Cheers for the info. I'd have to say that I'm pretty astute with these things but that's a new one to me.

If I was faced with that situation I would ask for the number of the person calling so that I can call them back, IF they give me their number, contact a REAL number (Found on statements etc...) & ask that the number be confirmed & that I be put through to that person/department. If the number is a fake, I'll soon find out from the real company.

I don't understand how people can be trapped by any such email!

First a bank or any other money related system (VISA, ebay etc)
will NEVER ask any confidental infos such as PIN CODES, PASSWORDS, 3 ditits on the back of your card etc. via email or phone!
Here in the EU is simply illegal (Bank secret)! So any such email is just SPAM. Point!
Even if you call the bank yourself and you just want to get the account status you won't get an answer but are requested to appear personnally at the bank!

If something is wrong with your card and the bank or money institue knows it your card will simply be unfunctional and your will ne notified via registreed snailmail that this is the case! POINT.
The only time you have to deal on the phone for any credit card, is the person you call when you have lost your credit card! Again you don't need to tell any code. Just your Credit card number which isn't secret at all!

OTOH you will never be asked your PASSWORD or PINCODE!
Why? These are coded they can't be coded back and not the bank nor ebay or whoever can tell you your password/code. If you don't remember it you can get another one, but for that you must visit the bank in person and fill out a special form. After that (several days) you will be send via registered snail mail a new computer generated code, which nobday knows!!

My providers already do filter these SPAM emals very good. And those who slip through are killed by my email progs and the rest (5-10) are deleted by myself!

I don't even read such emails My email progs also checks the size of attachements, it they are too small the're just deleted automatically, the same goes for people I don't know or subjects I know I will never get an email, because my banks don't know none of my email addresses!

So I'm really shocked that so many people here in the forum, do seem to believe these SPAM emails!

To resume: No trusted system will ever ask for a PIN code or Password.
No one anywhere will give you something for free, and most certainly NO money!
FREE = GRATIS simply does not exist! Someone always has to pay and with these emails it's mostly the receiver!

Incorrect, the CVV can well be asked by retailers and they DO ask for it, it's the security code,
it's not a personal identification number.

Once I almost fell victim of a paypal spoof. It all went down very well, 'till I reached a line string gadget
with the PIN number title. They are freaking idiots, there are a lot of things one can do WITHOUT the PIN number, had they not asked for it I'd be a victim, since it was a PERFECT mirror of the paypal site.

That's true. But it's the bank system behind the dealers order system that asks for the CVV. These systems are always SSL or https encoded.
CVV is only asked on internet online order but never on the phone.
I would never trust an order via phone, that way you don't have any proof (order form, fax, bill...).
The connected bank system immediately checks with your card provider computer if your card is ok.

Here in Luxembourg (number one worldwide with bank transfers) you can't even have a different delivery address as the one of the card holder. So even if someone can order online with your card infos, the items will all the same be delivered to the card holders address. This even works in foreign countries, my girlfriend once ordered a GPS from USA to be delivered to my address, which didn't work so the GPS had to be delivered to her house (as that was the address saved at VISA).

If osmething goes wrong you're in trouble very fast.
At least here in Luxembourg. A friend of me once bought a TV and paid with cheque. When he arrived at home 2 hours laters, he was arrested. He had done nothing wrong and the cheque account was ok.
But he had paid with his wife cheque and not his own! (different names)
It took him 1 week of administartional paperwork to get the situation cleared with the bank, shop and police!

The problem I see with such things is phishing! In the meantime to done very cleverly. But again you must first open an email which redirects your browser to a phishing site!

I will never get in trouble with credit cards, I don't use or have one! Here I'm once on par with manager/bankers: the CEO of Barclay UK said in an interview 2 years ago: "I would never use a Barclay (or any other credit card)
and I insist that my sons don't use one either! Credit cards are way too much taxes!!"

I recently oredered some motorsport wishbones for my escort and company asked for my 3 digit code via the telephone. I was happy to do so though because I'd bought products from them before, in fact they'd sent the wrong bushes one time and gave me the correct ones free of charge.

They're going on saturday morning, so my car should handle even more tighter than before.

I also recently received two Emails, one from Paypal, One from Ebay to my Hotmail Account (within about one week).
Both were basically saying that there were a problem with my account and unless I update my Security Details, my accounts will be suspended.
Both Emails looks IDENTICAL to previous Emails received from Paypal or Ebay.

But because there were sent to my Hotmail Account (I am checking thisaccount less than once a week generally), I saw those emails about ONE week after they arrived.
So I click on the link (A button "Respond" or somethink like that), which took me to a "Page not Found"... And my Ebay account is still working (though I haven't bought anything for over 3 Months). IMO,, this was another SCAM !

If you check where that link goes to it's would have been something like www.234eBayy.com the screen would look identical to the eBay one, and if they've really got their act together will test to see if you've entered the correct Usneame/code by being able to log onto eBay, and then forward you to the correct eBay site, all nicely logged on once they skimmed the info off you...

Yep, that one is a scam too. I get em all the time, and sometimes from banks that I don't even have an account with. That particular scam is called Phishing. As you see from that link, they are out to steal your identity.

Have I understood this correctly: "419" scammers are actually REGISTERING here to send PMs specifically to aw.net members? I've never heard of this modus operandi before.

Before I left for work this morning I e-mailed my scammer asking if he was still interested in buying my Blizzard surround sound system. I doubt he'll know any better somehow.

I only have a credit card for absolute emergencies... I've only used it twice so far and I've already had
trouble with it... My account got locked for security purposes, right after last year's Big Bash, since
an ATM was hacked and cloned it and I realised that when I tried to pay at the super market, using my
debit card as always. Had to use the credit card instead and... Apparently, when they'd given me this
card, they'd automatically set up direct debit to my step account... I didn't know about it and paid at
the counter. I migrated to a student account since then and so the step account was empty... The
credit card statements I get are always **EXTREMELY** late and as such I paid at the counter...
Not knowing the exact amount, since I had no statement, I paid 5 pounds less... They tried to debit
the money from my empty account and of course, it bounced... giving me an administrative fine of
38 pounds... They tried again, giving me another 38 pounds... Of course, no correspondence was
made from their side, to let me know that something's wrong. I realised it when I received my account
statement to see it 90 pounds overdrawn! Only after that did I receive the credit card statement...
They do their BEST to charge people. Thankfully, I got a refund, after explaining the situation to the
bank, and also left some cash in that account, just in case...
