| Anyone managed to get CD audio working? Had my card since Wednesday but cannot get CD audio to work no matter what I try :/
Presume this is the CDDA header? (documentation doesn't give a port layout)

Keen to get a review of this out today, but need to get it working first. |

| That may be an output. Why I need the I/O setup to see how it hooks up to a sound card. |

Actually it wouldn't be that bad. Software can read/write CIA serial data per byte. So can still do 8-bits/byte at a time. The CIA then takes the data in the buffer and sends/receives it serially. |
Hmmm, that's fine for the serial buffer, but for the MAS player the serial transmission is over one of the parallel pins, which are masked and written to directly; there is no buffer. Perhaps there's some way of linking the serial shift register to one of the parallel pins, but I've never seen it. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X

Can it play and send 5.1 sound? (through multiple channels, btw) |
I assume that's what the optional SPDIF module is for. |

Ah, manual serial over parallel. Yes that is a cause for concern. I've seen that for hobby JTAG hacks connecting to a router. I don't know why a parallel port is abused for that purpose to slow the data stream down when a serial port is perfectly fine tuned to slow data transmission. And if the MAS is connecting to a parallel port why doesn't it just send a byte at a time? I don't understand these programmers. |

| It emulates an I2C bus since that's what the chip expects. I guess there must be some reason serial + level shifters wasn't feasible, maybe clock timings or something.
Edit: Just checked the schematic and it needs 5 output lines and 2 input lines, so I guess that's why. Last edited by Daedalus on 06-Nov-2016 at 11:53 AM.

| From what I read about I2C, which is funny as it's about as old as IEC, is that the parrallel port can be used for testing purposes for the hobbyist and is unreliable. But for a commercial application a proper interface should be used. So it seems unfortunate the MAS player using an unprofessional hack to interface with the Amiga and bit banging. It's recommended to use USB but surely an IC can be used to drive the I2C bus from parallel data.
In any case it loosk like the Megamix is a better tool for the job. Last edited by Hypex on 06-Nov-2016 at 02:12 PM.

| Interesting :)
Might consider one for my desktop 1200 if the price is right.

So you can play compressed music without any noticable CPU load.
However streaming this music via clockport takes some CPU cycles, especially as the stream has to be sent byte at a time so it takes 4 times more CPU instructions than storing it in RAM. Unklie Paula, this card is not DMA driven (at least when connected to clockport). |
I used to have a Prelude1200 card connected to the clockport and playing 44.1kHz (raw) music was no real problem, so streaming compressed music should really not be any problem. 5-10 times less traffic. _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft.
