I like design number three, but perhaps the drawer pull could be brass, instead of gray.

I voted #3... but also #5 could be a good choiche...

First thing to do to improve these designs is to add a drop shadow... please Mason, are you listening ?

I agree totally with DJ Nick. I would like to see rendered icons as seen
in MacOSX. They look very crisp and professional. Sorry mason, but your icons
looks really dated :(

Yes, rendering is the key. There are alot of folks in the design world that use Maya for web and 3d rendering. We could use some Maya gurus to come up with some good stuff. I think you can get a free evaluation copy of the program.

Well, the icons do look good. No doubt about that. Simple and luckily no shadows. But a wooden texture will look bad on a lot of backdrops and it looks quite old. That dark grey on the metal ones is quite dull too. Looks quite depressive...

Why not try something completely different for the OS4 icons? Something modern, simple, stylish and original.

Judging by the screenshots so far on OS4, i must say that the whole OS4 looks old and dated. That goes for those blue tabs and red font too. Nope, the looks of OS4 are far from spectacular at the moment (this is ofcourse no judgement on the OS4 icons because we haven't seen them yet).

How about something brighter like these?

Of course this would only be part of a theme. Many different styles should be available.

The icons all look too flat and remind me of the old 4-color AmigaOS drawers, or maybe some Magic Workbench thing. FYI, I don't care for the AmiCrystal icons either. They're certainly very distinctive, but strike me at too big and "cartoony". I vote for the OS3.5+ drawer Glowicon (or a minor variation) but rendered with more colors, at least until Hyperion decides to totally revamp the icon look.

Problem with drop shadows is that they really need an alpha channel to work with any background

For now, also a "fake" shadow can do the trick.

Until the icon system will be updated...

I really like the old GlowIcons by Matt Chaput. I think they are beautiful and unique. I vote for redraw these in a little bigger size and more colors (I dream of 32bit 128x128 Glow-PNG-Icons... :)

I'd have to go with #5. I'm sorry to say I think those icons are extremely old-fashioned.

Have a look at xicons and see what people are creating for the Mac OS - there's no comparison.

I suggest trawling that site and seeing if one of those people can create an Amiga drawer set. It might not be too expensive, seeing as they don't get paid for the work they put on there.

I don't mean to sound rude when I don't post that often, but I think we need a far more modern icon set.

Chris

EDIT: Ok, next to SnowBord's "they all suck" it wasn't that harsh, but the sentiment is not dissimilar...

@Virgola:

NOW we`re talking! Maybe a tiny little bit isometric? And with a nice drop shadow, and these will be on everyones desktop for sure

@ virgolamobile

Excellent drawers.

@ Zorro

Personally I would prefer to have no shadows for as long as there is no proper alpha channel transparency support.

@virgolamobile

I must say, they look nice. :) Though I think they are a bit to big and look more like an "executive case", especially the wooden one.
Stll, I like them and I think one could build on this... :)

Mario
