Software News   Software News : Release of fpga.resource AmigaOS 4.1 component for Sam460ex
   posted by elwood on 3-Jun-2011 21:19:40 (8083 reads)
ACube Systems announces the immediate release of the fpga.resource. This is an OS4 component that provides access to the I/O expansion bus found on the Sam460ex boards.

There are 80 I/O pins on the J22 connector, organized as 5 banks (each bank with 16 I/O pins) or as 80 single pins.

The archive contains both documentation and example source codes.

Check the documentation which comes with this executable for the pin-out layout.

Get the archive (soon on OS4depot): fpga_res-53.1.lha

For technical guys we would like to remember there is also an I2C resource on OS4depot. Check i2c.resource.lha

Neat! I love FPGAs. I don't have a Sam460, but I'm very interested in how this works.

@realize

* The easiest stuff to do is Amiga floppy disk support.
* Chipset support, of course it will be located at wrong addresses (it can be possible be used to speed up UAE), but don't think It will be easy to do that for AmigaOS4.
* Audio/Video encoding.

It will depend on number of gates that can be programed.

amiga floppy support? Now that is cool. But sounds like a lot of work for drivers, or is it some kind of virtualization or something? And who would be able to write a/v encoding drivers for os4??

Great news!

Any chance of an fpga.resource for the Sam440?

@robo-ant:

It's the same package for both 440s and 460s, if I understand the docs right.

What use of it when you can have all in adf?

@eXec
and just how are you supposed to create an ADF file without a floppy drive?

@itix

To J22 connector whit some kind of simple adapter in-between.

From reading the Example code it looks more like it’s used as buffered 3-sate IO access if so then access to the FPGA is limited; this will limit the FPGA to simple IO operation that does not require perfect timing.

Any complex use requires an extern card whit additional logic.

* Digital Joystick IO, is maybe the easiest to do,

* Floppy disk control is maybe doable, it has to be controlled by software on low level, timing is critical, because you will be reading none buffered MFM raw data.

If you are going to use it for Chipset emulation or Audio/Video decoding you need a chip on a circuitboard (PCB).

@NutsAboutAmiga

Indeed, it looks like the default embedded bitstream is a GPIO controller. Not sure what would be the use of this in a desktop application. I'm also curious about the latency you can expect on OS4 when controlling or reading pins. There's not so much overhead due to the OS anyway.

@tonyw

The docs only mention the 460ex, except tthe PDF with the pin layout which mentions both.

Would be nice to get some clarification on this.

Currently only the Sam460ex (full and lite) is supported.

The Sam440ep FPGA firmware doesn't have the GPIO controller implemented. We may release a FPGA update for the 440ep in the future, if there is demand for it.

Count me in! But i want the LatticeXP2 for the sam440ep, in the 40k version. 40k version is quite bigger than minimig. You could fit in a 68060 core too (assuming that a 2-3% of FPGA is already used to control some circuitry).

Joking or not, you seem to want to post on everything AOS related of late and have a dig or annoy. It isn't appreciated. Let this be a warning. Any more and you will be restricted for a week.
