hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AmiZilla Booty Splits Four Ways
   posted by DiscreetFX on 28-Sep-2007 6:07:44 (13301 reads)
For Immediate Release

September 28th, 2007

We are trying something new to stimulate AmiZilla development. The Booty is now available as a split if a team can successfully port it on their favorite Amiga OS type system. It breaks down this way:

Amiga OS 4.0 = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

MorphOS = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

AROS = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

Amiga OS 3.1= Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

While it will be less money to the winner, if they are able to port to their favorite system it will mean that the technical difficulty's that some have complained about porting to 3.X are now removed. Also we believe that once one port is complete the others will fall into place. Of course if the same team did all four ports then they would get 100%. We hope this can push AmiZilla forward and not hold it back any longer. Donations are optional but always welcome if you feel this will push the contest forward.

Best regards

Since it seems impossible getting a team together to work on a version that runs on everything, I think this is a great idea. I have already contributed funds to the bounty, and if it needs to be altered to get that money into developer's hands then so be it.

Maybe it my average Joe interpretation of the who bounty scheme.
But as it has been advertised for a very long time under the original terms and conditions
it will be those that alter the contract illegally that will be causing the trouble for themselves.

You can agree to disagree.

Current total bounty is $10,000+

If anything, there should be 4 independent and brand new bounties set up from scratch with a professional Terms & Conditions attached. The existing bounty could then still grow without disturbing the peace or breaking the law.

Did the bounty start at $10,000?

No, but it got big fairly quickly. One of the netscape folks donated almost 5K and DiscreetFX donated 2K, so the number grew really quickly. I think it interesting with as much people have been complaining about not enough progress on this that the first real effort to jump start the program gets so many complaints.

You understand the original bounty requires a port to OS 3.1, OS 4.0, AROS and MorphOS (all 4) to get paid right? A task that has had several people not take the effort, because they dont have the ability to create one or more of the ports. Now each port is worth an equal though smaller amount, I'm not sure why you (and others) are upset about this but would like to understand.

Previously, the guy that did the enormous amount of work to remove those techical difficulties and prepare things for the other ports to fall into place will now receive 1/4 of the reward originally offered. And now that the other ports are "easy", that relatively little effort will receive much of the reward of the first guy's heavy lifting. Sorry, but that situation would actually end up demotivating me if I was trying to be that first guy.

This was my initial thought as well. They /really/ hard part is getting Firefox to run on any one of these OSs. Once you get it on one, it's relatively simple to port it between the AmigaOS-ish variants. 95+% of the work is in getting to the first one. With this structure, it's no longer worth it to be the first one, which means we get none. Honestly, paying the whole bounty to the first person/team that successfully gets Firefox running on any single one of these platforms would likely be the best motivator -- once one's done, it would likely appear on the other platforms shortly thereafter.

@Joshua

Nothing is stopping you from doing all four ports then releasing them at the same time so you can win 100% of the contest booty.

He is not being a thief, the original goal was 4 executables with all the source to get the 10K+, the goal now is 1 executable is worth 1/4 each. That original design has been alot of the problem getting people to work on it, because 4 working versions were needed. Now, someone can work on finishing the AROS version or the MOS version or the OS 4 version and not have 3 more versions looming over there head before they get paid. I also disagree with the call by others to divide it up differently then even quarters. This way, the MOS team and the AROS team and the OS 4 are likely to work together because completion of one group doesnt impact the money for the other if the one who completes it first gets 40 or 50 percent helping another group is much less likely because you will want your group to get done first so you get the larger prize.

I hadn't thought of it like that, but that makes this a very good move by Bill.

May I suggest something: Instead of porting just one GNU-based application, wouldn't it be much better to port an entire GNU runtime enivonment, including an emulation for the X11 libraries? Then, all the tools would be in place to port all sorts of GNU-based applications.

Isn't that exactly what Cygnix is?

I see this as a positive move as well... the terms of the original bounty were far too onerous. It's also shameful that Amiga/Hyperion have never become actively involved as a browser is absolutely critical to this platform.

As an aside, did anyone ever investigate what the Opera license involves? I'm not suggesting that it's the best solution, just curious to hear what they require.

Bill?

He's not a thief yet. Thats all I can say. I've made up my mind.

4 x Brand new bounties or its a criminal offense. If anything the original terms were vague and ambiguous.

The AmiZilla Project must fully compile with running binaries on each of the following Amiga-like OS's: OS3.1, OS3.5+, MorphOS native version, Amiga OS 4.0 native version, UAE, Amithlon, DraCo. This is not anything like ambiguous or anything AmigaOS4 only as you first portrayed... it's your misunderstanding of the language the barrier not actually what has been said...

Opra Software never returned our e-mails.

@meet.mrnrg

$10,418.02 divided by 4 = $2604.505 per booty

Making the bounty for the first port to any of these platforms larger than the rest is an idea worth considering. It would encourage people to to the hard work of the initial port to any Amiga OS system. I have no problem with splitting the bounty into four bits. It looks like this is the result of feedback from those attempting to port it.
