| It seems the majority of Chris' problems with Elbox started with their Anti Piracy measures.
IIRC Elbox first denied there were any, then said 'actually there are'. Chris didn't like this and the code that was used so put code in Posiedon that if it detected Elbox's anti piracy measures, would stop Poseidon from working.
Now I can understand Chris being concerned about the measures, but his reaction and subsequent actions have been way over the top. I have had a mediator for a couple of years and have not had any problems with their anti piracy code doing things it shouldn't.
Now all that doesn't justify the cracking of his software, but when users lose out because of a developer overeacting, some take matters into their own hands, as can clearly been seen here!

| rassillion:i agree , and btw i have been a mediator user for a couple of years aswell and i never have had any problems with their sw etc or hw , but thats maybe because i bothered to REGISTER it...
anyway anyone surely should remeber all the mess elbox and others spewed at us when the copy protection issues was out of the box, people all of a sudden claiming their systems died etc, i might have been lucky, but i still think it was a hype!
nonthless this must be very sad for the developer and by no means this crack should be put where the sun never shine and the author. _________________ See my blog and collection website! . https://www.blog.amigaguru.com

Firstly, under no circumstances would I ever condone the piracy of software and I have no sympathy for anyone caught cracking software, so whoever is responsible for cracking Posiedon really should take a long, hard look at himself and his activities - they are NOT appreciated.
That said, I do understand WHY Posiedon was cracked, even if I do not condone it. I have kept myself quite well informed regarding the Chris/Elbox situation and I have to say that while Chris has produced an excellent piece of software with Poseidon and is obviously a competant programmer, he lacks a business sense and I feel he has been unreasonable in negotiations with Elbox. |

| DaveP:
Some people mention "conspiracy theory" as though if you have one, you're automatically a nutcase. My point on that issue was that conspiracies do in fact happen. Just because someone presents what looks like a conspiracy theory doesn't mean they're nuts. They might actually be right.
All we know is that things have been stated by the participants. There are three things to realize there: (1) That just because someone online says it doesn't make it a fact. (2) Just because it does not get mentioned by those people doesn't mean that it is not a fact. (3) That the converse of the previous two points is also true.
In other words, what we think we know is usually a great deal more than what we actually know. _________________ Life without the LORD is like a soap bubble without the soap. Without Him, you are nothing.

| Right right, it could have been "ANYBODY" in Poland...give me a break - I'm not saying Elbox (or any of their lackeys) did it, but I also don't think Chris is out of line with his reasoning. We'll probably never know who 'for sure' did it, but cut the guy some slack people, FFS his software's just been cracked.
-edit-
BTW I think Billsey makes some good points about this.. |

| @D,
Oh I completely understand - if MY software had been cracked I'd be furious as I'm sure he is. And quite rightly too, as I said I do not personally welcome the cracking of Poseidon.
But if you read the negotiations between Chris and Elbox... well I can't help feeling he was not particularly co-operative with them, from a business point of view.
When the subject of licensing came up, Chris said to Elbox that he would never make enough money back from licensing and didn't care for it. Infact, he also said that he wasn't making Posiedon for the money, but rather for the love of it. Now he's cutting Elbox lose because they haven't paid him a license fee??
No License fee was ever mentioned during the negotiations, and besides that the work done on the Spider drivers for Poseidon were carried out BY Elbox!
I understand some of Chris's arguments, sure, and again I do appreciate that he has spent a LOT of time on ensuring Posiedon's success - he's done a marvellous job too. But this whole cutting Elbox loose after all the development time and money has already been spent is a VERY bad thing to do. It jepordises future development on the Amiga platform, and irritataes Amiga users who are effected by this situation.
I think it was a bad decision, thats all Im trying to get at. |

| @all
I think we all agree that Chris H did not deserve to have his software cracked.
What I can't understand is the way he cut himself off from potential customers by stopping support for Elbox products.
I have a theory that it may have been smething to do with the competition between Elbox and EB3 as much as anything else.
So now you can only get Posiedon with either an EB3 product or MorphOS

| I can't speak particularly for Chris, but for some people, morality is more important than finances. If this is the case with Chris, and he views the problem with Elbox as a problem of morality, then I think his actions are perfectly understandable. Of course, this is because I understand that mindset?that there are things more important than money. _________________ Life without the LORD is like a soap bubble without the soap.
