hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Miracles happen: A1 onboard audio works!
   posted by DaveAE on 25-Oct-2005 20:46:09 (30636 reads)
This might come as a shock, but I've uploaded a working via686b onboard audio driver for the AmigaOne! Only the first batch(es) of A1's actually have the AC'97 chip physically on the board.

Update: New VIA686B AHI driver on OS4depot

Unfortunately, it was taken off later on as Eyetech didn't think it was ever going to work. You could just try the driver to see if you have such a chip, but you can also have a look on the motherboard: left to the AGP-port, under the gfx card either is a small Sigmatel chip or an empty square. Most people won't have the chip though.

Some clever guy found out what was wrong. I'll mention him later on if he wants to be mentioned, I'm not sure at this moment if he does. Normally, the BIOS/firmware sets up some registers of the VIA that make it work (ACPI), unfortunately back then we thought it was a hardware issue.

This first version is very basic. It is playback only, has CD-in monitoring, but no volume controls etc. This will come soon in a later version.

If you're lucky to have the AC'97 chip, give it a try. If you'll use it, I would appreciate a small donation of 5 euro to paypal@audio-evolution.com.

Kind regards and thanks to the guy who found out about it in the first place!

@ Helgis

After the amount of times you've played around in your A1 you would know if it has the chip or not.

No seriously, DaveAE was talking about uploading a newer version of the
VIA686B AC97 AHI-driver and a tool for checking if the soundchip is there
or not. When i tried the version that is already on OS4Depot, i got the
modes on the AHI Preference, but when trying to Test the sound, no sound...

@Helgis

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I downloaed the current driver from os4depot since people (including you) didn't get sound from it. I thought I uploaded the wrong one, but I didn't. Now I have to find out why it isn't working for you guys.
Helgis: do you have sashimippc?

please get it on os4depot, it's to reroute the serial debug to a shell.

This is the tool that will allow you to "capture" serial debug.
You can then post these results or redirect the output to a file, which you
can send to a developer to assist him with problem solving.

Best Wishes,

@All

Even that the AC97 Codecs still are on the motherboard somehow, it
doesn't mean that the onboard soundchip is there. I actually believe
it was removed, since my A1G4XE is one of the last and latest ones,
according to my Canadian friend (a member here) himself...

I should forget about this onboard soundchip and look for getting the
TerraTec Aureon 7.1 Space in November

The onboard sound chip is inside the Via 686b southbridge. This thread talks about only the Sigmatel codec was removed from manufacturing.

Indeed. You should forget about and ignore any talk about sound cards/chips/hacks, concentrate on your Terratec card, buy that and nothing else, and then be happy with it. Those are your orders, soldier, now get to it! :)

@DaveAE

I will go for TerraTec definitely. No doubt. I just hope a new
Envy24TH driver (the Aureon one) will be updated so that the
problems with CD and such can be done

Important

Ok, uploaded 5.2 including a check tool. This should really work this time. I forgot some crucial part that went unnoticed since I powered up a part of my VIA with another tool, and it seems to survive a power down...

Good work! I'll check the new version once it arrives at OS4Depot
Both the tool and the driver

@Helgis

You say your Canadian friend says its the new motherboard.
Please check on your motherboard. Its easy to see. If its
not there then you dont have the sound. And thats not strange.

@Kicko

I'll try with the new 5.2 version of the driver...

One claimed that he/she has already downloaded it. How come? It's still
not arrived on the OS4Depot yet, or what?

Why not just compare your board with this one on the picture?? If the chip on the picture aint there, then you obviousely dont have it or vice versa..

The chip is located next to the gfx card/agp slot..

@All

I checked my board very carefully. The chip is not there.

Will have to use my SB Live! 5.1 PCI-soundcard until
i get myself the TerraTec Aureon 7.1 Space

@Helgis

I'm a beta tester, that's why I have the 5.2driver when its still not on OS4Depot. (And its still not up as of this writing.)
