So debug does show that the retail R7 250 I thought might work is a rebadged 7700. I remember reading this in another post somewhere, and that's how I ended up with the card.

Quote:
RadeonHD (2): Graphics card name is: Radeon HD 7700 Series
RadeonHD (2): Identified the chipset as: VERDE

The OEM card is indeed an Oland chipset.

@Bradsco

Had an R7-250 that would not work with the Sam460ex.
That card had a variant of the Verde Chipset for laptops called Venus LE( HD 8830M).

@Spectre660

So far no luck in getting anything to work on the Sam. I'm organizing all the debug logs, but just tonight I tested each card in the X5000 and every one of them worked, Warp 3D Nova included.

Asus HD7770 DC-1GD5-V2
Club3D R7 250 CGAX-R7252L
Dell R7 250 7121A00400G
XFX R7 250X ZNJ VB.1
PowerColor RX 550 4GBD5-DH
PowerColor RX 570 4GBD5-3DH/OC

Disappointing.
Do you get the Workbench startup jingle with any of them ?
Assuming you have audio working and connected .

Yep, both systems are completely configured and everything connected while testing. I know that even if there's an issue with the video card, it's still possible to hear the startup chime once Workbench is loaded. I've got the debug kernel set in kicklayout so there should be serial output after the Radeon drivers but consistently the debug logs stop while the Radeon driver is starting up. The output consistently begins with some version of:

Quote:
RadeonHD (0): ERROR: AtomBIOS is stuck in a loop for more than 5 seconds. Aborting
RadeonHD (0): ERROR: AtomBIOS stuck executing C448 (len 321, WS 0, PS 4) @ 0x0072. Aborting.
RadeonHD.chip (0): ParseTable said: CD_INFINITE_LOOP_ENCOUNTERED

The two RX cards never get past the Sam's initial output, because it never sees the card.

Again, no serial output after that, so not much to go on. Even if the video cards weren't producing output until the Workbench came up, perhaps the board itself is preventing further progress because it can't find VGA.

I'm also fairly sure that this RX 550 card won't work anyway. The PCI bus only delivers 25 watts max, while the top end for PCIe is 75 watts. The RX 550 has no external power connector, so I doubt it would ever get enough juice to run.

@Bradsco

Did your remember to set the Radeon RX module in Kicklayout ?

MODULE Kickstart/RadeonRX.chip

I used to use a Radeon HD5670 (Maximum power draw 64 W) with my Sam440ep-Flex.
Radeon RX 550 is 50W.

@Bradsco

NO VGA would indicate that somethig may not be seated properly or a sharp bend in an riser cable .

Yes the modules are enabled in kicklayout. I've tried both versions of the chip files (production and debug) but my thought is that it's not even getting to load them. The Sam produces no serial output beyond the initial UBoot debug info.

One method I used was to install the Radeon 9250 in the last slot and verify the system booted completely, which it did. Installing the RX 550 in the first slot (with or without the 9250 installed) the serial output simply stops at VGA:

Did your HD5670 have an external power connector?

@Bradsco

No the HD5670 did not have an external power connector.
I used a 550w power supply with the Sam440ep-Flex .
I did use a few cards that did have an external power supply at various points .
A HD4850 for instance .

Interesting...If I install both cards (no matter which slot, which combination) my SAM does not boot (no UBoot, black screen).
I tried to boot with R9250 and see what Ranger would say about second slot with the adapter and VTX HD7750.

Hopefully that's not too confusing. It didn't successfully boot with more than one card installed. That was just me checking first to make sure the OS would boot successfully with the 9250 installed in a slot other than the first one.

At this point I'm really only ruling things out.

Sam440-flex is known good.
Amiga OS 4.1 install (and drivers) are known good.
All video cards are known good.
PCI to PCIe adapter and cable are known good as they work properly with the HD 6850. Of note here is that this adapter (as it seems everything sold now) is marketed as PEX8112 but actually uses the PEX8111 chip.

I would still like to find a combination of things that work properly together.

@Bradsco

If the Polaris card is not detected and everything is plugged in and no cable kinks then it could indeed point to the PEX8111 being a problem .

Anything is possible with the adapter, but I see mr2 is having the same experiences as myself with the PEX8111 in that it works.

I'm not really inclined to buy another one without knowing exactly what I'd get. Every instance of a PCI to PCIe adapter online (including the one I bought) is listed as PEX8112, so I'm not confident enough to spend another $20 for something that won't get here for a month.

@Bradsco

The Radeon HD's are recognized by U-Boot as VGA options for both of you.
The Radeon RX cards seem to not be for you . mr2 has not yet tested a Radeon RX card.
As he does not currently have the drivers for either no additional feedback on the Radeon HD Southern Island cards.

It is still available on Amazon, too.

https://www.amazon.com/Bewinner-Conversion-Adapter-PXE8112-Chipset/dp/B07ZX9B36Y/ref=psdc_13983711_t3_B0037ECAM2

Maybe, for you it is faster to get one and probably easier to return if the adapter is not as described?
But costs twice as much, though...and looks exactly the same.

@Bradsco, Spectre660

From Hans website:

if you use a PCI-to-PCIe bridge card, get one with a PEX8112. The Radeon HD driver has code to optimise the settings of the PEX 8111 and 8112, but not other PCI-to-PCIe bridges. Plus, it supports blind-prefetching, which increases VRAM read access speed.

@mr2

We can currently only speculate as the Radeon RX cards are not being recognized by U-Boot with Bradsco's current connfiguration.

In my testing I had the cards directly connected to the adapter. no cable. had cut down the adapter bracket to the video card could fit .
