I hope minimig can accept 4GB or bigger! _________________ www.loriano.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

I think network isn't needed but I wonder how many old 9-pin joysticks are out there. wouldn't it be cool if one could plug one of those new competitionUSB-joystick in there? |

Alright, but how can you do without an 68k Quad-Core, HDMI-support and Bluetooth? _________________ This signature is in the middle of a much needed facelift!

| Very nice, prebuilt minimigs has been requested by many people for many months.
I however, am gonna follow Jens Schönfeld's recommendation and wait for "the competition" instead; the Clone-A seems to be a better product in every single aspect. There was a very interesting video recording (can't find that video now?) from some seminar where Jens talked for a very long time about his Clone-A project, how it will have real floppy drive emulation, built in scandoubler, etc. Eventually the FPGA image will even be "converted" to true silicon, like the "C64 in a joystick" was a derivate from the "Commodore One". That would really be something!
Quote:
Clone-A is making extremely good progress, but I have decided to make it a real product, not a hobby-thing like Minimig. It'll be worth the wait and it'll be worth the money. More modes, more interfaces, more data sources.
Public demonstration is currently not planned. I'll do that after the whole deal of product safety, CE/FCC testing and all that stuff has been finished. Meanwhile, don't spend your money on inferior products
Jens Schönfeld | Quote:
Merging Minimig and Clone-A is actually planned. I have an agreement with Dennis that I'll open up all the information necessary to port Minimig to the Clone-A hardware. That way people can see the difference between the two implementations.
I stand by my word, all that info will be open to the public.

| If a company gets serious enough they can have the FPGA and Verlog logic gates, synthesized into pure silicons chip / s. Smaller and probably faster. Cheaper perhaps also buy about 25-50%.
Any serious mass producer should then include a USB port.
An advanced version would include a PCI slot or similar for PPC, but I belive having a MiniMig on PCI is far better option for SAM 440PPC users so they can potentially have Amiga OS 4 classic running on the machine. Although a straight port is more likely to appear first.
With USB their would be no need for Network cards or slots.
MMC slot: some clever designer could use the interface to create the following a) USB adapter - once you have a USB port plug in a USB hub and you have a large number of devices, wireless, keyboard, joysticks, hard drives etc. b) MMC specific to SD adapter c) Pure MMC devices
I want to see some clever chaps put a cheap plastic case design together and perhaps get it manufactured. _________________ Quote:

No, they can't. Minimig is pure 68k, so there is no way in hell to run OS4 on it.
I also don't see any reason to implement Minimig as a PCI-card for the few existing SAM440 owners. And for anyone with a x86-PC it would make even less sense, since you always have access to the near-perfect Winuae. Besides, PCI is outdated.Last edited by polka. on 30-Dec-2007 at 03:31 PM.

No, no, no, the aim with this is to achieve a Amiga 500 computer, not to build a new platform. Focus is A500 compatibility, hence the HW specs *are written in stone* to be the same as the Amiga 500. You can't start adding this and that, it would break the compatibility goals. |

It's swings and roundabouts.
Minimig may prove to be more versatile in the long run. The FPGA can be reprogrammed to simulate sifferent hardware, it shouldn't be too big a step to run it as a Genesis or NeoGeo or add AGA. It'll be interesting to see what can be home brewed.
The production version Clone A will not have an FPGA so it will remain as it was shipped. It will be 100% accurate in it's emulation of an A500 with OCS and should be a more complete product when it ships, hopefully cheaper too.

This is what Jens is doing with Clone.

I think it would be a lot of work to fool the OS4 classic into thinking the Sam440 with an A500 on a PCI card was a classic Amiga. |

| Its a small modification. I dedicated USB port would require modification. But not that much. This is PCB 1.1 so PCB 1.2 could include USB 2.0 support.
Compatibility won't be broken! It can be achieved.
Besides the MMC to USB adaptor could be the real deal anyway but why do all that work when you can just add a USB port and eliminate any other unecssory ports.
Its a better choice... WinUAE uses USB devices so I don't see any compatibility issues there. Even better with a USB port and USB hub you can have
1) Printer 2) Wireless Wifi USB Stick - or USB - 2 - USB TCP/IP Networking and Data Transfer 3) USB Mass Storage - Keys, CDROM, DVD, HardDisks, Blue Ray etc.. 4) Other USB devices and hacks
Simply its the evolutionary and logical next step. _________________ Quote:

| I think the minimig should stay what it is; an A500 reproduction full stop. It can run OS1.3 and most of the Amiga games and programs archive, no more no less.
Any other attempt to make it something else would not be cost effective and all that energy, money and time would be better spent on a new, powerful generation PPC Amiga to accept OS4.
The next step for the minimig should be the minimig 1200 able to run AGA stuff and MAYBE be backward compatible.

Thanks!
@meet.mrnrg
Again, the main goal is a device that is 100% Amiga 500 compatible, so that all those OS1.3 games and demos that *bangs directly* on the hardware (which a vast majority of them do) would run and work to a 100% degree. If you start adding things, changing the addresses, etc, it would no longer be an A500 compatible device. Jens Schönfelt did answer questions about upgraded HW and added features a few times in the video above; people wondered whether it would be possible to increase chipmem to x MB, "fat" this chip up, "fat" that chip up, etc. His answer was that, no this is impossible, the goal is not to make a new platform, the goal is to create an Amiga 500 compatible device and if you start adding/changing the specs, it would not be compatible, hence it would be a mission failure and the device would have lost its purpose. |

| I am confident that Clone-A will be a nice product, but what else can Jens do at the moment than to tell people that it will be much a much nicer product than Minimig?
I am sure Clone-A is worth the wait, but I assume I can have the same fun with Minimig already. If not, I can always sell it when Clone-A becomes available. _________________ This signature is in the middle of a much needed facelift!
