hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : DiscreetFX submits proposal to acquire Amiga Inc. in the next 12 months
   posted by DiscreetFX on 22-Oct-2006 5:26:59 (18541 reads)
Members of DiscreetFX sent a formel proposal to Amiga Inc. requesting formal validation of the companies value. We are hard at work finishing up our Super Size Me like movie about Trans Fat but the plan is to secure funding to purchase Amiga Inc. and all of it’s IP in the next year. That is our next project after completing the film. It has been on the To-Do list for some time.

This of course depends on if Amiga Inc. wants to sell themselves in the next year and if an agreed upon price can be negotiated. DiscreetFX believes there is tremendous value in the Amiga brand and Amiga OS 4.0. The CEO of DiscreetFX stated “Even though we primarly develop our visual effects software on NewTek video editing solutions for Windows and solutions on Mac OS X the Amiga has always held a special place in my heart since I developed my first product on it. I want to help bring the Amiga back to it’s former glory in new IT markets”. If an agreement can be reached between Amiga Inc. and DiscreetFX the return of Amiga will be amazing.

Best regards

DiscreetFX Team

Someone in control that finally does what we want, I can dig that. At least it can't get any worse.

Sounds like a terrorist group. CNN / Washington: 64 members of DiscreetFX were arrested on attempts of aquiring Amiga Inc.

> It has been on the To-Do list for some time.

I suppose after that comes world peace?

> former proposal

Formal proposal?

> it’s formal glory

Its former glory?

Interesting announcement, but wouldn't it have been better not to announce this until you actually managed to buy Amiga?

My sentiment also. To many Amiga news items are announced pre-pre alpha and later turn to dust. This is interesting news and will definitly span many a thread for the next 3 years, even if it's unsucessful.

If Amiga Inc. is privately held, they can just ignore DiscreetFX's request can't they?

BTW, I think now that OS4 is nearly complete, Amiga Inc. can claim it's potentially worth many millions. What ever DiscreetFX offers, AInc. can just say.... "nope, it's worth more than that." Unless AInc. is truley ready to sell.

[conspiracy hat on]

I think the DiscreetFX guys know more than they're letting on. Normally, a company that has recently announced acquiring another one is in the middle of a growth cycle and extremely unlikely to want to sell their business to another company (unless it's a startup looking to get bought by Google ) Yet here we have DiscreetFX asking Amiga Inc to do exactly that, and making it publically known on their website; I must admit that I was thinking that DiscreetFX were pulling a bbrv (doesn't "we offered him a free plane ticket to come discuss the sale" sound a lot like "we offered him a free plane ticket to come pick up the hardware docs"?) but then they made it an official company statement, so it looks like they're actually serious. Couple this with the recent news about Garry Hare not pulling in as much funding as Amiga Inc needed (was the Indian company bought using VC money or business income?) and the suspicious timing of Bill McEwen's son getting hit during a game so he could not talk at amiwest (not saying it's not true, but it's such a good coincidence...)

My take on this? Amiga Inc is on a collision course with mother earth and someone tipped DiscreetFX off. My suspicions will be confirmed if bbrv shows up here as well, offering olive branches by the bushel.

[conspiracy hat off]

Amiga Inc will definately want to keep the Amiga name. So some sort of arrangement will have to come about so both DiscreetFX and Amiga Inc can continue to use the Amiga brand name on whatever products they want. I dont even know if that will work.

Of course, it had to eventually fall into the hands of someone who is as passionate about AmigaOS as the users its self. This wont mean a lot in the short term, but, it may lead to more hardware and software down the line. Especialy seeing as DiscreteFX have shown, they can stay alive.

I just came home after two soccer games (on TV) and i'm still eating my (small) dinner. I connected to the net and came right to AmigaWorld to see what's new and i see this.

Big cojones DiscreetFX!

I'm not hoping for anything. Only time will tell how it turns out, as with everything but still... i wasn't expecting this. Heck, i guess nobody was!

Firstly - AInc. will want a fortune for their er.. 'IP'.

Secondly - Probably not such a bright idea telling everyone about it and also stating that you think it has 'tremendous value' as now - they're going to want more.

Buying AInc. hinges on you getting them to realise that all they are going to do is loose more and more money and that anything for the brand is better than nothing.

You should really have that meeting with AInc. before you go any further in making your plans public as you may well find it (I would be surprised if it hasn't already) seriously jeopardises any future in the deal.

This is definitely unprofessional.
I wonder why you had to go public... the only reasons I can see (not without finding some of them less than credible - I'm just listing all the possibilities that come to mind) are:
1. you want to see how the community reacts (for a few reasons);
2. you want to pressure AInc through the community;
3. you want the community's appreciation (for a few reasons);
4. you want to follow the AmigaLand business fashion;
and none of them can justify the lack of delicacy (actually, it only makes it worse).
I hope there is a better reason, although I honestly doubt business can't be done in a better way.

I see that we are on the same wave length. Certainly is convenient.

Could it be that its already a done deal unofficialy and they are now starting the motions to make it all official and legal. if Amiga inc need money to fund their core business that is amiga anywhere then they could sell all the other IP (the name and OS) to another company and maybe licence the Amiga name for their product.

What would a new DiscreetFX owned Amiga Inc. logo look like?

:)
