   posted by elwood on 21-Oct-2012 12:21:17 (10696 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, 20 october 2012

On our never ending effort to always offer the best support to our customers, we are delighted to announce the availability of another operating system for our Sam460ex/AmigaOne 500 products.

Thanks to our agreement with Jason McMullan and before that with Michal Schulz, a native version of AROS has been presented at Amiwest and will be shown at the upcoming Pianeta Amiga in Italy (30 nov. 1-2 dec, 2012). AROS will be soon available for all our boards.

Many thanks to Jason McMullan, Michal Schulz and all AROS developers and community for their work and contribution.

However, default icon and window theme are horrible.

good move, acube. even though im not interested in ppc hardware (even contrary as it steals man power from 68k port ;)) i think it was a worthy initiative.

He had to comment that otherwise this could have been a little too positive news item for AROS, now it's back to normal negativity against AROS .... - check -

@pavlor

AROS is theme-able. If you don't like the way it looks, just change it instead of whining about it.

I don't understand the point of emulating OS4.1 on the SAM460. Wouldn't this just cut into Hyperions profits? Or, is the point just to get an OS4.1 like OS for free? Sorry if I'm missing the point and my bluntness.

Well, I hope that the AROS sound drivers works better than AmigaOS4.

Other thing, is good that Sam now has three OS, AmigaOS 4.1, Linux Ubuntu and AROS (only missing MorphOS) but also we need software besides of OS and drivers for cards, printers, etc.

Emulating OS4.1 ?!
AROS is not binary compatible to OS4.1
It is not even API compatible. It aims to be API compatible to Amiga OS 3.1. (And binary compatible on original Amiga Hardware)

How ? Is the SAM even sold without OS4.1 ?

The point is, that acube wants to offer different Operating systems for their Hardware. They offer more Choices to their customers.
It also makes sense to have another amiga like OS on their Hardware. It can be used to prove that their Hardware works fine. Lets say a USB or PCI Device xyz crashes the whole system on OS4.1, but runs well on AROS, then no one can say its a Hardware error.

But I think the real point about this is, that the acube guys are nice people and want to support anything amiga related. I am quite sure, they would also support the MorphOS Team if they were interested in porting MorphOS to acubes Hardware (unlikely).

the initiative was as i see from the acube side. i always wondered if it was them, that donated a sam for jason, it turns out it was. the apparent reason might be acube doesnt trust hyperions support anymore and, genuinely interested in amiga in general, wants to secure its hardware compatibility with actively developed and available open source amiga alternative next on the list. completely understandable. just like hyperion has shown no solidarity with acube when it comes to platform support since 460 has been in release preparation, acube has no duty towards hyperion. simple as that.

@Heinz

Thanks for the direct & excellent answers. I forgot that AROS is more Amiga 3.X like and that OS4.1 is compulsary when purchasing a SAM board from ACUBE. Will ACUBE start selling boards without OS4.X? Intersting....

A couple of questions if I may....

Since the OS is coming from ACUBE and aimed at the SAM460 board, what drivers does it include - just drivers for the boards base hardware? In other words, would I have to disconnect the SATA board and graphics board on the bus connectors to boot correctly?

Is it the same as above for the LINUX OS they announced last week?

Are these "LIVE" CDs only? If they are LIVE CDs only I guess that using Amiga OS Apps is not possible? What software do the LINUX and AROS distros come with - a browser, IP stack, file manager, etc...?

Looking at ACUBE's site, it would appear that AROS is installable... VERY INTERSTING! So, a person could install classic Amiga software on their SAM460 using AROS? Dual Boot capabilities? Seriously, at first I had buyer's remorse when I got my SAM460EX system and it sat doing nothing for 9 months! But I have been using everyday for a few months and the machine just gets more and more fun to use! (@anyone - PLZ - We need a fast browser!) BTW, (sidetrack) what's the status of Timberwolf? It's unusable!

Thanks..... & Thanks ACUBE & AROS

BTW, I use Ubuntu LIVE CDs all the time to check PC hardware before reinstalling Windows for customers too.

@Amiga4000
i think its best you head to aros-exec to answer your question. i dont think the sam version is public by now, but i guess it should hit nightly releases soon, then it will be likely available in experimental v1 section just as 68k is.

its hard to understand, what do you mean? fork? branch? aros has obviously separate version for every platform it supports based on common platform independent code. but you arent supposed to be ble to run arosx86 on ppc or ppc on 68k of course.

and what concerns the news im sorry. you obviously wouldnt complain if it was news for os4, right? im sorry the development in aros sector is more dynamic.

dynamic in writing news items ?

i have no idea whats wrong with you but i won't look into that now.

so what is Nikosidis working on? AspireOS?
so what is IcarOS?
so what is ...

the list is longer

anyway, aros never interested me and when i want to look into it i meet creatures like you and arko and just turn away and wait for it to go away.

see my point?

as for OS4 , might be news to me but i made a big fuss about the SAM series for their names and confusing setups etc, and you know what?,i am not the only one and its still unclear to other people not going to forums everyday or even every now and then.

I doubt that anyone would buy a SAM just for running AROS or Linux on it (except industrial users).

The OS come from the AROS Team (mainly Dr. Schulz and Jason Mc Mullan). Acube just sponsors the porting effort.
I dont know which Hardware Components on the SAM AROS actually supports, but the x86 SATA Driver supports quite a lot different controllers, so there is no reason why your Card couldnt be supported. If you have a SAM you can simply download AROS for your SAM and try it out. It is free.

AFAIK any AROS CD is a Live CD than you can install on HD.
I havent seen anything else yet.

I guess that the SAM port includes anything thats on the regular nightly builds for x86.
If someone wants to create a Distribution, like Icaros he would need to compile all Programs for ppc first.

When I would start to be sarcastic it seems that the OS4 world is preferred from you, one news every couple of years. Makes it easier to read...

When news from other camps are not interesting for you then simply not read them

thanks. im not going to refer to you as a "creature", not to insult anyone. just let me mention its not entirely your kind that made me walk away from os4, it was only a small part of the problem.
