| Do you have a domain server ? I try to connect to a Win2k Pro so as it's not a domain server, I left the smb.conf with domain server at "Yes" but it doesn't work. It asks a password when I do "smbclient -L xxx", as there is no password anywhere, I type enter, and it says an error message... It's strange that it asks for a password whereas I want to display all shares (-L)... _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation

| To be able to access shares on a Win2k machine, you need to setup a user with name and password in Win2k. It's the same if you want to access shares on a Win2k machine from W98 etc. The other way around doesn't require this though. |

I have no domain name server, if that's what you mean. My setup is like this:
A1 ->Router <-> Debianx86, WinXP,Win98SE,Win98SE. All linked together through the router.
A screenshot here, showing Tango and smbfs-mounts. Size 440kb. _________________ Site admins are people too..pooff!

| I cannot seem to download the 2nd file (the update file), I just get an ftp error from the server, I don't suppose anyone is able to email me just the update file, or tell me where else I can get it ?
I could do with getting samba running, I've tried in the past (on classic amiga) and always failed miserably |

| It seems that the ftpserver hosting the 2nd file does not like IBrowse. After some failures to connect I tried connecting with AmiTradeCenter and then I came in (on the 3 try without PASV).
Got Samba up n running now, almost as easy as on the Classic :)

My ISP is doing maintenance work. They say it will be working again sometime at midnight CET.
*edit* seems my ISP forgot to mention that they need two midnights _________________ Site admins are people too..pooff!

Thanks for the tip, I tried IBrowse, no luck, Mozilla on PC, No luck, in desperation even tried Internet Explorer , no luck. CuteFTP with PASV mode turned off worked 1st time. Downloading now, then I'll see if I can get samba working. |

If you have problems downloading the 2nd file, I have mirrored it at:
Samba Update
I uploaded it to make it eaiser for me to transfer the file from PC to Amiga, but I'll leave it there for a while in case anyone else finds it useful
EDIT:
Excellent, I've now got samba working, I can see the PCs on the network, but they can't see me, which is just the way I like it |

I have never used samba before, but i got it working right away. Just ONE question..
On my 250 gig eksternal HD on the pc almost all files has a space or some other [ ) alike long filenames... smbclient does not like those files and i cant get them.. (without renaming)
A easy sollution for this.. like download a whole directory ?
Not so experienced with lc, get, open etc :)
get is okey, is there something for a dir ?
A short list of other useful commands would also be appriciated, the samba doc on the net is just too complex and has nothing about this that i can see!!! |

| @Fraggel:
No need to rename any files on your pc. All files on FAT32 and NTFS filesystems also have a short filename for compatibility. If you do a "dir /x" on a cmd.exe/command.com window you will be able to see those short names. |

| Thanks Sinan for updating and publishing that stuff.
Reminds me to get my server up and alive again- theres more OS4 nuggets of info that need to leak out over time!
I also want to release more infos on how to use SAMBA more effectively and using 'smbfs' is much a key part of that.
oh, also how to have SAMBA controlling all your Windows PCs from your Amiga OS4 box!

| you're not running nmbd
do this, and the others will see you - so long as your WORKGROUP/DOMAIN is correctly configured! |
