software OS4   software OS4 : Call for Amiga Developers from A-EON Technology

Call for Amiga Developers
Kickstarting PowerPC and 68k software development

Sacramento 17th October 2015

As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver quality software content for both PowerPC and 68K Amiga systems A-EON Technology Ltd is pleased announce a new initiative for Amiga software developers.

In the past year we launched the AMIStore app store which has been enthusiastically supported by both Amiga developers and users.

AMIStore performance update:

44 software titles
Customer base ~700
Over 2200 paid transactions

……..and growing month on month

We have also purchased many Classic and Next-Generation AmigaOS titles as well as funding the development of several new applications and utilities. As part of this drive to improve the amount and quality of Amiga software we have created a dedicated SVN resource for all developers working on our applications. We have also implemented a Mantis bug tracker together with a developer mailing list and Wiki to aid software development. We now have 14 developers engaged in paid development work on 23 software projects. However, we are keen to expand and accelerate our software development effort to create new applications and utilities for the PowerPC and 68k platforms.

Call for Amiga Developers
We are looking for experienced Amiga developers to work on our existing applications and create new content for both the 68k and PowerPC platforms. If you are an existing or former Amiga developer and want to help create new software applications for the 68k or PowerPC platform please visit:

nice initiative!
However plz put OS essential apps(like MultiViewer) in AmigaOS itself(and pay the development with AmigaOS price) and let the non-OS specific software to be released as third party software...

This is good! especially the timing, a lot of us will have a fair bit of spare time in the next couple of months. A couple of things I'd recommend, from the point of view of a "lapsed developer":

1. Put links to up to date wikis etc, especially on how things have changed since the days of DICE and SAS/C.
2. Don't make it a requirement to sign up until you have something to upload. If I feel I'm committing to delivering something on a deadline, then it's not just a fun project anymore and I already have to deal with that in my day job.

Please consider the use of the Open Source L4 Microkernal associated Proofing solution to analyze each code block, and maybe even look at how it implements SMP and secure memory. Its 40k of C code, which must have at least some immesurably tiny part in common with Exec, merely due to message passing, registers, and size etc?

Concidering that AmiStore is made with Hollywood, I think it should be ported to all systems and unite the camps with software. I bet the revenue would improve too.

@Yasu

Only the frontend is made with Holywood, the secure network client part is written in C

That should be fairly simple to port as well.

@broadblues

well...dunno why to make frontend with one language and other things in another...
however C stands fro "portability" no?
And also I think that more customer more revenue

it would defeat the apparent purpose of amistore and this current initiative altogether. namely to force os4 development at the cost of other alternatives and document linkage to genuine amiga, including it as a target, even if only as alibi.

this is an os4 centric effort. not much amiga is going to be produced this way. certainly nothing morphos or aros related. it has been done end kept that way for long enough.

A buissniss trying to actually make a profit? Outragous!

While Amistore seems to be miles off getting to the userfriendliness of Steam for example, its a step in the right direction.
Espesially for the developers that want to get a few bucks for their efforts.

For those that doesnt subscribe to that notion, there is Aminet/OSdepot.

Why anything AeonKit/OS4 related has to have malicious intent to you is beyond me.

i dont say its malicious effort, or that they shouldnt make profit as much as they can. it though most obviously isnt an effort aimed at aros and morphos or cooperation with these platforms, as it seems to be doubts about it. it definitely looks that way.

it is their economic decision. They have bought some old software and now try make some money with it, including the OS4 shop. If they do not create something that is interesting for the other camps they will sell less and earn less money. If they make new software that is only targetting OS4 then they will only sell to OS4 users. The shop and the other activities are neither harming nor improving the situation.

I don't see the point of complaining that Amistore only runs on OS4 or XYZ app is only being ported to OS4 and OS3.

If you think Amistore would be an important addition to your platform of choice then contact A-EON and ask if you can port the back-end, or if you can't program then try to persuade someone who can that it is worth their time to do so.

Same goes for the various apps they acquired. Paying for up-front porting of the apps to OS3 and 4 is a big risk for A-EON but adding support for AROS and MorphOS makes the risk even bigger. Programmers for MorphOS and AROS could try negotiating a percentage of sales revenue instead of a flat fee, that would take the financial burden from them for those versions.

If the above are tried and fail because A-EON aren't receptive to the idea then you have every right to complain that they're being unreasonable but as the situation currently stands, those you are moaning are the ones being unreasonable.

Yeah, if MOS and AROS fans feel under-represented then there's not a lot stopping them from setting up their own alternative, an app store is not exactly quantum physics. The hard part is the e-commerce aspect, and there are a lot of hosting services that will do that for you.
