@Z5:

What "People" really like? Ask ten people about how a GUI should look, and you will get 25 different opinions

We are very well aware that there is no way to please everyone. If you want a more fancy theme, make/get/select one. However, as has been stated before, One of the major reasons for this look was that it should be recognizable as Intuition yet leave the dusty old look behind, and I think that the designer did a very good job at that. Also, this works on an 8 bit screen, which is also an important feature.

So my question: don't anyone has any higher ambitions than to do work for the 2000 or so ppl still interested in the Amiga?

I read a similar argument by DJNick on Amiga.org and didn't understand it there either. Why do you think that an overly fancy GUI look would attact more people? I just don't grasp that.

Fact is that a lot of people left the Amiga after 2.0, so these will immediately say "hey, that's intuition, but it looks better than I remember". In other words, you tickled their interest.

The recent MorphOS test on OSNews clearly shows that you need to do MUCH more to attract outside people than just make a GUI. At least AmigaOS 4's GUI will strife to take a consistant look (which was one thing that the tester remarked).

We're going for Amigans and ex-Amigans first, yes. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

I agree Rogue. Even on non-Amiga sites where I have posted the screenshots, ex-Amigans were impressed. So much so, that one individual decided that he wants an AmigaOne.

Good work!

Well, I think it looks alot like it's legacy. Having said that, it is without a doubt the best looking AmigaOS screen ever. Just look at how crisp everything is, and those fonts look really good. The color scheme is easily recognizable as Amiga.

Overall, I like it. I would like more updated icons, but I'm sure that will happen eventually, and is absolutly not a necessity for the OS4 release (IMO).

That is not the point. I have never done anything to change any windows theme on any pc. Have a look around at your office: how many ppl change the default look? How many pc users have you seen with a different icon set?

Well for me it looks ok. Only thing I have changed on this PC is the desktop wallpaper (which funnily enough is a pic of a large boing ball! ).

Quote:
Fact is: we want to customise everything because we love our Amiga. Look outside the Amiga community, and you will see a completely different picture.

You'll probably find that most users (of PC in particular) are not knowledgable about their OS to change things if they even wanted to.

Quote:
But i rest my case. As somebody said, it seems we aren't allowed to say that we don't like it anymore...because we are Amigans.

No ofcourse you must say that you don't like it if you don't, but don't expect hyperion to applaud you for doing so.

The look of the OS is VERY subjective, I think it's ok you don't, I would rather they spent the time working on the things you don't see than wasting precious resources on designing themes that please everyone.

The OS will allow you to change the look quite easily, do the work yourself if you don't like it, just don't expect the developers to design a bucketload of themes for you.

I'd like to add my voice to those who've praised the current look. I'm not wild about the metalic texture but that's just a matter of taste and, as long as it can be easily changed to another texture, I'll be happy.

There are a couple of small bells and whistles (remembering that's all they really are!) that It'd be nice to see by default such as a tiltle bar clock and perhaps some system stats - memory usage etc but all in all, a good effort!

Well done Hyperion, I'm looking forward to seeing this for real!

I'd like to point out that, in many offices (particularly the larger ones) people don't have access to change many of their preferences if any. If you look at the set-ups these people have at home, you'll probably see a much different picture.

Why, oh why, should a good design be overly fancy? The best designs are those that look good AND are simple.

Looks good, except for that cheap brushed metal texture.

I'd rather a nice pale solid background than that texture, although a nice walnut texture would be nice as well (fitting in with a luxury desktop :) )

Still, good to see that things are 80% completed in the looks department, let's hope the last 20% is just rearranging pixels and choosing a nice texture!

Lots of people just don't understand!

Do you know how many staff works in Microsoft
only on Windows design! They are paid monthly
for their job, and salary must be realy high!
There must be more designers then staff in complete
Hyperion!
I talked Saturday in Slovenia with one of the
people of Cloanto, and he told me why there was
no PersonalPaint8 which had to be complete
animation studio with sound! Small group of
people just can't do everything and for "no" money!

Just consider and understand these facts, and
you will widen your horizons! This is very simple
math!

By the way, there was talk about a default gui, yet 4 official screens, 4 different settings. What will be the official theme then?

