Announcement   Announcement : AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-release goes gold
   posted by Orgin on 16-Apr-2004 20:55:29 (94139 reads)
Leuven, Belgium - April 16, 2004. Hyperion Entertainment and the Amiga OS 4.0 development team are extremely pleased and relieved to announce that after nearly 30 months of painstaking development the Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release has gone gold and will be sent to the duplication plant on Monday, April 19, 2004.

The Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release consists of a current snapshot of AmigaOS 4.0 for the AmigaOne platform with a straightforward HTML installation guide in English, German, French and Italian as well as the Amiga OS 4.0 SDK.

The Amiga OS 4.0 SDK will allow near effortless migration of existing Amiga OS 3.x source-code to OS 4.0 as well as the creation of altogether new content.

The SDK comprises the following material:

* Complete Installer for easy and painless installation;
* GNU C Compiler 2.95.3;
* GNU C Compiler 3.4.0 RC 1;
* vbcc 0.8f;
* GNU GDB Source-Level Debugger;
* System Includes V 50;
* System Autodocs V 50;
* PDF Documentation on GNU C compilers and GNU Debugger;
* PDF Guide "Project Migration to AmigaOS 4.0";
* Example programs with source (among others: Reaction, expansion library, Roadshow, FFS2);
* Newlib.library (experimential, shared C library);
* CLIB2 source code.

Users will be able to register their copy at a soon-to-be-launched portal site which will offer Amiga OS 4.0 related content for download.

Hyperion Entertainment and the AmigaOS 4.0 development and beta-testing teams wish to thank all of you for your patience.

Apparently this news article has made it to that slash place. Hopefully we are receiving good publicity, and that a few idiots are ruining it for the whole Amiga scene

Yeah, there are a few there that like (very much like) to put down anything to do with Amiga, but notice that one little mention that OS4 is ready to send to duplication, and AW.net gets

slashdotted!

It seems that there's an awful lot of non-vocal types that are very interested in what goes on in Amigaland!

Also, I gotta do this again: and to Hyperion and the testers.

No, that's a new implementation by Olaf Barthel. And it's static. Newlib is shared.

Quote:
but will I eventually have a collection of "libc.library"s in LIBS:

No, definitely not. There's only one newlib.library. If there's really the need for different versions, the new library system can cope with this by providing separate interfaces. In OS4, one library can provide several versions of the same interface. This makes it possible to share code between the interfaces that didn't change, reducing the overal code size, and providing full backward and forward compatbilitily.

I think its more like anything that *isn't* Linux.

I stopped reading comments on that site ages ago because of too many trolls writing things like - The Amiga was a great computer 15 years ago but I don't think... blah blah blah

Still its all good publicity, may bring some true Amiga fans with spare cash back to the fold.

Please one question:

Can we see in the OS4 final version the WarpOS and/or WarpUP library ?

Can i play in the near future for example, Wipeout 2097 of my new AmigaOne ?

Thanks in advance

No. Clib2 is a from-the-ground new implementation from Olaf Barthel and others.

Thanks to the versioning in OpenLibrary we won't quite have DLL Hell, but will I eventually have a collection of "libc.library"s in LIBS:?

Note that Clib2 is static. Newlib is a shared library. The interfacing used in AmigaOS 4.0 will allow you to keep more than one version of the interface within a library, meaning that even incompatible changes will not result in more than one newlib.library.

OT: Does anybody knows how long does OS4 takes to boot in a G4 A1?

I just tried on my machine. Here's the times:

a) switching on the machine (cold start)
42 seconds. This could be improved, I have a rather long autoboot-delay (six seconds) and the startup sequence is somewhat crowded (you can delete empty lines and comments to speed things up)

b) pressing ctrl-amiga-amiga (warm start)
12 seconds

Using simple maths... Using my stopwatch it went up by 15 in 1 minute... so over 2 hours = 120*15=1800 additional views So not quite... At current rate should take little over 5 hours to reach 20,000 views... Although I'm sure you could something about that Mr Bodie_C15 sir

To quote Big Kev, "I'm excited!!" In fact, I'm excited, my kids are excited (maybe not, they're both less than 5)... Even my cat's excited (It must be, I just saw it move and it didn't have to be "nudged" with a slipper first). It's been a long time in coming, and I swore that when this day happened I would finally do the Nana Dance, so here it it:

Believe me, this is as close as you ever want to see me get to actually dancing. (If the people who came up with the expression "Dances like a white man" ever saw me in action they'd really know what they were talking about.... )

You need another one to play when the computer is actually ready to use.
Maybe add more for malfunctions and then we'll have music all day.

Heh, if I didn't have work tomorrow, I would sit here and make sure it hit 30,000 in 1 hour!

@Rogue

Any ideas on that the limits on th hard drive are?

In terms of max size? (I heard it may be 128GB, but is that in one patition or for the whole hd)

Also what is the max file size we can have on it? I want to create dvds but if the filesize limit is only 2Gb then it might be tricky creating image miles.

regards

Mostafa
