No - but they won't need to - the name Minimig should be enough especially with the right marketing. I would hate to see Amiga Inc. profit from this. _________________ Sam

Ok, MiniMig 500 it is then. _________________ www.loriano.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

Setting up a network on the Minimig isn't exactly plug and play so the majority of users won't need it.
Also why mess about with a network when memory cards for transferring is so much easier? - how much is a memory card reader these days? £8? Hardly breaking the bank. _________________ Sam

| I wonder how much heat the minimig gives out...
1) A lot 2) Not enough to worry 3) Absolutely minimal amount of heat
and if it needs a metal shield like the original Amigas 500, 600 and 1200. _________________ www.loriano.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

Exactly, and plugging in a 1GB flashcard should keep you happy for a while anyway... Copying some new adfs via flashcard reader is faster than booting up to WB and starting dog-slow network transfers to 68000.
Why integrate network support when it just adds more costs but no real value?
But I guess everybody except derfs is just missing the point, lol. _________________ This signature is in the middle of a much needed facelift!

| Power Supply...
From ACube website: Power: +5VDC (approx 100mA without mouse)
Anyone found a power supply that will work with the minimig?

| aparently everyone is not getting the point im trying to make, and some then just try and be superior by showing that as they dont agree, my idea must be stupid, therefore im stupid.
i have never suggested touching the actual amiga 500 part. the minimig 'bios' could be set up with basic tcp/ip where you set the info and can then have the minimig be a share on that network. if your actual amiga is on the network, and you make adfs on your amiga, it is not too difficult to transfer it over then, instead of creating an extra step (putting it on a memory card), and if your minimig is not in the same room, then more time as you have to go to whereever it is.
i stick to my original thoughts in that not all computers come with memory card readers, and suggested a way that would be *easier* for amiga owning people to use the minimig with what they have. if you have a store of adf's for winuae again you can just copy it over.
£8 is still £8 extra, and imho it is not as easy a way as i have described. if this idea was so stupid there would not be dvd drives / recorders / modded xbox's that use the same functionality for different media situations.
also in my experience, copying files over a network is much easier than transfering via memory card/stick.
if you dont agree, fine, thats your choice, but by making jokes at my expense only shows how you dont get what im on about, and says more about you than it does me. _________________

| Doesn't the Minimig have a serial port? If so, and once the write ability to the memory card has been included in the code, you should be able to use something like Amiga Explorer (from Amiga Forever) to transfer data from a PC to the Minimig (running Workbench). _________________ AmigaOne X1000, A4000(T), A3000, A2000, A1200(T), A1200, A500, CD32, Minimig+ARM, FPGA Arcade, Chameleon64, C-One, C128, C128D, C64C, C64, VIC-20, CBM 8032, CBM4032, Efika, Ultimate64

That's fine. In my own humble opinion I would much rather just fill a memory card with adf files than have to fiddle with TCP/IP loading and ethernet cabling to a machine I am just going to plug into my telly in the front room.

And if you wanted a network port on the MiniMig it would probably cost at least that anyway.

From PC to PC yes it is but for a front room mini A500 - I'd rather just load up a memory card.

Sorry - I wasn't aware that anyone was.
That all said it is a good idea but perhaps better in a version 1.2? For now the Minimig is best off being as low cost as possible and aiming to be as uncomplicated as possible. I do see where you are coming from - you could get the Minimig to boot up and see a selection of ADF files on a network share which would be cool. _________________ Sam

That would be mind meltingly slow and I don't really see the point - just copy your stuff to the memory card. _________________ Sam

| No Ethernet, no purchase - as simple as that. If the Clone-A will feature networking capabilities, it is by far a more interesting choice. _________________ That'll Put Marzipan In Your Pie Plate, Bingo 💻 Pro-Amiga, 🌍 Pro-Globalism, 🍅 Pro-Vegan, 🛦 Pro-NATO & 🇪🇺 Pro-Joint EU Defense Intervention Initiative

If i can provide what UAE can trough kaillera it would bring an all new breath of life in old games... you could then play mano-a-mano against one friend as never before. Each one in their own tv across the net.
I think that present lots of value. _________________ Indigo 3D Lounge, my second home. The Illusion of Choice | Am*ga

| Lets be realistic. 1) ADF Kiosk anybody? Like the MP3 ones. 2) Most Amiga uses never had more than 300 floppy's let alone 21+ licensed applications or games. 3) Use your friends card reader - or we can set up a loan a ADF or loan a card reader program for the third world. 4) others...

OK it seems I misunderstood you. I thought you wanted the extra features to be part of the Amiga but what you meant was putting it outside the "amiga box"? That would be possible I guess, but it would raise the bar *considerably* and the board is already finished. It would delay the minimig possibly a year (or a few years) and it would add cost to the board, and this for features that really lies outside the scope of the project and to be honest is pretty pointless. It's not going to happen.
If you want maximum convenience you should use WinUAE. Then you get it all. Buy Amiga Forever. |

i never suggested that this version isnt very good for many people, just i want a little extra before i go for it. it is a simple thing compared to some other suggestions that have been made. if you havnt already, i suggest following the various minimig threads over on a.org, and you get an idea of where this project is going in the future. as for pointless, well i dont think so, which is why i have mentioned it.
personally i dislike using winuae for games, but again, thats my preference, and why i would like a minimig in the future.
*edit*
i also think meet.mrnrg was trying to suggest alternatives, not that he was agreeing with me. Last edited by Derfs on 31-Dec-2007 at 11:53 AM.

Did I? Versus the cost of the MiniMig, it is nothing and I have serious trouble believing that you would pay for a MiniMig AND not spend the 10 quid to get a cheap card reader. _________________

| Prod, Prod.. Is this thing on?
SD/MMC/RS-MMC USB card reader from Poundland.. thats £1, as in a single pound, as in a lot less than £8?
5 Volts at 100mA,
USB is 5 volts at 500 mA, thats 5 Times greater supply From a USB port, Or Mains USB charger socket for £1 from cash converters, or the O2 charger for mobile phones, or wind up chargers, or.. well, take your pick.

Has anyone identified a particular model that will work with the minimig?
Excuse my electric ignorance but isn't 500ma too much for a device which needs 100ma? Any chance of damaging it or does that occur only if you give it more volts? For example device needs 5 volts you give it 12v and device dies?
It must be all the Christmas drinking and eating...I am confused!
