To celebrate the launch of our FreeCiv tournament series the owners of the AmigaWorld.net FreeCiv server are offering a unique chance to win a New AmigaONE XE motherboard with 512Mb RAM!

updated

The prize will go to one lucky victor of the FreeCiv challenge league matches starting in January 2004 and concluding in March 2004! There are a limited number of places so register with your AmigaWorld.net identity on the AW FreeCiv Support Site !

To help you prepare for victory, AW will be running a series of 12 training matches throughout December 2003 at the weekend for different timezones across the globe to participate and learn the game. More details can be found on the AW FreeCiv Support Site or join us on IRC on server irc.amigaworld.net channel #awfreeciv.

If you already have an A1XE and you don't need another, we offer an A1XE upgrades package to the same monetary value!

Full terms an conditions that apply to the game will be posted on December 31st on freeciv.amigaworld.net.

Update Last night (25th) we successfully tried out a brand of the settings we call "speedciv" which takes about 2 hours to play and is far more frenetic than the standard freeciv We expect games to take 2-3 hours maximum now!

Excellent, I'll beat you all, just remember I said that when I run off with Dave's A1.

Just a point, especially given Ive just read the bitchy remarks
on amiga-news de.

1. It is a brand new AmigaONE mobo, it is not my personal
one although I have put up all the money for the prize.

2. No one is forcing you to play freeciv, if you don't like the game
and you don't think a prize of an A1 is enough to induce you to try
it out then really that is your personal affair. Consider it like a
football trophy, if you don't play football and don't want to learn
or can't be bothered to turn up for games then don't expect to win
the championship trophy.

3. AmigaWorld.net gets no "advertising hits" from running a game
of FreeCiv - this is a ludicrous suggestion - and is not funded
in the model suggested in an amiga-news.de comment.

4. If you think this should have gone towards "something worthwhile"
like Mozilla then there is nothing stopping you forking out some of your
own personal cash to do just that. I believe it is up to me how I
decide to invest my time and money.

It seems strange to me that this is a "free" service to everyone
except me but I am getting criticism over it and sarky comments.
No wonder people get dissolusioned trying to do something fun and good out of
their own pocket and leave the community.

However, I will not let it get to me any further. If you want to
join up and feel you can spare the time and effort needed to
be a contender please do so, if not, spare me the nasty-o-gram
comments on other sites and even on here.

I would like this to be a fun experience for all.

Dave.

Just to expand on that, Amigaworld.net advertisers do not pay for impressions, they pay for a fixed time period with unlimited impressions, Eyetech have paid for 12 months with unlimited impressions.

To those who gave positive feedback, thanks very much it's appreciated.

To the rest of you... I seriously don't know what to say. People have put a lot of their own time and money (Dave especially) into this project, just to try and bring a bit of community back into the kommunity, but as always there's the naysayers.

To be frank, whilst suggestions and constructive criticism are welcome from everyone (even if you don't want to play the game)... *SNIP*

--edit-- Never mind - I look forward to seeing some of you on the AW.net Freeciv server soon

--edit again-- Please note, I taught myself PHP by doing the scripting for the freeciv site - so if there are any problems, please email me with details! Your input would be very helpful, so cheers in advance!

Ian

Allowing anonymous posting will always result in bitchy remarks. I'm sorry that you let this get you that much (you shouldn't), but there's not much I can do about that, given our site's policy regarding moderation.

I posted this comment and you seem to have misunderstood it completely.

I was replying to some anonymous poster who complained that you give away boards to "game players" instead of "developers".

I just explained that this is an AmigaWorld.net promotion, and therefore the main aim (IMHO) is to increase the popularity of the site (and this way - even if indirectly - the traffic, the popularity and the advertisment income), not to promote the A1 platform.

This was in no way meant to be a negative remark - in fact I'd be happy if we at amiga-news.de would have the funds to do promotions like that - to increase our popularity, traffic and advertisement income.

Honestly, there's nothing to worry about regarding *my* comment. And why do you care what some annymous idiots post?

I did not suggest that. I assumed it works this way (it does on amiga-news.de).

But the fixed sum they pay for a fixed period is determined by various things, amongst them the popularity (i.e. hits) of the site and the economical situation of the whole scene.

That's what I was talking about. But DaveP really misunderstood my intentions.

DaveyD has already stated that any advertisment/ sponsorship revenue is fixed for a period of time.

The main aim here is to set up a fun challenge and give away a bit of kit that members of this site aspire to have, no more and no less. Given we had many comments after
setting up the UT server that we didn't have anything for non FPS fans or Amiga only owners ( although find me an Amiga owner that doesnt have access to a Mac or a PC or MacOnLinux ). So we set up the FreeCiv server. The idea to give away something came later.

Given we have invested in a good server, it seems to use only natural to extend our support for alternatives ( games, maconlinux, webring, developers etc ) to cater for some of the interests of the site users.

As I said above, it got to me and I won't let it get to me anymore. This is about having fun.

Finally, your comment on there did not annoy me per se, I just
felt it was innaccurate and could be seen to ascribe mercenary
motivations to this competition ( how many page hits would pay me
back for the A1 I wonder ) so I rolled it up into the clear up.

Dave.

I know that, see my previous posting. And I was not suggesting you were tring to get rich or something, I was just listing examples and possible reasons for "increasing a site's popularity".

Look, I'm sorry if you feel insulted by my assumption that you're trying to improve the site's popularity. I don't understand why this could be regarded as an insult, but be assured that I'm sorry about it.

I never suggested otherwise - to me, increasing amiga-news.de's popularity sounds like fun ;)

(don't ask me how, but I seemed to have missed this paragraph in your last mail)

Probably the language barrier (I hope). I don't think anybody (except paranoid AW admins of course ) will regard my posting as negative (or inaccurate) towards AW, especially given the fact that I'm replying to somebody attacking AW.

Me! Me! I have always used an A1200T with 040 until I got my AmigaOne, and I don't have MacOnLinux or MacOS. Do I win another AmigaOne?

@nicomen:

You might have had a chance, if they had stuck to offering an A1 as a prize. Now they are offering A1 upgrade packages, which means I'll be playing, pretty much ruining your chances.

Seriously, folks, just ask Vir, he'll tell you I'm pretty impossible to beat (I still fondly remember the looks on the faces of his phalanx when I sent my tanks at them...).

It appears that installing FreeCiv on classic Amigas is a bit of
an art - a lot of room for it to go wrong!

Can people post their install issues that they had on here and how
they got around them and it will go into the FAQ. There are a
lot of people having trouble out there!

Dave.

@cgutjahr
I've always liked amiga-news.de, you guys have always been supportive of AW (unlike some other sites) and often announcing when the Fleecy Q&As are available.

So I take no offence what some anonymous person says.
