hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Miracles happen: A1 onboard audio works!
   posted by DaveAE on 25-Oct-2005 20:46:09 (30637 reads)
This might come as a shock, but I've uploaded a working via686b onboard audio driver for the AmigaOne! Only the first batch(es) of A1's actually have the AC'97 chip physically on the board.

Update: New VIA686B AHI driver on OS4depot

Unfortunately, it was taken off later on as Eyetech didn't think it was ever going to work. You could just try the driver to see if you have such a chip, but you can also have a look on the motherboard: left to the AGP-port, under the gfx card either is a small Sigmatel chip or an empty square. Most people won't have the chip though.

Some clever guy found out what was wrong. I'll mention him later on if he wants to be mentioned, I'm not sure at this moment if he does. Normally, the BIOS/firmware sets up some registers of the VIA that make it work (ACPI), unfortunately back then we thought it was a hardware issue.

This first version is very basic. It is playback only, has CD-in monitoring, but no volume controls etc. This will come soon in a later version.

If you're lucky to have the AC'97 chip, give it a try. If you'll use it, I would appreciate a small donation of 5 euro to paypal@audio-evolution.com.

Kind regards and thanks to the guy who found out about it in the first place!

Curty: and if the driver fails, you have at least potato chips and some beer. Win-win.

@Curty

DMA is fine, just so long as you don't use ethernet at the same time.
Don't forget about the USB, although that's fine on XE's as long as you don't unplug your devices.
All these problems can be either fixed or worked around, so they're not really an issue.

Wow, this is a shock!

I have a chip on mine!

Just waiting on OS4 depot to download!

Cheers,

I think some people are confused about the location of the sigmatel chip

If you look at the first image you will see there is a chip in line with the AGP slot right by the edge of the board.

http://digilander.libero.it/amilinux/big/Dscf0003.jpg

On this second image you will see that there is an empty space in line with th AGP slot.

@Rob,

Yep - I've got that chip. - Also shows up in the PCI scan command.

Cheers,
Bean.

What's the number of the missing AC97 codec IC? From what I can see on my AmigaOne motherboard, it shouldn't be that hard to solder it on the board, as only the chip is missing (well, if you can get this part). Or is it possible to use an alternate AC97 codec (because National Semiconductor parts are available from Newark)

@Rob:

Thanks for the clarification and the photos, I had problems locating the place of the chip, I was watching at the opposite side of the AGP slot, where the empty brown slot is located. I'm happy to say that my XE G4 has the chip ^^

Thanks a lot for this very nice surprise, DaveAE! This is something I was waiting for when I just bought my Amiga, and I didn't thought it would ever happen.

@Geri

The chip is surface mounted I don't think you'd be able to solder it by hand. I think you must be looking at U45 the sigmatel chip is mounted at U43 check the pictures I linked. I would have circled the area I'm referering to but I dont have anywhere to host the pictures.

@Geri:

It's quite awkward to read the number of the IC, I had to remove my Radeon and watch it closely to be able to read the tiny letters. This is the chip's code:

SIGMATEL
STAC9752T
CB2U008
0247

and the chip is labeled U43 on the motherboard.

Another thought, is there an ampty site on MicroA1's for this AC97 chip? I wonder if there's a slight cost-reduction opportunity to swap the seperate sound chip for the AC97, if Eyetech makes additional batches of MicroA1. I imagine the rear connectors are only wired wo whtever codec the seperate sound chip is wired to, and thre's no connecting codecs to the 686b on the micro... This probably won't be doable, but jsut for the heck of it I decided to ask.

@Kneedeep

It isn't socketed. It's surface mounted (stuck straight to the board). It's right at the edge of the board just above and to the right of the backplate of the GFX card. It's about 1cm square.

The good news for me is that I have it. The bad news is that I'm able to see it - i.e. my A1 is still in pieces (and will probably stay that way until I can afford a second monitor for it).

Do A1-SEs have this chip at all?

If we don't bombard them but an elected dealer asks how many chips we would need to purchase to qualify an order, I recon we could get that hole filled. Any ideas or volunteers could mean another great step for A1 owners.

Time and time again, we find the A1 boards were not as bad as people made out, just the software wasn't ready!

@Varthall

Thanks!

So the chip is a "STAC9752/53, Two-Channel, 20-Bit, AC'97 2.3 Codecs with Microphone and Jack Sensing".

Unfortunately it seems that SigmaTel has very few distributors in Europe. Even the big distributors, like Newark and AVnet do not list SigmaTel.

@Rob

Yes, the IC is in a SMD package , but there are other possibilities than using a soldering station. On the other side it should be possible with a 0.4mm soldering iron.

edit: The chip is the 5V version (STAC9752T - not a STAC9753T (3.3V) nor a STAC9752AT!) in a 48 pin TQFP package.

edit #2: corrected package info

Indeed, and I suspect the same will happen with the DMA/Ethernet problem, this is why I decided not to do the fix and wait instead for a software solution.
