Draggable screens of course. Not a big problem though. After all we had infinite credits ^_^ |

| Cool
I quite miss this feature, I always used to use it in preference to flipping between screens. The result would be that most of my screens would be dragged right to the bottom of the (physical) screen and I could no longer find them.
Oh, and the latest MPlayer gives a recoverable alert before it starts to play this file. _________________ "Miracles we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer" - AJS on Hyperion Avatar is Tabitha by Eric W Schwartz

Anyone know how this is done? Screens of different resolutions filling the area don't seem to have been implemented, so presumably this isn't using OpenGL like Quartz does for effects on MacOS. While the A1 has the horsepower to blit the whole screen to "fake" the drag, the thing stopping this working fully, as I understand it, has been interacting with the mouse with the other screens. Presumably the new intution can "pass through" mouse events to other screens, or something like that? |
AOS Intuition could always do that "mouse event pass through thing". It was necessary for OCS/ECS/AGA screen dragging, too. So it's unlikely they needed to do any big change to that code.
Implementing screen dragging on gfx cards is really pretty easy. Since it's been said to be a new Intuition feature (classic screen dragging was really more of a graphics thing, IMO, as the code magic happened there. viewport/copper stuff and so) it's quite likely that of the several possible ways to implement screen dragging what they do is, that when some screen is dragged down (multiple screens visible) a new ~"virtual" screen gets visible which in regular intervals (25 FPS, 50 FPS, whatever) gets "refreshed" by blitting the real visible screen's bitmaps into it. Very easy thing. Gfx cards can do hw blits really fast, so while this does slow down things a bit, it's probably still very usable method.
There are other possible ways to implement screen dragging on gfx cards. Which do not even have any slow down at all when multiple screens are visible. Like by adding layering/cilpping support (simpler one than layers.library, as only vertical overlaps happen) to graphics.library/gfx driver bitmaps. Then part of the screen bitmaps data can be in visible gfx card framebuffer, and other part can be elsewhere (offscreen VRAM, RAM) == ~screen bitmaps are window like. This is a bit more difficult to do and apart from the advantage to not slow down things when rendering into screen happens, there's the disadvantage that you break things which render directly into screen bitmap (LockBitMap, DoCDrawMethodTagList)
Also things like HAM modes or attached screens are not really all that difficult to implement on gfx cards either. If you get told otherwise it's just because of lazyiness/missing motivation of the coders. |

| OS4 is looking really, really good. Its slick looks and fantastic speed really do emphasis what a major product this is. The closer OS4's release date gets - the more I want it. Last edited by -Sam- on 21-Aug-2005 at 10:38 PM.

| Anyone want an MPEG-4 version?
Quicktime had no trouble playing this. Considering there are sooo many formats of AVI to begin with, and more than enough pc users to mangle a file in new and interesting ways... |

| Nice !
I guessed what it was from the "Do you remember a feature lost for ages" I imediately thought "Screen Dragging", then the demo started "FCUK !" (*) it IS screen dragging.
Amiga is BACK, kicking ass and chewing bubblegum
Now if that does not call for a dancing banana, then I dunno what does !
Nice work
(*) or was it Marks & Spencer, or George, I know it was the name of a clothing company, No, it was definately FCUK |

I hope you're not suggesting Amiga OS is or should be an impaired OS for the sake of it*... BTW Windows3.x drags up/down left/right!?

haha many thanks but I'm affraid this won't make the video better, my videos are transfered from memory stick pro and the firewire camera certainly don't have better video capture (THE real problem) in a such usage Last edited by Crisot on 21-Aug-2005 at 11:25 PM.

It can actually drag left/right as well, like the old AGA, when the screen behind is smaller than the viewport. _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail

| @Toaks: Not being costumizable enough makes it impaired, and on porpose... I just think users should be the ones to decide (dictate it), and not one user in behalf of others.. Not having it by default is quite another thing though... IMO
BTW, I didn't knowed that Windows3.1 grasped the concept of screens! Last edited by pixie on 22-Aug-2005 at 12:08 AM.
