hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Miracles happen: A1 onboard audio works!
   posted by DaveAE on 25-Oct-2005 20:46:09 (30639 reads)
This might come as a shock, but I've uploaded a working via686b onboard audio driver for the AmigaOne! Only the first batch(es) of A1's actually have the AC'97 chip physically on the board.

Update: New VIA686B AHI driver on OS4depot

Unfortunately, it was taken off later on as Eyetech didn't think it was ever going to work. You could just try the driver to see if you have such a chip, but you can also have a look on the motherboard: left to the AGP-port, under the gfx card either is a small Sigmatel chip or an empty square. Most people won't have the chip though.

Some clever guy found out what was wrong. I'll mention him later on if he wants to be mentioned, I'm not sure at this moment if he does. Normally, the BIOS/firmware sets up some registers of the VIA that make it work (ACPI), unfortunately back then we thought it was a hardware issue.

This first version is very basic. It is playback only, has CD-in monitoring, but no volume controls etc. This will come soon in a later version.

If you're lucky to have the AC'97 chip, give it a try. If you'll use it, I would appreciate a small donation of 5 euro to paypal@audio-evolution.com.

Kind regards and thanks to the guy who found out about it in the first place!

I have the chip too but I wait until the new driver is uploaded to os4depot or a newer UBoot.
Thanks Steve and Davy.

About soldering this chip onto boards that don't have it!

C'mon people get serious. Would you solder a chip onto a pc board that doesn't have sound?

Don't tell me what to or not to do to my own board. :p

I did the DMA fix on my board even though I already had a SiI0680 card. I did the USB fix even though I don't use USB.

Why should I not add the Sigmatel chip even though I have an MAudio card that would blow it away? Considering how unusual it is to have speakers connected to my XE I wouldn't likely notice if I found a better use for the MAudio card...

Actually, speaking of the DMA fix... Any chance this ACPI thing would make DMA work on unfixed XE boards, or somehow interfere with boards that already have the DMA mod done? Just curious if Eyetech's comments that it's some unknown software thing causing the DMA problem amd not hardware flaw are close to being proven correct... Could other previously unused ACPI registers be responsible for the DMA situation?

@Thread

Thanks to the various photo's, I have identified that I also have the chip.

Not being electronically competant, or is that confidant, I'll wait for the updated driver, and some one to outline the required steps to get this working.
Both with the AHI prefs settings and connecting to the onboard sound chip with a CD drive.

It would be cool to get PlayCD working through this to test it.

(atleast they should have the same features; I didn't compare the pin I/O, but the package is the same)

Every one I looked at, even back to the 2.1 specs, had basically the same pinout (newer rev AC97 chips have some "reserved" pins in the older specs doing things now), and all the internal register layouts were the same.

Will have to see what the chips support based on DaveAE's response above.

Just did some digging in the AD1981B data sheet. It does support variable rate like he mentioned, so it should work. I'll have to double-check the pinouts later, but they should still match up and work.

@DaveAE

Great work!
My A1XE has the AC97 chip!

But no sound... will wait until new driver is uploaded.
Now I can get rid of my SB which I bought when I was told onboard sound wouldn't work!

@thread

now let's hope DMA problems can be solved also this way and we do have a perfect computer! (But we already know that!
Perhaps there are other hidden hardware fetures we don't know like a disguised G5

The Good news:
AC '97 Rev 2.1 Codec with Sample Rate Conversion
RS Stock no: 2508262565
National Semiconductor
Manufacturer's part number LM4549VH

£4.03 + VAT each.

The bad news:

RS only sell them in packs of 250 so that will be 1,007.67 + Vat

Don't think I'll bother

@MikeB

My sentiments exactly!

I did neglect to say that before, didn't I?

Say, how did you get that smiley with the thumbs up? It's not listed in the emoticons page.

So I'll just use this instead, for everyone involved in figuring this out:

Hey all,

Whooop.....there it is! I have the Sigmatell chip also. This is quite interesting news!

Wasn't there a batch of XE Eyetech never sold? Maybe time to rethink that( depending on the problem). Maybe also time to start thinking about a new production run.

Also, it look like Amiga Center in France may have some new business......... Soldering on AC97 codecs.

Things are looking up.

I was thinking the same thing.

Could the DMA problem be sorted now progress with the VIA has been made. what happens to the boards which have had the work around applied would the corrent initialisation cause problems on those boards.

To DAVEAE et al great work fellars. As soon as i get round to testing it. I'll paypal you the driver subs.

At Eyetech... You were right all along !!!!

Good Evening,

I've got the Sigmatel chip, even though I got an XE a year or so after they were first shipped. The Phantom is one happy Interrogative! (Perhaps I should have punctuated that sentence with an "?") This is very good news for those like me who have been considering what sound card to buy. We don't need to buy an extra gizmo! Yeah, verily, yeah! Huzzah! [Insert ecstatic phrase here]!

If the chip designator is U43, then I'm afraid I do not have one :((

This is great news!!
If I can offer a small suggestion:

It was not mentioned in the top article here, nor in the readme
at OS4Depot, that this affects certain versions of the XE Board only.

I'm sure there are many SE and Micro AmigaOne owners who are wondering
how this will affect them.

To be fair, I couldn't find the Sigmatel chip anywhere near my AGP slot
in my Micro board! (O.K., I'm joking here, I know full well that there is
no AGP Slot in my Micro!)

I think it's awesome good news! Way to go!!

Things just keep getting better and better.
