This one has already been cracked, but for confirmation, find out what "river" is in Celtic (Welsh will do great, do need to dig up your Brythonic-English dictionaries).
|
Well, in Irish (Gaeilge), river is "abhainn" (pronounced "ow-win"), or "abha" (pronounced "ow-ah")... Though I don't know if that fits or is even in the right direction. It's Celtic at least
Incidentally, anywhere you see the name "Avonmore" (it's a town in Ireland, and at least a few place names in London), it comes from "Abhainn Mór" meaning "Big river" Last edited by Daedalus on 05-Jan-2010 at 12:28 AM.

| @Daedalus I don't have any doubt about it being XMOS, particularly the references to TrevorD on the XCORE forums and the vague confirmation we have received about the river. Also hidden.png was supposed to be related to todays clues, so is more in reference to the 'custom chip' than the main PPC CPU (IMO).
I think that CPU will be faster than what we have seen before but perhaps not as good as some hoping it to be. I think cost would be a big factor in this area.
Was also just over on a.org and someone pointed out the PCI slots and wot not are way further into the mobo than normal, I guess this will make the A-EON case a must.
Sorry about edits

River = Afon (welsh) = Avon = Bristol!! (i base this on a 2 second google search which turned up the River Dee in Wales as 'Afon Dyfrdwy' in Welsh: Wikipedia Link, apologies if incorrect)
Ding Ding Ding, I think we're onto something!
Maybe X really is XMOS related!

Just for the sake of putting this one to bed (and with links in one place):
Quote:
My whole was born in a place where a Celtic river was by Saxons, crossed
|
Bristol upon Avon
Bristol Quote:
Bristol's Saxon name speaks for itself. Brycg stowe means the place by the bridge. |
Avon Quote:
The name Avon is a cognate of the Welsh word afon meaning "river" |
...where crossed = bridged.
and here is a link to the riddles in full.Last edited by Boot_WB on 05-Jan-2010 at 12:55 AM.

Ok, based on this it looks like Chris is right. I'll change my guess to dual core for the CPU. It's X he refered to as different.
This is the quote that had me thinking it wasn't dual core. Now I'm back to a possible choice of processors, single or dual. Quote:
Not from Rogue: No, it doesn't have the number of cores you are thinking of. Whatever number you are thinking of. At least, not necessarily. |
I'm done playing now. Time to wait for the answer and buy one if it's good. How could it not be after all this. Last edited by ktadd on 05-Jan-2010 at 01:35 AM. Last edited by ktadd on 05-Jan-2010 at 12:58 AM.

and add what i've wrote above :
the first letter is X ("To start, just look at the very first page") the next two letters are O & M ("Nemo entered into a rage", after click) the last letter of the word we search is 'S' (fricative + first tree)
i don't know what phoenicians are doing here but add X, M, O, S to Bristol and we have an answer Last edited by nimrod7 on 05-Jan-2010 at 01:00 AM.

You need to check your Celtic consonant shifts. From proto-Celtic 'abon', the 'b' becomes a w sound in Q-Celtic languages, as modern Irish 'bh', or a v sound in P-Celtic ones, as modern Welsh 'f'.

| I can't belive I wasted an hour of my life doing this but...
To start, just look at the very first page, X
To follow, begin where Nemo entered into a rage (M)editerranean Sea (maybe?) Nemo: "I wished to give you a sight of the curious spectacle of a submarine eruption."
Then add to that what the Phoenicians used to see (O) Latin symbol for Phoenician letter 'eye'
The end was found, fricatively wound, in the branches of the very first tree (S)erpant
XMOS!
Ooops looks like I'm late for the party.

| @Dafs
Thanks, I find this to be a more satisfactory way of getting at the letters X M O S.
I'm still not entirely convinced though, because "(O) Latin symbol for Phoenician letter 'eye'" seems a bit too convoluted, "i" I'd understand but what would lead us to resort to Latin alphabet?
Of course XMOS being in Bristol seems to confirm the "whole", and also Andrew's comment about Transputers. Another 6:30 before the next clue or final announcement... though I don't recall seeing a set day for the end of the puzzle...
