Software News   Software News : DvPlayer DVD plugin
   posted by afxgroup on 12-Sep-2006 15:43:09 (10215 reads)
This is a DvPlayer DVD plugin based on libdvdcss present in MPlayer

Copy the file dvdvcd.plugin into your DvPlayer/dvplugins directory. This
replaces the original dvdvcd.plugin which comes with DvPlayer, so you might
want to make a backup of the original.

You should see the Crypted DVD with DVPlayer.

The plugin is available here

Enjoy

@afxgroup

Thanks. I'll try it out when I get home. Now I can finally play all my DVDs with DvPlayer.

Well I've just tried it and Im not sure if its the library or DVPlayer, but I have a problem with the DVD menu and playback. To start with it plays through the menus without pause (so for example on Babylon 5: In the beginning) it jumps through the english/french/german menus and then starts playing, minus the sound, it is nice and fast though..

Do you plan to support DVD menus?

That's normal for DVPlayer atm, it treats the menus as just another track to play. just press cursor down to skip to the next track

Unfotunately, it also means that no audio is played at all when the film is playing, presumably because I cant select which audio track to play.

Fantastic news, I'll try it out when I get home. This should be one less reason to turn on my Linux box.

@Mark

I have just tested it with the first LOTR dvd, and there was no Audio problem.

But my G4 800MHz was not powerfull enough to play without frame skips not many but they were there.

@Severin

With "support" i mean browsing menus, loading content from them by clicking.

Huh???? You can select the audio track you want via the Audio menu at any time. Maybe you don't have the required audio codecs installed, you can get them from OS4Depot here and here.

There is no DVD menu/IFO support in DvPlayer, so it just plays the streams as they are on the DVD. You can step between the streams by the up/down arrows or via menu. Most DVDs I've seen have the first stream as the DVD menu, the second stream as the movie itself and after that additional streams for extras footage, etc. But some DVDs have a strange structure and they embed trailers/etc. in the beginning of the same stream as the movie so you have to seek to the beginning of the movie manually. This will only be fixed if I add support for parsing the IFO files on the DVD and implement navigation/menu support, etc. which is a lot of work. Currently I'm working on wmv support but I'm considering releasing an intermediate version with some fixes/etc. before I finish wmv support.

That's very strange, on my 750FX/800 (G3) I get perfectly smooth playback on full screen with ~80% CPU usage with AC3 audio. I get a few frames skipped with DTS audio, which increases CPU usage to ~95-100% but on a G4 that should be no problem either thanks to AltiVec. I think you either have:

1. UDMA disabled for your DVD drive
2. 32bit screen depth set (check your tooltypes)

So enable UDMA for your DVD drive and make sure you use 16bit depth (it looks nearly as good as 32bit due to the on-the-fly dithering DvPlayer does).

@COBRA

I still use the VIA for dvd/hd's and my motherboard is not fixed.. so is itt vice to enable DMA on the dvd drive?

Edit: and yes I use a 16bit screen mode on my VooDoo3 (yep not the fastest gfx card around)

I have an unfixed uA1-mk2 (which has the same issue as XE) and I do have UDMA enabled for both my DVD drive and hard drive and I don't have any problems. I think you only start having problems if you have very high network traffic while doing heaving disk operations, whcih never happens for me with my 512/128kbps internet connection.

One thing is for sure, you will not get smooth DVD playback without UDMA.

Hmmm that could also be a bottleneck, especially if you run that in 33MHz PCI mode. The video bandwidth would be just too low for DVD.
