Software News   Software News : AmigaOS 4.1 Update 4

Text from Hyperion Entertainment Blog:

Just a quick note to say the development and testing teams are working on AmigaOS 4.1 Update 4 right now.

Several issues identified in Update 3 and earlier are being addressed thanks to direct customer feedback via Hyperion's support forum. A huge thanks to all those that have taken the time to register and post your bug reports! AmigaOS can only get better with direct customer feedback so keep it coming.

Along with the usual assortment of bug fixes, there may well be a surprise or two as well.

It's nice to see that work is being done.

But I don't understand the need of announcing that work is being done on a minor update unless there are users with big problems. I mean, why announcing it now instead of announcing it when it's finished and available for end users? I don't get it.

No, no ISO!! I do NOT want to make a complete reinstall just because of some bugfixed libs!

@Crumb

To keep the momentum going of course
(and stop complaints...)

This is very good news, have had several problems since update 3 on my SAM460 which I have posted on Hyperion forum site, thank you to all the team and beta testers for their hard work

Just to avoid silence, and all that "when, maybe, if". No one till now was 100% sure that update4 will out, and what hyperion do for now (or not to do at all). So, plain users now know that work in update4 is started, and as it was "announcement", then it will be not so long to wait.

Imho that better to announce it like this, in compare with all the specualtion talks about.

How we all should to know, what will be next if not by this announcement ? Asking on forums again and again ?

As for "minority" of update, imho it will be not so minor. It will be someting the same as beetwen morphos 2.6 and 2.7. It will have: mui fixes (so muiowb will works better), usb2.0 fixes and some fixes in gfx drivers/and p96 (that what i know).

I hope for the O4 users, the updating process is like an updating process should be and not another update that forces a lot of people to do a clean install... I wouln't exactly call that updating.

As I said over on A.org, I think there should be an option:

1) A downloadable archive for performing a simple update so that users don't have to reinstall from scratch, reconfigure their preferences, mess about with ISOs and blank CDs and so on;

2) An option to download as an ISO as well, thus enabling simpler installation from scratch for those who need or want to do so.

Of course the archive could be included on the ISO as well, so the CD could be used to upgrade or install from scratch, but personally I much prefer the upgrade option.

Great news by the way

I mainly hope for two fixes:

1. Make the swapping at least as stable as it was with update 2.

2. Fix the broken audio+scrolling bug.

Huh???? Why would you have to make a complete reinstall?? You could have a upgrade installer on the ISO as well. This way we dont have to first install os4.1, then update 1, then update 2, then update 3 and then finally update 4.
It takes alot of extra time and hassle to have to manually upgrade from each version to the next.
With a new bootable iso image the user can choose themselves if they want to use the upgrade or full install. But i guess that is a bad thing as well??

An ISO option would be good, as others have said. Even better if the installer on the ISO identified updates needed for the existing system and offered the choice of updating the existing system or a fresh install.

Would be nice for OS updates to come via AmiUpdate, although I guess there may be issues with ensuring updates are only available to registered users. Maybe notification via AmiUpdate and then redirection to the Hyperion log-in page?

Great news, Update 4 is confirmed to be in-hand by Hyperion themselves, rather than speculation on the forums.

As for .iso, or update. If it was a full .iso to install from scratch, how much time would that take to be tested by the beta-testers? surely that would delay the release of update 4, and the more complicated it is (update or full install), the more testing required.
I would rather a small .lha archive update sooner, rather than an .iso later.

just my 5 cents worth. (Hey, I'm in the UK, that should be pence worth )

This is an UPDATE not a new OS version.

I only want to download a small package to update my system, not an entire CDs worth of files. Some of us are limited by BT to 512kbps, so the smaller the download the better.

A few months back Hyperion (well S.Solie representing them) said they would now prefer smaller updates with faster developing times, they also improved communication a lot (thanks to the forum).
This is proof they're seriously getting their act together.
Good news.
