Software News   Software News : Nexuiz for AmigaOS4
   posted by afxgroup on 6-Dec-2010 14:34:45 (6717 reads)
Nexuiz is a fast paced 3d deathmatch game project created online by a team of developers called Alientrap. It is available for download for Windows, Mac, and Linux (all the same archive).
The first version was released May 31st 2005, released entirely GPL and free over the net, a first for a project of its kind. Since then it has been downloaded over 1.5 million times, and the game is still being updated and developed, currently at version 2.5 and new releases being developed.

Features

Nexuiz is a FPS with thirteen weapons, 24 official maps and over 240 community created maps, as well as 15 player models. The graphics in Nexuiz use coronas, the bloom shader effect, Realtime World and Dynamic Lighting and shadowing, shaders (with OpenGL 2.0), offset mapping, and High dynamic range rendering. All these effects can be turned off to make the game run on older hardware.
Nexuiz is primarily multiplayer (though it includes a full single-player campaign, which allows one to play through the various multiplayer game types and maps with bots), and allows for hosting and joining of games. It can also support new gametypes, or whole conversions quickly applied to it (much like Quake). Nexuiz supports most Quake modifications (although with varying functionality). Currently there are a few custom mods and maps used.

Installation

Download the game and unpack it wherever you want.

Since the game has been packed on MacOS X it is possible that you have to set the execute bit on Nexuiz exe file

I learned of this game a few days ago due to the thread about HalfLife porting (either here or on amigans.net) someone mentioned the DarkPlaces engine as a potential solution for that game. Does this game use the DDarkPlaces engine, or are they completely different projects that just happen to share some discussion time?

I guess no use in trying this on my Sam 533mhz judging by the screenshots..

But anyways.. still happy for those who can run this as it looks like a quality game. Thanks for this port.

Edit: Would be nice if you could state the download size as OWB wont show download size or progress bar.

I have tried running it, everything works until I try to start playing a single player game. Everything seems to be loading fine, I notice that the jpg and png .so are found and loaded, but the game just exits when the game is about to be started and the music has started. I'm now thinking that maybe I have old versions of the above mentioned .so libraries, I'll try updating them.

Same thing as Voodoo. Double-clic on the icon does nothing.

(I have a Pegasos II with 1 GB RAM)

@daff & voodoo
As afxgroup say there : very possible that you need to set executable bit for exe (because it was packed on macos => loose executable bit). Also you can try to run it from shell (to see output errors if they will be).

@kas1e

I have unpacked the archive with unarc, and I have been able to launch the game (the main screen actually) without having to set the executable bit.

I gave it a try for fun on my low end sam 533mhz even though i doubt it would work..
It loaded menu and such fine but locks up entire computer when it tries to load the game/map.. It loads for a while then suddenly all disk activity cease and no response even if you try soft reboot.

I also did not need to set the executable part.

On my AmigaOne XE 1GHz the game is unplayable, and I believe it's the same on afx' A1 too. By checking his video I have noticed that I get roughly the same speed as him, i.e. 15 fps in simple rooms, which goes down to 1-2fps when transparent walls are rendered. Seeing how Quake3 performs on the same hardware I'd try to check in the code what's causing the slowdowns and eventually release a bugfixed version.
