old brain playing tricks, but ISTR Brilliance working through emulation, but TruBrilliance not playing nicely (crashing and screen artifacts??). Anyone confirm this? And do both work on OS4 with modern hardware?

Regards

John

@invent

just a curiosity that might interest you

Oddly in all my years here, no one ever asked how I did this. heh.

If nothing else, it was interesting to see all the Brilliance screens plus the Sachs' image on NG h/w.

Wishing you continued success in all of this and your other work,

@jd997uk

In regard to your post and others prior about 3.1 vs 2.1 and Brilliance, I can't say because the posters don't seem to have exact cases to test.

The Brilliance2 package worked flawlessly for me under 3.0 (ROM and WB) and under the 3.9 OS using 3.1 ROM with ROM update. all of this on A4000D.

maybe this sounds familiar?

I get the feeling it might be made in AMOS… the menu system looks, a lot like it is.
if so it might possible to make run on Amos Kittens, if someone can find a none encryped / compiled source code

I remember having read that it is 68k assembly not Amos, can’t be Amos.

Is it a book about how to draw in pixel art using Brilliance or a book about how to use Brilliance?

@kamelito

You can mix 68K assembly with AMOS, load hunk file with "pload" load command, into the AMOS bank, the 68K assembly has to relocatable code.

You can also stuff your 68K assembly into your own custom extension.

@jd997uk

Might have to contact Jim himself to confirm that one, very lucky if you did see Jim Sachs demoing the software. I haven't run Brilliance II via OS4 (X5000) as yet, to confirm any issues. Generally using A1200+memory or mac emulation, using screen modes anything different from our standard Amiga resolutions is problematic as Toni Wilen mentions (thanks @number6 / EAB thread)

Not sure on differences between version I and II. The Addendum User Guide for Version 2.0 says:

What Digital Creations did in Brilliance 2.0:
- We increased the features
- We removed the security key
- And we drastically reduced the price

If I find info about the differences will mention it.

@number6 thanks for the info/link and kind words, interesting test you did, did you do any further tests, more curious about it now ;)

@kamelito "Is it a book about how to draw in pixel art using Brilliance or a book about how to use Brilliance?"

It's probably a mixed bag of things, yes drawing pixel art but also how to use some of the tools, I'll even point out some of it's limitations and work arounds. For example you can't use the Antialiasing tool for 1 pixel brushes but 2+ brushes do work (It's a recommended version 3 enhancement)

The book will also cover current game development using Brilliance for games like "Reshoot Proxima III" and "Boss Machine". An example of this is the player ship in RPIII will have a glow state for shooting, while I have so far used Photoshop, I'll be using Brilliance to test the animation frames.

@DrProcton I do have an update for you, have a few other contacts that might point me closer to who owns Brilliance II, one of the great contributors "Dennis Hayes" kindly gave me a few pointers :)
