Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : AROS One v2.4 x86 ABIv0 Released
posted by AMIGASYSTEM on 12-Feb-2024 11:45:19 (1152 reads)

AROS One 2.4 is now available for Download, in this release there have been a lot of changes mainly on the Core now compiled with the C library, this will not change anything for users but it is very important for developers because it facilitates and simplifies porting and compiling software.

AROS One 2.4 has to be installed from scratch because it is no longer compatible with the old Cores and the old software included in the large Contrib archive. Nothing is lost because the same software was included in the new Contrib compiled with the C Library, eventually for those who have their own configurations they could make a backup and manually insert them into the new system.

This is the most Stable version of AROS x86 ever released, so many fixes are related to Wanderer and Hardware compatibility, also the hardware compatibility catalog has been reformulated, HERE you can browse it.

Thanks to all the developers and all those who contribute financial support.

This is confusing me, is the old software I can find on http://archives.aros-exec.org/index.php still compatible?

I assume it's incompatible if it references a different library and the whole system was rebuilt with a new C library which changes everything. Developers will publish new releases or you will be able to build the apps from source.

All the old software found on AROS archives is still compatible with this release. The reference above was only meant to indicate, that software that is bundled with each AROS release (so called "Contrib") needs to be update. This however is a standard process for each new release, so from user standpoint nothing changes.

So it is more a feature than a problem.

Many thanks deadwood and keep the good work.

I think you should create an upgrade method for old installations... I have never re-installed an OS on any of my machines before, and it would be quite a step to start building a setup from a scratch if you have any kind of own tuning on the previous setup. Re-installing everything just for a minor update is quite repellent for users.

Thanks for the suggestions jPV , I can safely create installer updates, but in the latter cases it was not possible to do so, basically the whole Core and most of the contrib package software was replaced as mentioned above.

Also some software taken from Aminet and Aros archive "no longer supported by C libreia" was also fixed and replaced on AROS One.

On AROS integrating personal settings is super easy, just copy them from somewhere and then integrate them on the new release.

When AROS One no longer has these major changes then updated can be done.

If you use Windows or other OS, the same thing happens when a new OS version comes out, you cannot upgrade a WinXp with Win10, or Win7 with Win 11 although theoretically it is possible, but the best choice remains the new installation.

Well, if you have used the system at all, there can be all kinds of settings and changes anywhere. ENVARC and user-startup etc. are still pretty easy for more experienced users, but try to remember all your own configurations in programs everywhere.. like your own DOPus configurations, settings from programs that save them in their own directories and tooltypes, datafiles, game save files, etc. And all additional libraries, commands, dosdrivers, fonts, datatypes, etc. you might have installed.

These major versions come quite rarely anyway, and in most cases you're upgrading the whole computer at that point. And with Windows I did upgrade from Win7 to Win10 without re-installing with no issues. And my A1200 installation is based on the original installation from 1993 :) And I have never re-installed MorphOS since 2.0 (2008) either. Linux setups I also re-install only when moving to new computer.

Other than the replacement of the core and the various software, all the saves and my configurations remained the same and nothing was removed, only a few improvements were added.

All saves are still present in the program directories, same thing for saves in the ENVARC.

If users have changed or added anything, then they need to copy this data and transfer it to the new AROS One.

Quote:

Having said that technically nothing has changed, in the new AROS One 2.4, in addition to the old settings and old configurations, new configurations and new settings have been added.

Usually Windows has changed Operating System every 2/3 years, Win3.0/ 3.11, Win95/98, WinMillenim/Win2000 WinXp/WinVista Win10/Win11.

Installing Win7 on Win10 as said is not convenient, you risk having a huge Registry full of useless data, also in the system would remain many useless files, otre to get a heavy and slow Operating System, in some cases with some incompatibilities.

I say this because for many years I managed hundreds of PCs in the IT network of my company where I worked, which used particular software of some importance that had to work perfectly.

New features on Network Prefs, now there is a "Tethering" Tab that allows AROS One to connect to the Internet via your Mobile Phone.

"USB Tethering", is a ption available on all cell phones, connecting to the cell phone network is very easy, just connect a USB cable between PC (AROS) and Mobile Phone and enable USB Tethering.

No identification is required, no need to set the name of your Network, no user name or password is required.

AROS One by default is already preset for "USB Tethering" connection, if you have any questions please ask !

Irritating bug of the month - March 2024:

There is one day left for voting, I voted to enable the Workbench to delete files or folders simply by using the Delete key.

This feature would make work much faster, I have been using this very convenient feature on AfA One for years, even if I do it through third party software.

James Mattson has created new videos showing some of the many Applications installed on on AROS One 2.4.

note the similarity to Amiga OS, the structure is the same, same system folders, same libraries, same devices, virtually all the Core is similar to that of Amiga OS 3.1.

Is there a native AROS for Raspberry PI? Just curious...

Thank you, I will continue to give news even if less frequently.

There is a nice news coming: Prototype of AROS ABIv0 emulator for 64-bit AROS:

1) 32-bit test binary (of Tools/Calculator) is loaded and relocated under 64-bit AROS
2) 32-bit emulation mode is enabled in CPU and several lines of 32-bit code has been executed
3) Kernel of 64-bit Linux-hosted AROS has been modified to allow correctly task-switching between processes running 32-bit and 64-bit code
