Hardware News   Hardware News : New PowerC Products for the Amiga 1200
   posted by Mikey_C on 23-Dec-2004 18:02:18 (22075 reads)
ACK Software Controls, Inc. is pleased to announce two new products for the Amiga 1200. The first product is a Freescale 8245 based CPU card clocked at 400 MHz.

The card will have a SODIMM slot for memory expansion and also includes a Silicon Images 680 IDE controller and a Radeon Mobility graphics chip. This CPU card will fit in standard A1200 cases, but a towered system is recommended.

The second product is a modular busboard and CPU combination for use with towered A1200 machines. The bus board features an AGP 1X slot and three PCI slots. Additional features of the busboard include two DDR DIMM slots for memory expansion, a Silicon Images 680 IDE controller, onboard USB and ethernet. The CPU card will initially be a 750CXe product, but other CPUs will be available.

Both products will ship with an OEM version ofOS4 and contain a version of U-Boot as the firmware. Products are presently in prototype form running Linux and will be available in Q1 2005.

Additional information will follow in the new year.

Sincerely,

Adam Kowalczyk

ACK Software Controls, Inc.

Hmm - could this run standalone, totally independent of the A1200?

If you need any test machines, let me know. Only thing is, I'm a good 300 miles the other side of NYC from your neighborhood, and I'm not so sure the RBM Frankentower will travel too well. Oh well, nevermind.

That's what I was pondering. It's basicaly a motherboard with a connector for the A1200. Have to hack power to it. I'm looking forward to more info on this. Just when I was pondering the future of my A1200 in storage. hmmm.

This is what I have been asking for for years. You could get all kinds of upgrades for the desktop A1200 except a graphics upgrade. This has caught my imagination . When and how much?

What about renaming it to "... Hardware ..." ?

The only "problem" I can think of, releasing hardware for old Amigas, is that there are less 1200/3000/4000 mobos than before. Ths hardware being old, there is a possibility that it dies. I would prefer to buy a stand alone product...

@Bobsonsirjonny

Well, it should be possible to build an I/O card for the 400Mhz card that only delivers power connectors, network, keyboard, mouseports and a floppy port to the outside world. Worlds smallest amiga?

Will it run AOS3.9 (in 68k emulation) or only AOS4 ?
Can they use AOS3.9 and WarpUP SW ?
Can PPC be disabled ?
If 68k of the A1200 is used (when PPC disabled), will those 68k apps have access to IDE, radeon, etc...?
Does the bigger have megarray connector?

(the bigger sound similar to AmigaOne1200)

OS4 would need access to the roms to work, so you wouldn't be able to do much with the board by itself.

OS 4 loads kickstart off hard disk - there is no need for ROM - it bypasses the ROM. This board also contains uboot on it. So I dont see this as being a problem.

Good to hear. Alternatives are always welcome. Now how about
a stand-alone PPC board like µA1, the next ting ?

Merry Christmas everybody !

Wow, I want one of these, I have a plain A1200 hear that IO wanted to stick a BPPC in for OS4 but they're waay too expensive. If this is as cheap as the $160 KuruBox or $240 KuruBox HG (IIRC it uses the same chip) then I will deffinartly get one

Now if this new board had a scandoubler built in....... The fact that it openly supports OS 4 seems to be a much better proposition that the Dragon.

Nice Chrissie present to the Amiga Community. If it all comes to fruition, those A1200s floating around will go like hot cakes!

Will it dual boot, so you could run Classic (say 3.9) off the A1200 side, then reboot into the OS 4 part of the machine?

I don't suppose there's any chance we'd ever see an A2000 version? (or 500 version for that matter...)?

Nice to see another vendor taking a chance on our little platform again. Great to see OS4 already licensed and ready to go. That's the way it should be done IMHO. The rebirth has begun!
