| I will definitely donate to this bounty, as soon as I figure out what money I have available to me, after switching health insurance policies. I also have some expenses in the near future that are undetermined at this time, so I have to wait, before I can donate to anything, but want to show my support of this project, as I believe that the Odyssey web browser is the best that is available now for us to use and will continue to get better in the future.
Thanks to Fab for allowing this bounty and project to go forward. _________________ Amiga! The computer that inspired so many, to accomplish so much, but has ended up in the hands of . . . . . . . . . .

| @fab: how about to remain the head maintainer on the open repository, a person who may or may not accept others patches. i understand you like working on your own, likely because there is not much skilled enough people around. nevetheless we should think of pulling most advantage of this situation for the users, for the other developers but also for you. perhaps there are tasks you may easier delegate in this situation. |

| this is great news, as has been said the missing YT feature I feel has really been pluged by QT now, but its nice to have a modern browser for html5 apps. I cant help but feel the bounty is set a little high, I mean its more than what Timberwolf was able to raise and it just to make it opensource we still need developers to port it.
I will donate but I just wonder what happens to the money if the project falls though, how long will it last, I hate seeing these bounty with money attached to it but have clearly been dead for a long time like the Flash port, I do feel future bounty should make it clearer and maybe close dead or in-active bounty and put the money towards other bounties Last edited by amigang on 13-Nov-2013 at 06:07 PM. I am afraid you are mistaken. The Project Timberwolf campaign raised 7,063.69 EUR, which would be 9,468.17 US dollars with today's exchange rate. So, the bounty goal for Odyssey is almost 2,000 USD below the amount that was raised for Timberwolf.
It should also be noted that Project Timberwolf was aimed at a single operating system only and did not guarantuee that the sources would be shared so it could be ported to other platforms. Odyssey, on the other hand, will be made open source and explicitly targets AmigaOS as well as AROS, so it should attract a more diverse pool of donors (i.e. individuals & companies from the AmigaOS and AROS communities).

You would be surprised. There have been quite a number of projects that had seemed to be dead for years even but suddenly found a developer and were completed rather quickly. Jason McMullan's work on the kickstart replacement projects is a prime example.Last edited by ASiegel on 13-Nov-2013 at 06:44 PM.

I´m unsure too, who will made the port when the bounty is reached? |
That is one thing I wonder about as well.. There arent really that many developers left that would be capable of handling such a project.. Even if the goal is reached there is a good chance nothing will ever come out of it. |

Also Timber Wolf is still not finished. I am hoping that OWB will only see the bounty released when it is actually done and useable.
I still hope that Timber Wolf will be completed one day then OS4 will be in a much better position. _________________ Sam

| It would be good if we can have a slimline browser that does not need more than 10 MB to open a web page.
If one is no work on a browser, optimize for under 10MB browser resource usage.
built in facebook, twitter posting, notify etc.
make browsing experience better, not just the same.
Its a good project, lets see if anyone can think of future capabilities. _________________ Download 499.26 Mbps, 659.94 Mbps Upload :)

Hoping the best for this project.
Thanks Fab to accept to sell your sources and thanks to the OS4 volunteers to try to port them ( another bounty for their "salary" ? )
Seriously hoping that Qt5 will give us a very modern browser too.
Good luck Last edited by zzd10h on 14-Nov-2013 at 12:30 AM.

Good idea for the bounty, it's always good to have more options available, and OWB is the browser I use when I'm using AOS. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X

You mentioned dependencies...
@developers for AmigaOS4
Although raw CPU power can counter lack of video h/w acceleration somewhat when talking about AmigaOne X1000, I would hope people realize that there is more to an AmigaOS4 version of Odyssey performing as well as the MorphOS version than just this port.
For example, what is the current status of development for video h/w acceleration and MUI-MPlayer/ffmpeg for AmigaOS4 at this juncture? Won't this play a big part as well?

I'm pretty sure that's just a 'lost in translation' issue, and probably meant something like 'second class citizens' - referring entirely to missing technologies rather than any slight or insult. More accurate would probably be "to untie the hands of users currently restricted to limited usage and observation of internet technologies, allowing them to actively consume, participate and interact on a more equal level with their peers".
It's been a while since I used a browser on OS4 (iBrowse days, can't remember if RA-OWB had come out back then ) so I can't personally gauge the gap between the current OS4 browsers and Odyssey.
Youtube aside, I personally love and make use of: - per URL settings (allowing for different default options on different domains); - hotlinks (especially supporting folders-as-hotlinks to allow drop-downs in the UI); - I now have flash enabled by default, and disabled as required. The updated plugin/OWB internals introduced with 1.20 provides much better stability than the old one; - Contextual menus/mime-actions (which can be broken out to scripts easily for even further simple AmigaDOS-level configurability for the AREXX-illiterate like me )
The whole browser is just really well thought-out and developed, and Fab is always happy to discuss any problems/improvements. Plus it's updated to the latest webkit pretty often, which gives essentially a bleeding edge browser on Amiga platforms that's been written to be easy to maintain and update to newer webkit versions.
Honestly, it's a no-brainer that's good for the whole community. As a MorphOS user, I'll probably contribute some to this bounty myself even though I already get it for free. _________________ Troll - n., A disenfranchised former potential customer who remains interested enough to stay informed and express critical opinions. opp., the vast majority who voted silently with their feet.

Its a good thing :) Fab would get the money whatever you choose, send money directly to him or the bounty but this way you help the rest of the community too. For me this browser is like ibrowse was on the classics. |
