The drawers has to be seen in some 'context'(= environment = a workbench example).
The more 'contetxs' the drawer fits, the better.

@padrino

I like that one! It maybe a quick and simple hack, but looks like an AmigaOS drawer.

Sorry Masson, I had to vote something else, maybe this could be inspuration?

IMO the icons do not match up well compared to the professional look of recent PNG icon packages such as for instance the Ami Crystal package.

However judging from AmigaWorld's WIP screenshot (OS3.9-like) of Mason's efforts from some months ago, I can see that alot of work has been done on those already. IMO it would be nice if these icons could be contributed regardless for when I am in a more nostalgic mood.

WIP is very good, the only iusse is missed dark border around some icons like the drawer one. These new have an old 1.3/2.0 style, why come back in that style?

I`m sorry to say but as a designer - none of the above. I vote for #5

Your work was always been pretty good but I see that you are now very limited to that design which is very, very oldfashioned [!] and won`t impress anybody outside the amiga hard core scene, believe me.

Please try to expand your view, check on the internet various desktop snapshots and see which one is the best. Just type "drawer icons" or similar on Google / image search and see how other ppl did it. Check for MAC [or even MorphOs] designs, they already created very modern look. When you are about to create something, you give the best!

dj.

Hmmm, those icons are quite cute.
However, i would say "choice #5", because as it has been said before, they can no longer be considered "modern" or very attractive compared to those found on other systems.

But although i found the png iconsets in MacOS or Morphos very nice (the PowerIcons port for OS4 looks good too), they have a major drawback in my opinion : they are no "two-states" icons.

I consider this AmigaOs feature to be quite unique, and having two different images in the same icon adds to the os' personality imho.

So unfortunatly, one must now face a though choice : AmigaOs-like icons with 2 states, but limited to 256 color/icon, or pretty, one state, png icons.

That's a choice i'm not yet ready to make... but so far i'm still going fine with 3.9 icons :)

Or pretty one state as well as two state png icons in AROS ...

I'd rather number one out of all of those, but i feel a new one should be done or at least minor improvements to them. The thing that looks the odest is how far back the draw seems to go. It gives the effect no just that it goes back some distance but that the back of the draw looks smaller than the front. I think it could be widened up a little at the back to give it a more real effect. Also, maybe some texture would look good, like the wood grain, but wood grain looks ugly :) So maybe a brushed metall finish? or something to that effect... or maybe just a different color? Blue metal? What about a glass draw? :)

now that's what i call icons!!!! i wouldn't be ashamed to show off aOS4 to the world with those installed, AS STANDARD, not as a bolt-on.

reviewers and critics will be introduced to AOS4 directly and won't know about replacing icons... and after all... why should they need to??? presentation and packaging goes a long way...

lets keep the patches down to a minimum... OS3.1 was pig ugly as standard, but offered a lot of promise once patched to hell, and having had its icons replaced with e.g. newIcons etc.

BUT THIS SHOULD NO LONGER BE THE CASE WITH OS4!!! with every new os release, more and more patches are integrated into the OS, which is great, but let's stop the trend and have an OS to be proud of, out of the box!

a note to HYPERION:
why not integrate image2icon into the OS??? build in thumbnail support into the OS, but have it save the thumbnail images in the tooltypes say, or a 'hidden' directory, or a thumbs.db file???

Even though these drawers look pretty cool, I think the angled file cabinet icon looks best. But if you were going retro with some of the icons, then these would fit.

I dont think no one can make a cool drawer, why stick to the past? Be creative, invent something new

Yuck... Looking at those icons one word pops into my mind: AMOS, and those freeware, amateur quality arcades. Sorry...

I just did a search on google for drawers and came upon (fnarfnar)

Now thats what I call an Icon!

(Back on topic), how about an icon that fits the power of the machine it's running on?
Somthing with gradiant fills and perhaps a few twinkly bits..

Nah, I prefer the girl

Wow-we-wow! Now that is what I call a drawer.

Amiga definately needs some profressional consistency. Perhaps contact the people that work on skinning profressionally...they always seem to come up with some cool stuff. Look at the Opera skins/icons and OSX themes. good stuff in my opinion!

I'd like padrino's one, #5 or the "old" 3.9 style but maybe rendered with more colors per icon, without dithering, so that it looks more real..
