So does it output at 20 bit of resolution? Hey, it's even better than my Soundblaster PCI 128, which is limited to 16 bit only :P

IMHO it still outputs 16bit sound. The Sigma Delta ADCs are working with 20 bits, to get a better resolution, but I'm not a SD ADC specialist. (In other words, the SD ADC just interpolates the data a little bit, to lower noise on the output.) Last edited by Geri on 25-Oct-2005 at 11:24 PM.

Nice that DaveAE fixed the problem. Some people are for sure happy :)

If it is not soldered on the motherboard, then you don't have it. The output of pciscan just shows the VIA AC97 controller, which interfaces the AC97 codec (AFAIK). _________________ A1SE: G3@600MHz, 2GB, 1GBit network card A1XE: G4@933MHz, 2GB, refitted AC'97 codec microA1: G3@800MHz, 1GB

Brilliant
Thank you, but HOW did you do it? Did you find new registers, special init. sequence code???
Most interesting.
And thank you again.

| First, i'd like to congratulate for making it work. (And i'm serious about that, no irony!) About the whole A1XE sound issues over the years, i'd like not to comment, because it's already beyond pathetic... But it's finally good to know that it actually works. _________________ MorphOS, classic Amiga, demoscene, and stuff "When a bridge is not enough, build a Viaduct!" Mine doesn't. It doesn't even have the outputs on the back plate. However, I'm glad a looked inside my A1. I found several dead spiders. I suppose when they discovered I wasn't running windows, they lost all purpose of existence and just dried up! To bad my XPbox doesn't have the same good fortune. |

IIRC the SE was supposed to have audio on an AMR riser card which never materialized.
Olegil designed and made one but there wasn't enough interest to get it produced as it cost about the same as a PCI audio card.
IIRC, and I may not as it was a long time ago. |

| Hi,
Ole-Egil built an AMR card but just like the XE, it didn't work (for the same reason). It would probably work now though.

| Now, I'd be wondering for those who don't have the chip, can that just be added to the board if one can be obtained?
Will have to look at my board later and see if I have the chip. Mine is probably not one of the earlier batches, though it did originally have the May 2003 UBoot in it. I bought it from Software Hut in December 2003. _________________ This posting, in it's entirety, is the opinion and/or statement of the author and does not reflect the views and/or position of this site.

Nice to see this working. When I get home this weekend I'll have to give it a try!
@thread
About soldering this chip onto boards that don't have it!
C'mon people get serious. Would you solder a chip onto a pc board that doesn't have sound? Is it worth the chance of frying something else?
Most of us couldn't care less that the onboard sound didn't work when we bought the board (although many made an issue of the principle of the thing) and if you didn't have the chip from the beginning then you can't ever have expected it to work.
This is nice for those that have the chip AND might have some use for it. Personally I have a juli@ which is far better for my purposes but if I ever run out of pci slots who knows..
I think it would be a shame if peple started another wave of frying their boards by trying to solder soundchips onto them.
Juust an idea.

Heh! Not that hard really. Well for me at least. I can put one of those on with a pencil-tip soldering iron. Used to have to do that every other day at one of my previous jobs.
Now, I'm not so sure my hands are as steady as they used to be though, so it will probably be a bit tougher than it used to be.
BTW, I verified my board does not have the chip but it does appear to have all the other parts around it that are connected to it (capacitors, resistors, etc), with the exception of one or two resistors (maybe). I would be willing to give this a go if someone can post their Sigmatel chip part number in here. If I can get one, I'll solder it up and see if it works. _________________ This posting, in it's entirety, is the opinion and/or statement of the author and does not reflect the views and/or position of this site.

It's quite awkward to read the number of the IC, I had to remove my Radeon and watch it closely to be able to read the tiny letters. This is the chip's code:
SIGMATEL STAC9752T CB2U008 0247
and the chip is labeled U43 on the motherboard. |
OK, here's what I found on this: STAC9752 datasheet (covers STAC9752T)
I found lots of references to this chip in a Google search, but most of them had to do with drivers and such (like for ALSA in Linux for example). I found a few places that sell parts that list the number on pages that are just massive listings of part numbers. No descriptions or prices listed. Sigmatel also does not have a purchase link on their page that I could find.
May be a tad difficult getting one of these chips.
And I suppose I should have read through the rest of the posts before putting this one up. Oh well. Last edited by DWolfman on 26-Oct-2005 at 02:27 AM.

Well, in my case I have the skills to fix the board myself. Just like I now know how to fix the DMA issue, but have held off for a few reasons (primarily that they might still figure out how to properly configure things and the workaround may not be needed). I suppose the A1 XE wasn't as bad of a board as most of us initially thought. Mine's out of warranty by now (coming up on 2 years old, and the US doesn't have any kind of mandatory warranty periods like some other countries have), so I can do anything I want to with it.
Thing is it is still Eyetech that needs to make good on this. Regardless of the fact that it really is just a driver issue, they still sold a board that for all intents and purposes has a "broken" on-board sound setup. In my case since they basically gave up on fixing it, I really do have a broken one because I don't have the chip on the board.
Anyway, enough venting. I'd just be glad to free up one more slot in my A1, because sometime in the future I may want to add a bunch of hard drives to my system where I'll need some additional controllers plugged in. Eventually, I want to get some Serial ATA drives to go in it. _________________ This posting, in it's entirety, is the opinion and/or statement of the author and does not reflect the views and/or position of this site.
