It does sadden me to think someone can have a go at the OS4 team because the are having a problem with an old and out of date third party application of which the the team has no responsibility for. |
You must be referring to the TurboPrint error I mentioned.
Have you tried using a printer on OS4 without Turboprint, it is just not possible. Do I have to now buy a new printer, difficult as only a few old printers are supported directly by OS4 in order to print text ?
Things worked PERFECTLY in OS4.1 pre update so something since has broken the functionality. It is also at kickstart level.
If this was some outdated package like DPaint I would understand but printer support in Amiga OS is so poor that Turboprint is a REQUIREMENT. Yes third party it may be but it cannot just be dismissed.
The OS4 team do not have responsibility for Turboprint as you say but they do have the responsibility for the Amiga native printer drivers, yet currently they are limited to only a few printers and do not have the functionality of Turboprint. When the native drivers are useable with the majority of printers available then by all means ditch Turboprint but until then it is IMPORTANT that any changes to the OS do not break it.
Manymodern printers will not even print plain text anymore so need TP to print text as graphics and it must be when doing this that the crash occurs in upd1 and upd2, but NOT with the base OS4.1 install. |

| I have the same problem with printing text.
Just tried out A2ps(68k version) from Aminet and this may be a workaround.
convert your text files to PS and then copy them to the PS: device to print. Use the -nn -ns -p options and you are there. Last edited by Spectre660 on 02-May-2010 at 11:36 AM. Last edited by Spectre660 on 02-May-2010 at 11:35 AM.

| Great to see 4.1.2? Updates might be minor, but are always welcomed especially adding new functionality as well as improving stability
Now OS 4.0 works very well on Peg, SAM and A1 we expect to see the next step ... and enjoy it _________________ OS 3.x AROS and MOS supporter, fi di good, nothing fi di unprofessionalism. Learn it harder way! SinclairQL and WII U lover :D YT http://www.youtube.com/user/rasvoja

I cannot attempt the update for a day or two. Is it still suggested/required to use a fresh partition for Update 2 ? |
Nope, this is an in-place upgrade. No need to burn an ISO it's simply an archive with an Installer. |
Thanks! I managed to get to it today. OWB & UnArc and it installed fine.

| Oh no the screen going blank issue are still there. It's improved and not blanking as easy as it used to do but it still does . That was the biggest issue that I had with update 1. So I guess I'll have to use the VGA port instead still. |

| Some ways to see download progress:
1) Open the target directory on the WB and watch the file size grow. 2) Open Notepad or Multiview (or anything) on another screen. Select Open and just display the target directory with the ASL requester, so you can see the file being saved. You can update the display at any time with RAmiga/U and the display will also be automatically updated when the download finishes. 3) List the resulting file in a Shell. Simply hit Up-Arrow every now and again to retest.
I'm sure there are others. _________________ cheers tony

Please don't shout this out too loud.. It's really embarrasing for OS4 not even being able to have some simple kind of download manager with its only really working browser. Even a simple list of downloads with the only option of stopping them would suffice IMO. At first anyway.. Last edited by Samwel on 03-May-2010 at 07:50 AM. no worries as TimberWolf should hopefully be here soon and if it's as good as IceWeasel on Debian then there will be no more of these complaints _________________ ____________________________ c64-2sids, A1000, A1200T-060@50(finally working!),A4000-CSMKIII ! Well there is Netsurf which works fine for me. But yeah with OWB it is lame, I've mentioned it over the last couple of years, not heard it directly from Joerg (the coder) but I have heard from others that apparently he doesn't feel a download manager is really a needed/essential feature, hence why we've never got one. A lot of people seemed to agree it wasn't essential back when I posted a thread about 18 months ago, but I personally think it is.
But I guess if the coder of OWB doesn't think it's warranted, or priority, makes sense that after 2 years we still don't have one. Maybe it'll only happen if someone else writes it?

| @danwood When OWB was still slow & buggy, a download manager was NOT important. With the release of OWB v3.25 I find it to finally be fast & stable all the time. So I think now is the time to add:
* Password manager (MUCH more important than a Download manager IMHO). * Download manager. * Better bookmark system (folders + bookmarks should appear as a name not URL). Last edited by ChrisH on 03-May-2010 at 03:44 PM.

There's the rub, because (as I understand it) the PS: device is installed by Turboprint, and is not part of the OS. _________________ Peter Swallow. A1XEG3-800 [IBM 750FX PowerPC], running OS4.1FE, using ac97 onboard sound.

I don't think thats entirely accurate. I'm pretty sure Joerg wanted to focus on getting the core browser stable before he started adding bells and whistles. It doesn't make much sense adding conveniences like a download manager when the browser itself was unstable and slow.
Having said that I think it's time for a download manager now that OWB is fast and stable. _________________ Micro A1 866 Mhz and AmigaOS 4.1 PowerMac G4 1.4 Ghz and MorphOS 2.7

Yes the PS: device is installed by Turboprint. If you are using Turboprint then you should have what you need to make things work.
You need gs-handler in L: and PS in DEVS:DOSDrivers With these and the config in Turboprefs set in PS options it works using the Ghostscript that comes with Amiga OS 4.x
Command Line option in config is Ghostscript:GS -sDEVICE=turboprint -q _________________ Sam460ex : Radeon Rx550 Single slot Video Card : SIL3112 SATA card

| Here is an OS 4.x way to print a .ps file.
using AmiGS in System:Utilities/AmiGS
Load AmiGS and select the .ps file to print. It displays the file then you select print. First printer option is Workbench printer. Click print at the bottom of the requester and file is printed to your default printer. even if it is a Turboprint setup. No PS: device needed. _________________ Sam460ex : Radeon Rx550 Single slot Video Card : SIL3112 SATA card

| Got it on Friday, and installed it just a few minutes ago... No problems, but when booting from cold boot, I get a "Loading AmigaOS 4 update 1" after thye UBoot, and "AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1" on the workbench title bar. Is that normal? _________________ Ordell Robbie: Is she dead, yes or no? Louis: Pretty much.
