   posted by tomazkid on 18-Jul-2005 15:33:04 (10115 reads)
The long awaited IBrowse 2.4 is to be demonstrated at Amiga-shows on the 20th anniversary of the Amiga-computer!

Quote:
On 23rd July 2005, IBrowse 2.4 will be making its public debut at three shows around the globe. The demo will consist of:

* current IBrowse 2.4 beta, 68k build
* current JavaScript library beta, PPC OS4 build
* current Flash plugin beta, 68k build

and will show the new features that will be available in IBrowse 2.4. The shows that will be demo'ing are:

AmiGBG in Sweden, by Andreas Loong
AmiWest in USA, by Richard Drummond
Fyanica in Hungary, by Stephen Fellner

Please note this is NOT the launch of IBrowse 2.4, which will hopefully be later this year

I think IB 2.4 is free for those who have bought 2.3.

I bought 2.3 some weeks ago and my FireFox/pc usage is now minimal :)

Have to install new AWeb too...

You can buy (and maybe register too?) it from IOSpirit's site.

Well I do hope that future versions will have CSS. I do rely heavily on CSS on my webpages.

Still Ibrowse was really great, so I really hope it can be great again...

It is worth remembering that since IBrowse 2.0 was released 6 years ago, all upgrades since have been free, not to mention discounts for those that bought IBrowse 1.x. Likewise 2.4 is a free update too.

@Jose

I personally feel that it's worth it. For example, tabs and multiple windows make a totally different experience.

Hmm I guess I am the only one who is not violently happy (Bjork TM) here due iBrowse 2.4 release. Why? It's probably best browser for Amiga in terms of speed and pure html displaying (and far most expensive too) but it is so much outdated that is unusable in the *real* world. I know there will be 3.0 with some CSS support sometime in the future, but not today and not tomorrow... So why you are so happy about?

@ExiE

Yes, we know everyone won't be happy with IBrowse 2.4, which is why from the announcement of its pending release 2 years ago we stated implicitly what it would, and more importantly would not, contain. There are no negative suprises in this release as we stated there would be no CSS from the start, but there are a few positive things we did add that weren't originally planned such as the PPC JS library etc.

@ Vader

Don't mind ExiE. We all know that we should see the glass as half full, rather than half empty.

I bought IBrowse the moment IOSpirit started to sell it, and never regreted it. It allows me to do everything I want, including online secure banking. Now, I'm happily waiting for version 2.4 and 3.0, and I know for sure it's gonna be worth it.

Thank you for replying to every concern of people, and thanks to all other involved.

Firbodi

@Jose
I bought IB with the exchange rates for USD being 'less than great' for the most part. Was I 'happy' about the price? Not really...it's expensive for something I use for free elsewhere (Firefox). Realistically, though, our market really is too small to NOT buy software in right now- if you really want to see a 3.0 (and beyond?), I'd mark it off as something you're simply going to have to do. The days of 'I'll see what comes out' could be a bad move in the small remaining market.

Having said that, registered IB is fairly capable. Yes, it's annoying on AW when it spits out warnings to a console window that can't seemingly be disabled (might be my config?). But tabbed browsing, plus enough compatibility with web sites/HTML makes it possible for me to stay on the A1/OS4 _much_ longer than I'd be able to using AWeb alone in it's current state.

Yeah, I wish they'd do a PPC native build...but once 2.4 is out the door, I believe 3.0 is the next target, which is desperately needed by us, and will hopefully at least remove the lack of a modern browser from the 'problem list.' It really is a pretty good browser.

As much as 170 bucks Canadian is a bit too expensive * glub * for browser, I mean, a little, * blinks * but it is worth the purchase. I am going to buy it when I have enough saved but I want it in a media, such as disks, it will be adorable if there is the C= logo in the disk * grin * now that would bring some great found fuzzy feeling. Would they provide me a diskette with a C= logo for IBrowser, manual etc? O_O for the price of I mean 170 bucks, it is a legitable question to ask you know.

An optimist a badly informed pessimist

Edit:
I used Ibrowse since like forever I like it the best of all available browsers ! It's just the way it works. With tabs and so on....

It works well on the majority of sites I visit. Flash would be nice, and I would like it to be faster, thus OS4 native....

But for now I would say it is a great piece of software ! (not that I dont apriciate the effort of Aweb's developers, as they are doing a great job too !)

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Vader,

You haven't read the threads here enough to know that Exie is a resident troll.

I'm not kidding.

Excellent news, I will eventually be buying it. (Lack of $, ATM. )

No body answered my question would I get that adorable blue red C= logo on the floppy diskette with manuals, etc if I ordered the package that comes with the disk ? I need them in disks because I am using Amiga 1200 desktop and * starts thumping feet on the floor as I whine loudly * I AM NEVER TOWERING THE A1200!, it doesn't come with a CD-ROM.

hell even i am not happy about ib2.4 not having up to date browser capabilities like IE and FX but hell when i browse in ibrowse its FUN! compared to IE or Aweb for instance.

i am looking forward to the ppc JS among other things and well i know i will love it though i will be reminded all the time about things that wont work in 2.4 but helllllllllo??? if i was obsessed about what others can do then i would have had a pc or a mac or a linux box...but i dont and i never will!

all i can say is...exie has a point but there is clear benefits with 2.4 , things like improved speed , improved JS , Flash plugin , hot keys which i requested (to ease use even further) and as long as its progressing..well THATS the point and well its better than getting latest IE with Spyware/adware and so on

stop trolling and remeber...aslong as its an improvement and its free ... ITS POSITIVE!
