it is very strange : the new newlib.library.kmod from 28june2007 is in kickstart but when I type version newlib.library -> version 52.3

Make sure it's in the kicklayout, and check if there is one in libs: too... if it is, remove that...
If the problem remains, send me you kicklayout by email (thomasf@hyperion-entertainment.biz)

I merely wanted to follow it up; I just wanted to know which feature he meant, that's all!

There's no really any eye-popper feature in this update... Maybe Steven meant the shared objects, which are very nifty for people that do a lot of porting...

And now people quickly speculates that "maybe that blowing-away feature wasn't even present in this release",

There was never meant to be any blowing-away feature in this update.

Mind-blowing or not, I think all improvements are welcome!

Indeed

If I put the hold hid & massstorage.usbfd (from the Final OS4 CD), and warm reboot, USB is working again. BUT when I cold reboot (with reload of all kickstart) no more USB :((

It is highly advisable to use a powered hub, I don't know if you have one or not. Also, if you copy back any files, make sure that you copy them to the correct place, i.e. make sure you have them in the right spot (Kickstart drawer or DEVS:Usb)

I had a similar problem with USB. I found that if I stack more than three hubs in a row (including my KVM) it won't work anymore, so if you can, try to move hubs away.

If in doubt, use the USB files from the December update. Just make sure you wipe the new ones.

Meh, should read through the whole thread before answering...

Disregard my postings, then ...

I never realised my kicklayout was taken from my previous update4 partition (even if there is a drawer for os4final and an entry in kicklayout for os4final) and not from my os4final partition

slb always reads from the partition with the highest boot priority..

A totally flawless installation here

Thanks so much to Hyperion, the Frieden brothers and of course all the other developers & beta-testers for this update and your continued work on OS4.

No problem with the install here. I have an old 512Mb CF card that would fail to show on the WB most of the time, pops right up every time now

Just hope my IB crashing problem goes away, have 3 other 68k net apps that I like to run along with IB, not ideal.

Love the update, very nice guys.

Inserting two USB mass storage devices with the same name result in the system freezing, I have an SD card and a memory stick both named by default Kingston. Easily rectified by changing the name, but it didn't happen before and could result in a lot of frustration before you realize.

IIRC, the same happens with floppies, so it might not be mass storage related... and I think that problem was already there in 3.x

Installed fine here. Everything seems to be running OK. In fact things do seem to run faster now, which is nice. And is it just my imagination or are the colours more "vivid" now?

Thanks to all OS4 developers for all your hard work!

Man! This is great news, if you have an nAMigaOne, that is. What about the "Amiga classic" version? Is it still in development? Any news??

Cheers!

D.

This is probably something you probably want to look into, especially when the default name used when formatting all removable media is the same ("Empty"). I can't remember the last time I renamed a floppy or thumb stick

The question though, is how would one fix it? Would just reporting an error work? (eg "Volume 'blah' is already mounted") What happens when you have a floppy called "Foo" in the drive and you try Assign the name Foo to something else?

Hello EntilZha,

Quote:
No, since they do not fulfill the same purpose. shared objects can't share data per se, that is a functionality that you would have to implement yourself. Shared libraries do that automatically...

In that case it seems like "load-time link libraries" or similar would be a more accurate description. Is a new copy of the shared object loaded for every program that uses it? Would 50 programs load 50 copies of a 3MB shared object like the libpython25.so shared object? If so, I think I prefer shared libraries except for programs that can't be ported without shared objects.

My WorkBench partition is just about full and I don't feel like repartitioning my hard disk just now. Will the rest of the update work without Python and the shared objects? It looks like leaving them out would save me at least 20MB. I don't see any assignment for the SObjs directory (SOB: ?). Traditionally, Amiga system directories can be assigned to any disk or partition. I'd like to put them on my Work: partition. I've already had trouble assigning some system directories to other locations. Some of the system libraries and kickstart files seem to be hard coded to look for directories like OS4:Libs & OS4:Locale even if I assign them elsewhere.

@Xenic

The SObjs: assign is done automatically by DOS, just like the Sys: and other pre-made assigns.

If you haven't space for the shared pbjects, by all means leave them out at this stage. There is nothing in the OS that requires them (yet).

Why is your system partition so full? Mine is only 130 MB. Suggestion: move all your third party programs to another partition; that allows you to replace or update the system partition at any time without affecting your custom installation.

Great work guys. This update is sweet!

Thanks for your posts, help and advice.

The new update seems to have trouble recognizing one of my USB flash memory sticks. It is formatted for FFS. The LED on the device keeps blinking rapidly. Snoopy and SnoopDos see all kinds of activity, seems to be trying to detect the device and opening and closing some files related to FastFileSystem. Note: this device is ok on update #4 and Final update (Dec 2006). It was created back when I was still using update #4. I used Media Toolbox to create an FFS partition named JD0 in case calling it USB0 would interfere with the automatic detection of USB drives, and used format command to format it. Volume name is JD (short for JumpDrive).

My other USB flash memory stick seems to be ok. It is formatted for FAT32.

Other than that, everything else seems to be working ok.

Nice to see Final Writer 97 again.

UPDATE... TetiSoft answered my concern about my FFS USB flash memory stick.
