| folks,
one of the ideas from amiwest 2012 was that intuitionbase.com should run a contest to see what are the favorite applications of next-generation amiga users. so we thought we'd start off this week with a few categories: the best paint programs and the best image editors.
we've selected a few nominees from the OS3 and OS4 software lists we have over on the site and are looking for what you think is the best paint program to use on a next-generation amiga in this thread. positive discussion is encouraged! we'll be looking at other categories in the coming weeks and will post the list of everyone's favorites as well as the favorites of the editors at intuitionbase.com. have fun!
and the nominees are:
* deluxe paint V v5.2 * lodepaint rev116 * personal paint v7.1 * perfect paint v2.93 * TVpaint * sketchblock v1.7

SketchBlock and TVPaint.
SketchBlock only lacks some the paint modes from TVPaint (shades, light, colorize & tint) and maybe another magnify tool (to get two views).
IMHO deluxe paint, personal paint are nice to do pixel art. (BTW why grafx 2 is not in the list?) _________________ A1200PPC / Sam440ep / Sam460ex / X1000 / X5000 OS4.1 |

good point. i use it myself and i just forgot to add it to the poll.
@thread
i hope everyone enjoys these threads. some of us at amiwest were just tired of all the fighting and thought it would be nice to have something fun to argue over for a change. that and folks wanted a nice place to find the best software out there. so these threads are part of our 'best of amiga' competition this week. more on this should be in the news article once it's approved.
does no one else use perfectpaint around here? i love it!

Me! Great application.
However, I´m not NG user (or maybe WinUAE can be considered as NG? ). |

| For my purposes, Lodepaint seems somewhat better than PerfectPaint. _________________ : AmigaOneXE (unmod.) 750FX/512 MB +stuff & AmigaOS 4.(0|1) : A1200/68060&96MB/SCSI/EM1200-Voodoo3 & OS 3.5 : A500/1MB : Pegasos (ff) 512 MB & MorphOS Praise seitan. |

SketchBlock v1.7 because it's fast and native. Feature set may not be as complete as the others, but the rate of development is impressive.
Some of the others are no longer under development, so might be good already but no potential to get any better.

both fxpaint and GIMP were nominated, but in our image editor category. make certain to head over to that thread, too, and cast your vote!

Personal Paint. With a caveat that I've not tried out the latest SketchBlockyet.

I haven't used lodepaint or sketchblock, and TVpaint just has foreign menuing system... kind of weird to get used to. When it comes down to it, for simple drawing DeluxePaint is still my favorite. I guess I just got used to the way it works. I'd love to get the animation part working!

| Brilliance stands head an shoulders above DPaintV in my opinion. Any reason it wasnt listed? Is the poll supposed to be NG centric?
Of those listed I'd probably have to choose PPaint.
This thread highlights just how superior (and in general how good they were/are) old amiga paint packages are still to this day vs. any open source options though. Gfx2, lodepaint, etc. dont hold a candle to the better 68k programs.
Just as well they can be used in one way or another on the NG systems. :)

good point on brilliance -- the reason it wasn't included is because we haven't tested it under AmigaOS 4.x yet. these polls are part of our 'best of the amiga' competition on intuitionbase.com, so we're looking for applications that run on next-generation amiga systems. classic apps are fine, but they need to work well without UAE for our purposes.
@thread
has anyone tested brilliance on their PPC-based amiga yet? any issues with it running under petunia?

Id be very surprised if it worked very well. Typically Amithlon mirrors OS4x/MOS in regards to what 68k software works without the use of UAE (only amithlon is much faster obviously), and its a piece of software Ive had to set up to use euae when I double click its icon.
Seems to hit hardware a bit more than Dpaint.
As for the poll itself, I wouldnt be expecting the results to be truly representative of what's good/bad/other as system loyalty/native apps/etc. clearly influence the results.
Doesnt stop it being a bit of fun, but results need to be taken with a grain (spoonfull?) of salt :) Last edited by fishy_fis on 28-Oct-2012 at 05:53 PM. Last edited by fishy_fis on 28-Oct-2012 at 05:31 PM.

| I voted for SketchBock because it's native and under very rapid active development. It's going to get better and better, though still not as mature in some areas as other choices. The support for layers and especially for drawing tablets is quite nice.
TVPaint is wicked cool and fast on all platforms including classics with RTG, and Personal Paint is nice for bitmap animation still. Wish I could get some use out of any version of DPaint on my X1000 for 2D animation, but too many things don't work right for me to get any real work done with it.
