AltiVec are high performance extensions to the PowerPC core. Apple calls it 'Velocity Engine'. IBM calls is 'VMX'. Motorola/Freescale call it 'Altivec'. Architecturally, AltiVec adds 128-bit-wide vector execution units. G4 400 is ~ 90 MegaFlops in processing power. Using Altivec it acheives about 340 MegaFlops. Most people like the idea of getting a 3 fold improvement on parts of their processing needs. |

| yeah, not much point in posting this as news since only BETA TESTERS have the kernel it needs etc.
anyway i can tell that "its ALOT faster" than older versions using non altivec _________________ See my blog and collection website! . https://www.blog.amigaguru.com

I looked and didn't see any mention if this could be run on the older kernel? I'd go ahead and replace the one I have now if it would automatically revert to the scalar cores when the newer kernel is not available. |
It can be run on the older kernels, yes. It will drop back to the scalar cores in those cases. |

No. it doesn't use Altivec, but as DWolfman said
"I'd go ahead and replace the one I have now if it would automatically revert to the scalar cores when the newer kernel is not available."
I just thought that I'd mention that it does detect that Altivec is not used, and selects the appropriate core. |

| Now if it was for something useful, Like Ligandfit (search for cure for cancer) I'd download the client immediately. _________________ ****************************************** I dont suffer from Insanity - I enjoy it

OK, I'll go ahead and load it up. At least it will work for now anyway, then I'll get a nice boost in speed once the OS4 update is out. _________________ This posting, in it's entirety, is the opinion and/or statement of the author and does not reflect the views and/or position of this site.

| origin: i only have 800 G4 but i can atleast say whats changed..
Without Altivec: Rc5-72 - 3 million OGR - 8 Million
With Altivec: Rc5-72 9 Million OGR 19 Million
might be that its even faster, this is just a test from my side anyway.

Is OGR = OGR-P2 ?
My AmigaONE with prerelease does 14 million nodes / sec without Altivec.
(My P4 - 3,06 GHz does RC72 - 4 million and OGR 11 million BTW) |
