software AROS   software AROS : Icaros 1.4 and AspireOS 1.7 released! Odyssey Web Browser 1.16 Inside!
   posted by deadwood on 9-Mar-2012 5:51:46 (8567 reads)
We are happy to announce immediate availability of new major versions of two AROS distributions! Icaros 1.4 and AspireOS 1.7 are both packed with fixes and improvements to AROS that took place in recent months as well as new and updated applications. Both distributions also contain a gift from us, the developers and maintainers, to you, the community - Odyssey Web Browser. Freshly ported from latest MorphOS version!

About Odyssey Web Browser 1.16

Odyssey, developed by Fabien Coeurjoly, is the most advance browser for Amiga-like OSes. From today it's latest version, 1.16, is also available for AROS as part of Icaros 1.4 and AspireOS 1.7. Please join us in celebrating reaching another milestone in AROS journey! You can see Odyssey in action in the following videos: Icaros 1.4, AspireOS 1.7

The version we place in your hands is the first public release and we are aware that not all of the features present in the original are available in this version. We are however hard at work at making improvements to Zune to make the Odyssey even a better experience! You can support this effort by donating to the bounty. This first version is also an exclusive bundle (*) with Icaros 1.4 and AspireOS 1.7 - be sure to get one those distributions to enjoy the best browsing experience on AROS to date!

About Icaros 1.4

Icaros Desktop 1.4 is the new "point release" of the most known AROS distribution. This new version includes many changes and enhancements, giving users a better experience and amazing tools like Odyssey Web Browser, Audio Evolution 4, Frying Pan and many others. Coders will find a complete development environment with tools, libraries and languages, such as the latest versions of PortablE, fpc and so on. Icaros Desktop Live! also provides games and utilities for your every days fun, bringing the richest amiga-like desktop environment available on commodity hardware. Classic Amiga addicts will also enjoy playing their favorite games on ADF files without the need of original Kickstart files from Commodore, while other emulators included in the distribution allow access to software written for most platforms of the past.

Icaros 1.4 can be downloaded from http://www.icarosdesktop.org

About AspireOS 1.7

This AROS Distribution is very basic. The included software are well tested. AspireOS tries to be as close to the original Amiga OS as possible. To learn more about AspireOS and to download the latest release go to www.aspireos.com

(*) - Because of the changes to the overall system that have been made to ensure Odyssey works well, please do not try and extract from the distributions unless you fully understand what is needed and also understand you may be wrong. We want all users to enjoy this great new browser and not have their experience ruined by having the wrong version of support files installed.

Zune was actually a nice surprise - it did not require that much improvements ;)

was my impression lately that with few grips here and there it improved the compatibility a lot. just none did it before. congrats anyway. you are my hero!

in the text they write that it is complicated to install alone because of dependencies. So you have to install one of the two distributions that have integrated it.

@ nikosidis
Εκπληκτική δουλειά, μπράβο!

I never tried AspireOS, so it was a surprise to see the WB screen coming alive!

@ paolone
I`ll try the new one ASAP. Nice to see those enhancements! It`s all for the best.

@ ncafferkey
You`re right!

Impressions : The gfx chip isn`t supported (native modes for nvidia mostly) and booted at 640x400@4 bitplanes. The responsiveness was faster than expected (experience from the hosted version), but it`s not easy to use it (like having a basic 3.x WB screen!).
AHI has filesave only modes, the touchpad works fine & KB also (I remember some kind of problems in KB with linux!). A USB FAT volume was mounted (thanks to poseidon), but failed to initialize my wireless USB mouse.
I think I`ll stick with the hosted version a little while (Icaros FTW)...

@Cass

It sounds like you're falling back to VGA mode. You might be able to get VESA working with different settings (e.g. set vesa=1024x768x16 in the GRUB menu).

yes, i didn't see the lnk for strange firefox 10.0.2 problems
however now i have several problems with this version..with E8500 and GTS250
today, don't work, but tonight i try to delete ATA=32bit string and now is ok in VESA.

After USB installation, i see if works in nvidia native..or i again have to delete this ATA 32bit.

Absolutely EPIC! I can't wait to play with Odyssey this weekend. This was a giant missing piece that can now be scratched off the ever shortening list.

@ ncafferkey

Posting this from the latest Icaros distro, and the amazing OWB! This piece of SW was exactly what the Amiga was missing! It`s like IBrowse with all thge modern features...

Regarding the AspireOS, is crippled on my setup, so I won`t bother with grub. I`ve already edited the VESA modes on the hosted version, and it works like a charm.

Another amazing feature is Janus, the UAE integration on AROS(AmiBridge). Watch this video, a "how to" Amibridge setup

I really like the new OWB, for some reason, I think it feels a bit
like the old Amiga browser 'Voyager'. On the other hand, Voyager
always crashed etc. but it was a very polished product. Just
like Fab's OWB.

Fab is fab(olous)!

Thanks

Tried installing under Max OS X Lion, says the downloaded file is damaged.

Windows 8 is having trouble identifying the file as well.

@djrikki

Use the Unix command 7za to extract the file.

As I said in the other thread, 7zX is also a good choice on the Mac. I guess it's a just a front-end to 7za.

@thread

I must add to the chorus of thanks! I'm still still bowled over by the Odyssey release. I'm writing this in Odyssey now and the whole thing is so impressive. In my playing around it hasn't crashed or done anything weird at any point. Everything is fast and smooth, just like I'm used to in Safari and Chrome. Incredible stuff for a first release. Thanks again to Fab and Deadwood.

Chris
