Announcement   Announcement : AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-release goes gold
   posted by Orgin on 16-Apr-2004 20:55:29 (94136 reads)
Leuven, Belgium - April 16, 2004. Hyperion Entertainment and the Amiga OS 4.0 development team are extremely pleased and relieved to announce that after nearly 30 months of painstaking development the Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release has gone gold and will be sent to the duplication plant on Monday, April 19, 2004.

The Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release consists of a current snapshot of AmigaOS 4.0 for the AmigaOne platform with a straightforward HTML installation guide in English, German, French and Italian as well as the Amiga OS 4.0 SDK.

The Amiga OS 4.0 SDK will allow near effortless migration of existing Amiga OS 3.x source-code to OS 4.0 as well as the creation of altogether new content.

The SDK comprises the following material:

* Complete Installer for easy and painless installation;
* GNU C Compiler 2.95.3;
* GNU C Compiler 3.4.0 RC 1;
* vbcc 0.8f;
* GNU GDB Source-Level Debugger;
* System Includes V 50;
* System Autodocs V 50;
* PDF Documentation on GNU C compilers and GNU Debugger;
* PDF Guide "Project Migration to AmigaOS 4.0";
* Example programs with source (among others: Reaction, expansion library, Roadshow, FFS2);
* Newlib.library (experimential, shared C library);
* CLIB2 source code.

Users will be able to register their copy at a soon-to-be-launched portal site which will offer Amiga OS 4.0 related content for download.

Hyperion Entertainment and the AmigaOS 4.0 development and beta-testing teams wish to thank all of you for your patience.

Thank you!

First of all, I'd like to thank my friends and family and those who made this all possible.

Thanks to my fans, you are the ones who really deserve this award....... er... uh..

Oh... Sorry wrong stage.

Seriously, a huge round of applause to Hyperion, Amiga, Eyetech, KMOS, and the entire OS4 team, as well as the beta testers and show organizers, for bringing this all together no matter how big or small your part was.

This is only the beginning of a new day in the life of Amiga. The sun breaking on the horizon, ensuring you that the day has begun, and the possibilities of all things to come next are endless. Great work to all involved.

@SOFISTISOFTWARE

Even if none of that was done, wich I doubt, this is really a BIG step because developers will now port to AOS4 natively. It also means the OS matured very much since when it started.

I hope there will be developer CD's to sell to everyone by the way...

Cheers

Oh, how could those develish developers in Belgium be so heartless? Announcing this in such a hateful, fiendish way, that it is causing near hysteria over at ANN as the trolls fall all over themselves trying to make this sound like a bad thing.

We really should be more sensitive to the needs of all those who have hated the Amiga, Amiga Inc, OS4 and KMOS so passionately.

They really needed more warning before this announcement came out.

How could we be so unloving?

(ps: Thank you to Hyperion, all the development team, and .... y e s .... AInc and KMOS.)

Paul

Hehehehe I know exactly what you mean by ANN, and someone said something about Genesi about to announce something (or something like that, didn't stick around to read it all) but then they HAVE to announce a big deal now, as they are finally about to not only have competition inthe OS stakes - but a MorphOS KILLER.

Amiga - The ORIGINAL MorphOS and THEN SOME.

I just went over to take a look, I bet that thread turns into a triple digit before the weekend is out.

The high (low?) lights so far:

* Nate Downes arguing that Hyperion is guilty of false advertising, by cleverly using the music industry definition of "going gold" (ie selling 1/2 million copies) instead of the computer industry definition (master is ready for pressing). Since Hyperion clearly hasn't sold 500K copies, they're all going to hell/jail/whatever. Maybe Nate should go and take some debating lessons.

* Rich Woods with yet another enigmatic pronouncement, apparently Genesi has "an upcoming announcement" that "will suprise a lot of people". Fair enough, I would also insert the words "and infuriate"; that's what Bill Buck likes to do with his announcements, so nothing new there. I wonder what Rich's stake is in this, since Amiga Inc (his usual target) isn't involved any more. Unless he's decided to come out of the closet and admit he's just another Buck fanboy.

Okay, I turn my back for a few hours, and all of a sudden all HELL breaks loose! 90 POSTS! And they all say the same thing!

Well, I for one am going to...

Oh, hell..

woohoo!

If I weren't thousands of miles away and across one very deep pond, I'd buy all you Hyperion and tester guys all the beverages you want. I'd even throw in real food!

Now, go and take a much-deserved rest before finishing up V1.0.

(Now all the CSPPC guys are going to hate me!)

When you get that many blue trolls clutching at straws and spouting concentrated nonsense, isn't there some danger of them reaching critical mass and blowing up the world?

Frankly I think this is awesome.

If the Micro A1 is reasonably priced I'll have to grab OS4 and one of those boards when I get some free cash. Heck I just might even start to code again...

Oh, and let me be the first to say that the consumer release of OS4 will be out...

It somehow seems I'm repeating what's already been said, but wonderfull news and excellent work and a huge pat on the back to the whole OS4 team!

I have a small question though, those that buy an AmigaOne after this point, can they buy the pre-release cd and install and use it until the final version is out, or do they have to wait until the final release goes gold?
