hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Miracles happen: A1 onboard audio works!
   posted by DaveAE on 25-Oct-2005 20:46:09 (30641 reads)
This might come as a shock, but I've uploaded a working via686b onboard audio driver for the AmigaOne! Only the first batch(es) of A1's actually have the AC'97 chip physically on the board.

Update: New VIA686B AHI driver on OS4depot

Unfortunately, it was taken off later on as Eyetech didn't think it was ever going to work. You could just try the driver to see if you have such a chip, but you can also have a look on the motherboard: left to the AGP-port, under the gfx card either is a small Sigmatel chip or an empty square. Most people won't have the chip though.

Some clever guy found out what was wrong. I'll mention him later on if he wants to be mentioned, I'm not sure at this moment if he does. Normally, the BIOS/firmware sets up some registers of the VIA that make it work (ACPI), unfortunately back then we thought it was a hardware issue.

This first version is very basic. It is playback only, has CD-in monitoring, but no volume controls etc. This will come soon in a later version.

If you're lucky to have the AC'97 chip, give it a try. If you'll use it, I would appreciate a small donation of 5 euro to paypal@audio-evolution.com.

Kind regards and thanks to the guy who found out about it in the first place!

Davy Wentzler

Hmm, more digging through datasheets. Not looking good. I no longer think any old AC97 rev 2.3 codec can be put on the board in place of this Sigmatel chip.

Managed to find an actual datasheet for the chip. Of all things not at the Sigmatel website.

The pinout of the chip is a problem. The GPIO0 and GPIO1 pins are described as "General Purpose I/O". Also all those other pins that don't match up are power and ground connections for various parts of the analog portions of the chip. And some of the other differences, while apparently minor, may cause another chip to really screw things up if it's put in place of the STAC9752T.

So, anyone know a source for the Sigmatel chip? Not much comes up from a Google search.

@Wegster

Does that mean it's time for @alx to update his post #5 in this thread:

BTW, I verified my board does not have the chip but it does appear to have all the other parts around it that are connected to it (capacitors, resistors, etc), with the exception of one or two resistors (maybe). I would be willing to give this a go if someone can post their Sigmatel chip part number in here. If I can get one, I'll solder it up and see if it works.

Strange that you do not have the chip. I order mine from Software Hut at the same time as you and my A1 has the chip. Different batches I guess.

Great work, Steve and Davy! I pre-ordered for one of the first XE's available in the States. But mine does not have the chip. So I'm still waiting on Eyetech to make good on their advertising that the XE was supposed to come with sound (will never happen). My guess is they couldn't get it to work so saved a few bucks by not installing the chip. Little to do with customers complaining about paying for something that didn't work (you paid full price for it not being there anyway).

Mine might have been part of one of the first batches to have the part left off.

@DWolfman

Did just get online (Have been offline since August)...

Just took a litle time to look through the different datasheets...

The only newer AC'97 that I could find, that is compatible with the Sigmatel stac9752T is the Sigmatel stac9766T (the same AC'97 chip as used in the Pegasos II)... It looks like it is 100% compatible (or at least as compatible as possible)

Hope You will be able to use the information

EDIT: there is one difference, that I am able to find... stac9752T does have a Signal-to-Noise ratio of 90db, where stac9766T does have a Signal-to-Noise ratio of 103db

@Geri

I have one board with an AK4544AVQ and one with an AD1881AJST. I have at least two more AD1881AJST chips (samples I got through Joanna Kurki) in a sealed bag here. I thought I had some Yamaha chips, but that must have been my mind playing tricks on me.

The AK4544 is a bit different from the rest of the buggers. I actually expect better performance from that one, seeing as AKM make some very good ADC and DAC converters.

@DL

They stated publically that the XE did not have working sound long before they removed the at-the-time-not-working AC'97 codec. So _I_ think you're skating uphill on this one. Like I said earlier, people like you were complaining that they had to pay for ICs they couldnt use. So Eyetech took it off to save ~5 EUR per board. Now it turns out that it really WAS a software problem (seriously, we tried back then as well) and those who complained about paying for ICs they couldn't use should go sit in the corner wearing funny hats.

I'll try to make a tool tonight that tells you whether your board has the chip or not. And ofcourse upload a new driver, probably with recording support too.

I think I'll try it with an AD1886A, because it also offers SPDIF output, like the SigmaTel IC and has more or less the same dynamic range values like the AKxxxx design. Seems to be a direct replacement for the SigmaTel IC.

the pinlayout is a bit different... have a look at: 40, 42, 43, 44 and 47

Yes I know, but AFAIK most of these pins are not used by the codec or not connected on the AmigaOne motherboard. I already checked the pin assignment for the AD1981B, which has more different pin assignments than the AD1886A. But I will check the pin assignment on the motherboard again for this AC97 codec.

Anyway, in the meantime I contacted SigmaTel to give me information about pricing and distribution. I doubt that they will response, but its worth a try (just for fun). Otherwise I'll try to get one of those Analog Devices parts.

So far all I've found is http://www.4starelectronics.com/catalog3/0230/66.html (search for part# stac9752t) who require a US$300 minimum order and don't list prices. I've got a quote request in to them in case a few of us can arrange something to meet that minimum.

oh well. go ebay, buy an older cheapo-x86-mobo and soldier it out. it isn't hard if you destroy the board :)

Ok, just downloaded my own driver from OS4depot and guess what... it works here fine! I'm using u-boot from 3 March, so that can't be it, so atm I don't know why there are problems with it. Will look some further...

That's great! It will show up at OS4Depot later today then? And what
about the little tool that checks if the chip is there or not?
