Software News   Software News : AltiVec-enabled distributed.net Client released
   posted by Futaura on 31-Aug-2004 17:16:04 (7669 reads)
I'm pleased to announce the initial release of a fully (RC5-72 and OGR-P2) AltiVec-enabled build (494b) of the distributed.net client for AmigaOS 4.0 which is now available from the usual place: http://www.distributed.net/download/prerelease.php

To be able to use the AltiVec cores, you'll obviously need a G4, and more importantly kernel 51.12 (previous kernels do not have working AltiVec support). Of course, this client will work ok on non-AltiVec cpus too, for which the usual scalar cores will be used as before.

For more information on the client, RC5-72 and OGR please visit the Distributed Amiga website and be sure to join the team.

This all looks very nice... But what is it?

Please don't say, read the site

I've seen loads of people say we want "AltiVec" bu I've never know what it is. I didn't seem to need it so I never got into what it was.

Again, nice to see some news that everyone wants again.

Keep em comin, FuZion.

AltiVec are high performance extensions to the PowerPC core. Apple calls it 'Velocity Engine'. IBM calls is 'VMX'. Motorola/Freescale call it 'Altivec'. Architecturally, AltiVec adds 128-bit-wide vector execution units. G4 400 is ~ 90 MegaFlops in processing power. Using Altivec it acheives about 340 MegaFlops. Most people like the idea of getting a 3 fold improvement on parts of their processing needs.

Nice explanation. Cheers BrianK.

Er... I'd like to order an AltiVec please. Yes, to go.

Thanks, FuZion.

Hmm, a lot of good this does without the said kernel version.

So, any word on the update?

I know,

I looked and didn't see any mention if this could be run on the older kernel? I'd go ahead and replace the one I have now if it would automatically revert to the scalar cores when the newer kernel is not available.

yeah, not much point in posting this as news since only BETA TESTERS have the kernel it needs etc.

anyway i can tell that "its ALOT faster" than older versions using non altivec

It can be run on the older kernels, yes. It will drop back to the scalar cores in those cases.

@RedMelons

Yes, but the Altivec is not used, or is it?

@tomazkid

No. it doesn't use Altivec, but as DWolfman said

"I'd go ahead and replace the one I have now if it would automatically revert to the scalar cores when the newer kernel is not available."

I just thought that I'd mention that it does detect that Altivec is not used, and selects the appropriate core.

Now if it was for something useful, Like Ligandfit (search for cure for cancer) I'd download the client immediately.

@Vader, etc

OK, I'll go ahead and load it up. At least it will work for now anyway, then I'll get a nice boost in speed once the OS4 update is out.

origin: i only have 800 G4 but i can atleast say whats changed..

Without Altivec: Rc5-72 - 3 million
OGR - 8 Million

With Altivec: Rc5-72 9 Million
OGR 19 Million

might be that its even faster, this is just a test from my side anyway.

cheers

Is OGR = OGR-P2 ?

My AmigaONE with prerelease does 14 million nodes / sec without Altivec.

(My P4 - 3,06 GHz does RC72 - 4 million and OGR 11 million BTW)
