Alex The Allegator 4 (from Free Lunch Design) is a fun game with source available. I just started looking at it this weekend for a GP2X port. It needs DUMB (a mod player library) although it looks easy to remove that requirement initially simply by removing music support.
|
I had a look at this on the weekend but got stuck with its requirement for DUMB, but I will have another look at it again soon. I have sound implemented on Allegro now (although just for short samples/fs) so it is time to start looking at mod/mp3/ogg playback libraries as many games seem to rely on these.

Allegro is a good opportunity for some new ports, but it's also a really good opportunity for any wannabe games makers/programmers out there. It has a really easy to use API (I think easier than SDL) and is a great opportunity for anyone who'd like to learn C and make some simple games. It's kinda the AMOS of C programming.
|
Yes, it is very easy to use! I think that many people use it not because they want to write cross platform games, but because it is just an easy API to code for. It would be great if someone used it to write some Amiga games but I'm not sure if I could see that happening. :-/

Does this port rely on any OS4 specific API's? I'd like to have a look at what's involved in porting to OS 3.x and AROS (I don't have an OS4 capable system although I remain hopeful that it will happen sooner or later).
|
There are a couple that it relies on but they could easily be worked around. The main task in porting it would be that it currently uses the OS4 style API calling convention (ie. IExec->AllocMem() rather than AllocMem()) as I usually code only for OS4 these days so I did it like that out of habit. But it's nothing that a search and replace won't fix.
It would run well on AROS but due to the fact that many games use up to 90% CPU time on my 800 Mhz G3 A1 Micro, I am not sure how many games would run successfully on OS3. There would be a few (such as the classic Sword of Fargoal remake that I keep playing!) but not as many as OS4/Morph OS/AROS.
Anyway, once I get the OS4 port finished I'll get the source into the official Allegro Subversion repository and anyone can have a hack at it for their favourite platform. |

I pretty much removed the requirement for DUMB last weekend while trying to port to the GP2x, but something was wrong with my build environment (it's my first attempt to build anything for this device) and my wife decided I was giving too much attention to the computer and not enough to her so I had to abandon it until next weekend. Once I prove it I'll let you know. The source compiles fine, but I'm getting some linker errors, it might simply be that the Allegro API has changed since Alex4 was made.
DUMB seems to sit entirely on top of the Allegro sound API so it should be easy to port, again I'm going to attempt to port it to the GP2x (if I get the time), but no promises, time is short at the moment.

When you release the source I'll definitely take a look, AROS is a project I've always wanted to contribute something to.
Thanks for all your work on this |
