Software News   Software News : Introducing MultiViewer & MultiViewerNG

Introducing MultiViewer & MultiViewerNG
The ultimate Classic & Next-Generation AmigaOS file viewer
Cardiff 3rd June 2015

A-EON Technology Ltd is pleased announce the imminent release of MultiViewer and MultiViewerNG, its advanced file viewer utility for Classic and Next-Generation AmigaOS systems.

As part of our ongoing commitment to developing quality software content for Classic and Next-Generation AmigaOS systems we contracted freelance AmigaOS developer Andy Broad and set him the challenge of creating the ultimate AmigaOS file viewer utility. We gave him outline specifications and the freedom to build the programme from the ground-up. Our only stipulation were that the software must integrate with our other A-EON Technology applications such as Personal Paint & ImageFX and to make sure that, wherever possible, the Classic version had most of the features of Next-Generation version.

We are please to report that Andy has exceeded all of our expectations and the result is MultiViewer a flexible application for viewing any type of file supported by the datatypes system. Two versions are being released: MultiViewer for the Classic AmigaOS and MultiViewerNG for the latest AmigaOS 4.1 systems.

Both of these programs provide the AmigaOS with many additional features, such as a tool bar, image scaling, slideshow mode together with file and image editing hotlinks to programs such as NotePad ,Personal Paint, etc. Both versions of MultiViewer may be run from the Workbench or from the shell. The programs behaviour is controlled by a range of options which may be defined as Tooltypes or command line switches. Default settings are loaded from the tooltypes in the main programs icon. A powerful ARexx interface and Scripting menu provides even more options. The default settings can be modified by the tooltypes in the projects icon or the switches and options provided on the command line. Additional tooltypes allow the defining of external editors and scripts which may be executed from a custom script menu. Once MultiViewer is running, additional features may be controlled via the tool bar, menu and keyboard shortcuts and multiple files. Full Ringhio support is also included and the NG version also includes multiple Tabs and the ability to view AMIStore screenshots.

We asked Andy to comment on his six months MultiViewer development effort. "It's been an interesting challenge exploring both the potential and limitations of the datatypes system in order to bring the original concept of MultiView up to date in MultiViewer. An additional challenge was exploiting the significant advances in the AmigaOS 4 Reaction GUI system whilst providing as much functionality in the relatively limited 3.X version as possible."

MultiViewer and MultiViewerNG will be available shortly from AMIStore & Amistore.net

MultiViewer to the future

Special thanks to Mason for the icons and the beta testers PJS, Severin and others for their work on finding bugs and providing feedback.

Agreed. I have an html.datatype which I think was written by Sebastian Bauer. It would be great to display simple pages like manuals or tutorials. For such task it would not need to have all webkit features.
I still wonder why nobody updated it :-/

@cha05e90 + Elwood

Are the source codes for any of these available?

@ Andy : if I understand what happens in the video, you need a dropbox and drag all files in it so that it gets listed in Multiviewer. Is that so ? so no double click anymore ?

What I always missed in Multiview was that after you close it, it would not remind the last files I viewed so I had to always dig in the dir tree if I need to view the same file again.

@ChrisH

And? You want me to develop a datatype based on a MUI class?

No you misunderstood the video completely (well there wasn't much explanation, so hardly your fault).

The video shows MultiViewers ability to watch a directory, and signal an arexx script when it changes, this allows you to automatically display any new files in that directory. (or do anything else you might want the script to do).

Normal drag and drop works, drop on the main area to display immediatly, drop on the lister area to add to file list without replaceing the displayed object.

You could port it to Reaction then improve it if you prefer :)

This has obvious allusions to MultiView and does the same sort of thing including using the datatype system, so I have ask here, why reinvent the wheel? It looks like a MultiView replacement with a lawsuit. If the intent is to provide a better MultiView, why not just commision Andy to write an official replacement?

Because A-EON does not own OS4, and Hyperion the owner is unable to pay Andy?

Lawsuit ? It's name might be similar but it's not the same, the similarity is to indicate equivalent purpose. I'm really not sure that the plain MultiView name is trademarked, but even if not it would clearly bad form to call it the same thing.

As to reiventing the wheel. MultiViews wheel was made of wooden spokes and steel rim, MultiViewers has a pneumatic tyre and light weight alloy hub.

More seriously a significant amount of rewritting would be needed anyway as MultiViewer offers many more features than MultiView. (Important note: there is *no* OS src code in MultuViewer)

It's an A-EON conceived and commisioned project, so hyperion abilty to pay is irrelavant, I would think this combination is best in many was as Hyperions funds where available may directed to the cores devs for more in depth OS work, and AEON can direct funds to application level developers.

That was the most appropriate image in AISS, you can always replace TBIMAGES:listviewcancel with a prefered image if you want.
Ideally there would be a sysiclass image for tabs but there isn't yet...

Maybe it would be better to use image from path selected in Pref Gui Style

Prefs/Presets/Default/Common/Bitmaps/ Specific Style (from pref) / Close or SClose (don't know the difference)

Certainly not, those images are in the wrong format and can't be guaranetee to be there, those images should only be accessed via sysiclass and it's too big for a tab, being designfor the window titlebar.

Had a look at Epsilon's sneak peak. This is the first time I've seen such extensive use of
menu graphics. So this is thanks to the Final Edition, I presume?

WIll there be more programs utilising such menu graphics?

@kotler

MVerNG makes use of menuclass, which was released with Final Edition yes.

menuclass make adding imagery trivial but that is the least of it, it makes menus much much easy it lots of ways, including the ability to hide menu sections dynaically. One example in MVer is the simple Save As... menu item for general datatypes and the multiformat version for Pictures.

re:HTML Viewer and AmigaGuide improvements

Has anybody tried Stephan Ruppert's Hypertext Datatype Class? It allowed search from within AmigaGuide and primitive off-line HTML viewing as well!

@Samurai_Crow

The existence of a nearly 20-year-old datatype is quite irrelevant if the sources are not available.

@broadblues
"menuclass" ?

Is it available in the latest non-public SDK ?

Thx

@kotler
For pictures in menu, MUI do it too (look the latest zTools screenshots ;) )

menuclass is part of Final Edition you'll need to new SDK when it comes available.

I have it ofcourse (or at least a variant on it) as being a beta tester one of my jobs is testing the SDK parts of the OS.

menuclass is an exception piece of work that makies menus trivial, sooo much easier than Gadtools.

Argh, just when I'm fighting with intuition menu, an easier solution exists but is not available !

Thx for explanations Broadblues.