The announcement about 'default gui' might have been a little misleading. We wanted to show more of the design, but we were beaten by time. The images shown do indeed have elements of the default design, but there are some important elements missing.

For instance, the window gadgets shown here (close, zoom, depth, etc.) are in what could be called the 'fall back' mode. The same is the case for all other gadget images within the windows. I hope you'll be happier with the new ones.

The string gadgets are still using the original XEN style, not the new style. The same goes for a few other gadget frames. Work is still progressing on these. Expect to see more elements added as the tour proceeds.

There are certain factors, such as the layout and spacing, which must be left until the very final stages. Included with this are the screen backdrop and window textures, which wont be finalised until we have tested a larger number of different displays and user preferences.

Expect to see more in the coming weeks ahead.

What In the crap am I seeing here???

New screen shots...
Hyperion talking on the front lines about OS4...
Fleecy all over the place...

Hmmm....

Is this thing actually going to make it out the door?
Sure looks that way.

Only person I haven't seen speaking is Mr. McEwen himself.
Of course, I don't reckon I've ever seen him speak openly on an Amiga website. (not that I can remember)

Anyway, the screenshots look great, and some people are never satisfied no matter what you do.

Good Work Hyperion, Amiga Inc., and AmigaWorld.
This site really does rock!!!

By the way...

If anyone here knows anything about networking.... please speak up about a problem that I am working with even as we speak.

I am networking Windows 2000 with Windows XP.
Xp sucks by the way.

The networking part turned out to be very easy.
Got that going good.

What I need to know, is how to share the internet between the two.

The problem is...
I have a speedtouch "USB" modem on the host computer, and it does not look to be possible.
I've spent two nights on this project, and this usb modem is whooping my A**.

I have the networking completed, which means the cards are installed, all the right protocalls, clients, and services are installed.

Networking part is wonderful.
Speedtouch USB is whooping me.

Any ideas?
Or am I just gonna have to break down and purchase a real ethernet DSL modem?

Thanks

I think the brushed-metal looks like it came straight from magic-workbench (which I think was made to make workbench look remotely decent on a low-colour screen).

Indeed, here a majority of offices are networked, with all users generally having zero rights to change aboslutely anything - including installation of anything extra bar the odd BMP pic - (as Wallpapers in JPG arent supported in some NT networks)

As for the default OS4 look, I personally liked it a lot.
And one feature demonstrated rather nicely (that a lot of MOS people have been banging on about it having and AOS4 unlikely to have) is the font anti aliasing which improved the look no end.

To those still complaining of the fact you don't like the look, please remember that it is customisable and you can pretty much alter it all to suit your tastes (which incidentally many other people may not like )

All the guys are doing a sterling job, and it will be nice to see the finished 100% complete result when it is ready.

I (and most people) are certainly happy with the current ones, so the new ones can only be an improvement

Good good

BTW now that we know who's doing the design, I'm afraid that you "will then have to spend so many hours reading the emails of people who want to ask for this, that and the other that they will never get any work done." as Fleecy put it

Anyway, I like what I see

@Mountain_Myst

Not sure why you are having the problem, but in the network/internet wizard (im not familiar with winxp or 2000 so im just guessing here, i have winme) there is an option which states:

"How do you wish to connect to the Internet?"
Select your network card and you should be set. Again, I haven't used winxp or 2000 so I am hazarding a very bad guess.

I?m genuinely pleased by the screenshots. The RoadShow has given us a fresh new look, the promise of remarkable configurability and best of all, an indication of how close this OS is to being finished.

The majority of comments have been very positive here and other sites as well. Wishing you continuing success Amiga Inc., Hyperion and Eyetech.

I ?cut my teeth? on a Mac, then I had my Amiga(s) at home and now a PC (Sigh). Each transition was awkward at first, all had a different ?look and feel? but this OS holds great promise and close .....sooo close now!

That is a very good point about the Morphos review by Euginia Rogue.. What we need to bring Amiga OS to the masses is Native Applications.. People are wowed by software and multimedia ability. Thats why Mac is still alive. Easy to use and hook up digital content with suite of native killer applications built into the OS.. i.e. Imovie, Iphoto, Itunes.. But, that is not your job, you guys are doing the Os the apps must be 3rd party.. What about an ImageFx PPC with a redesigned interface or a Video Toaster 3 PPC Board?
