software Classic   software Classic : A-EON Technology Acquires Personal Paint
   posted by amigakit on 27-Nov-2014 15:33:19 (24036 reads)
A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that it has taken over the development of Personal Paint from Cloanto. The two companies had already started to cooperate in 2014 which resulted in the release of Personal Paint 7.2 and 7.3. These are the first new versions for several years, with the latest native versions available now on AMIStore for both AmigaOS 4.1 and AmigaOS 3.x.

As part of the agreement A-EON will exclusively develop and own all future AmigaOS versions of Personal Paint (including possible MorphOS and AROS ports). Additionally, A-EON and Cloanto will share joint ownership of Classic Amiga versions up to version 7.2, while Cloanto may continue to work on future non-Amiga versions.

Matthew Leaman, A-EON Managing Director, said, "A-EON Technology is proud to conclude this agreement with Cloanto. Personal Paint always had a strong following with Classic Amiga users and we are excited to drive it's future." Trevor Dickinson, A-EON’s co-founder added, "I've been an avid user of Personal Paint for many years. It became the leading easy-to-use Amiga program for bitmapped graphics and animation and was one of the first to support AGA and RTG graphics. These advanced features allowed Personal Paint to replace Deluxe Paint in Commodore's Amiga computer software bundles."

Personal Paint was the first commercial Amiga graphics program to break the 2Mb chip RAM barrier and to support PowerPC CPUs. However, it also included numerous other unique features which made it a favourite with many Classic Amiga owners. These included: professional colour reduction and merge, multiple brushes, filters, animation, file format plugins and stereograms together with PostScript and 24-bit printing. The constant reinvention of the possible applications of animated GIFs (also thanks to the expiration of related patents) helped drive continued demand for Personal Paint's exceptional support for palette based modes and optimised GIF code.

Cloanto's Michael C. Battilana commented on the transfer, "I am delighted to see future Amiga Personal Paint development efforts in the hands of an extremely motivated and talented team. I would also like to pay special thanks to Trevor. Without his generous commitment, the Amiga community wouldn't be as alive and kicking as it still is today."

It never ceases to amaze me that still, in 2014, we see people who are willing to do what is necessary to drive Amiga hardware and software forwards. And that's despite all of the "stuff" that's gone on in Amiga circles in the past. It's a tortured platform, but it's one that appears to have been unshakeable in spite of it over the decades.

This is thanks largely to the Amiga users, but also there are some core people (and we all know who they are) who are directly responsible for the continued development of Amiga classic and next generation hardware and software.

I will definitely purchase the classic version of PPaint. And not out of charity either - I am actually excited to get the new version(s) running on my A1200.

Cheers!

Brian.

180 units per platform will get to where we need to be to break even on this project - around 500 licences. With other software projects we have already exceeded this amount so it is viable.

Great to hear you have got money back from them all, wasnt so sure of that before.

Although (without knowing exact sales amounts or costs), we can of course question wether getting 1000 Eur profit from each invested 5000 euros is really a viable business yet.

But thank you from your investments.

@Amigakit

One question tho, how can I navigate to the Personal Paint download link unless Im aware of it from reading here or or associated Amiga forums? In a few days/weeks these News items will be gone and forgotten about, and only the people aware of the direct link will find it.

I had a peek on , a-eon.com, amigakit.eu and amigastore webfront, and couldnt see any way to navigate to said download link.
For most its probarly enough to know its available on Amigastore, but just figured Id adress that point.

We have now link the official www.ppaint.com to the ppaint.amistore.net to make it easier for the website to be found. Hope this helps!

@Amikit

I wondered where all that money goes that you only get 10 from each Ppaint sold in your calculations, but now that i visited that link i see you are charging only 15 from it. Wow, thats pretty cheap price, was expecting something higher.

Will definetily buy one copy for myself at some point. After all, although I dont necessarily have any urgent need for it, I do have used the free versions for years already, more or less, so I think it is just fair i put some bucks down from all that time already, especially when asking price is this small even.

Hi

We have to cover the initial purchase price that we paid Cloanto for the rights and source code. We also have to cover the costs for the two updates we have already commissioned and have been completed.

Then there are the new further updates we are embarking on in next few months. The next couple of new updates will be made available free of charge for customers who have bought v7.3 :)

Every project must break-even at the very least. If we can attract more users back to the Amiga, then the cost of these updates will be lower and lower as you would expect.

Text file to Aminet giving the info about commercial and free versions would be good too. It's the place people look for 68k software afterall, and remember that it's been there.

I found out that it is possible to buy 7.3 for 3.X without needing your store + login and have just bought it. As long as I can buy without store I will support new software (from you and from others)

Thank you very much- it is very much appreciated that you support our development work. The payment form is a temporary measure whilst we work on AMIStore OS 3 version.

@amigakit

I see, I didn't realize that you'd already paid so the project is currently in the red. Then yes, it makes perfect sense to push for breaking even before expanding out. Thanks for the clarification!

Yes, currently in the "red" but hopefully we can redress it and push forward with the new developments :)

@Overlow

Thanks, it's still very much work in progress but should get it finished in next day or so with some nice screenshots of the new PPaint 7.3. There is just not enough hours in the day with all the projects we have ongoing..

I have two personal A1200s at home, one in a tower with graphics card and another as original desktop configuration running just AGA. If I get PPaint running on both, I will capture the images on both and get them uploaded to PPaint.com so others may see the new additional features.

The PPaint brochure from AMIStore is now uploaded to website in PDF format.

Please bear with me while I get these tasks done :)

@all

Terrific! Nearly 6500 views so far for this news, just on this website alone.

thanx got it. Forgot to check Spam.

One thing from first try, it does not start on Aros 68k because of missing bullet.library. On Aros you have freetype2 instead for that.

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/Developer/Docs/Libraries/Bullet

perhaps that could be added what would be important for Aros support. Perhaps it might be solvable on Aros 68k by copying original files (I will check that)

7.2 had no problems with it so it must be because of last changes

You have to copy bullet.library from OS 3.x. MorphOS doesnt have it either.

Maybe we need to develop dummy bullet.library, I dont think full implementation is required at this date...
