hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : First AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-Release update available
   posted by MikeB on 11-Oct-2004 1:21:36 (15420 reads)
It is with considerable satisfaction that Hyperion Entertainment can now announce the immediate availability for download of the first Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release update for registered Amiga OS 4.0 users.

Notice: A moderator pressed the wrong button by mistake and deleted the previous news item and 120+ comments. Oh well, though luck, feel free to start again.

Due to the extent and scope of the improvements incorporated into the update, it comes in the form of a full ISO image (33 MB) which needs to be burned on CD-R(W) by the user and is intended to replace the original Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release CD for installation and rescue purposes.

Please note that the file as well as the resulting CD is for personal use only and may not be distributed in any form to third parties.

Registered users may also opt to order a new full CD which also contains the updated SDK and contribution section (details and terms to be announced shortly).

Among the new features are:

* Kernel-Level Altivec support.
* Much improved compatibilty/speed of 68k emulation (JIT not included yet)
* Improved 68k FPU emulation
* Fully PowerPC-native Picasso96/graphics system
* Fully PowerPC-native MUI
* USB support for input devices
* Support for onboard serial and parallel hardware
* Driver support for the SiI0680 IDE adaptor (including UDMA support)
* Improved PIO mode VIA driver
* Improved Internet capabilities and better ethernet support.
* Printing support
* Improved audio hardware support, including new drivers.
* Comprehensive bug fixes, speed improvements, added features and functionality across all system components.
* and much more...

my os4 update wont install keeps coming up with grimreaper complains about c:setpatch then when i hit more it says cant open window.class

Make sure that you boot from the correct CD, and that it also loads the kickstart modules from that CD.

Try to make a "version c:SetPatch" to see if it is the right version.

The problem with Window class is that C:SetPatch is the first program executed and therefore the required "assign add libs: Sys:Classes" is missing.

To make absolutely sure, you need to set the boot device to CD-ROM, either through the menu, or by entering

setenv boot1 cdrom
boota

from the U-Boot command promot.

Well, my AmigaOne has no ram, but I can't wait to get the update, nonetheless!!!!!

AND, this is STILL "A work in progress".

More assembler PLEASE!!!!!

AmigaOne! Pre0.2-AOS4.0! Incomplete, ... and yet superior? How can that be??

Do i need to update the SBL ?
I did not do that yesterday but everything boot'ed normally.

It's not strictly required but recommended. Highly recommended

Is it any benefit in the new SLB ?

Yes. You get a nice cursor-controllable menu of installed configurations. And it can handle LBA-48.

[quote]Also, will the moovid be available ?[(quote]

To be honest, I dunno...

Can anyone tell me what printer support is like in OS4?

Is it the same print engine as AmigaOS 3.9 or has it been updated?

What models of printers are covered? OS3.9 only did HP printers...

Thanks.

@All

I must apologise to Hyperion, the OS4 Team, all of the members who posted a reply into the original news story, and all of the members who didn't get to read any of it's content before hand. I deleted the entire lot by accident.

It was actually an attempt to update the story to keep it on top, but I hit the delete button instead of the edit one. What was intended to be a couple of quick edits before I went off to bed, turned into a nightmare before I even got there.

You are pretty keen there. Of course you are correct.

@ Herewegoagain

Some time ago I wanted to reply to someone's message and instead of pressing the reply button I pressed the edit button and removed most of his original message replacing them with my own.

Ever since I have been more careful hitting the right buttons, else it could just as well have been me! Yesterday when I received your PMs I noticed you were in a state of shock, but don't worry too much as making mistakes is part of human nature and by making them we have the ability to learn from them. Maybe the excitement about the AOS4 update also contributed.

Hi Herewegoagain,

Sorry to blow the whistle on your faux pas.

I honestly thought it might be funny to just throw something at the one we gave praise to, with the little contest we had a week or so ago. Btw, I voted for your avatar (covers heinie, hehe*).

Must ... restrain ... commentaries...

* I did vote for Smeagol.

@Athiest

That's okay... I was going to post the apology last night, but I was waiting in hopes that the backup of the database had already occured, and that it could simply be restored this morning. Unfortunately, my mistake happened before the backup took place.... so now I have to just face the hard facts.

Why wasn't there a "Are you sure you want to DELETE this thread?" warning?

Why was the thread actually deleted from the database, and not merely marked as deleted (and hence be recoverable)?

Looks like bad software to me.

Cool - fantastic work Hyperion et al.

Has anyone tried ImageFX using the update? I'm dying to find out how much of a boost it gets from (a) the chunky CPU power that is now available and (b) having PPC-native graphics...

/me wonders if Nova will develop an OS4-native version, or whether they're now tied to MOS...

There is such a warning. You can't miss it, well atleast if you're not Herewegoagain.

It's the way of xoops.

> Looks like bad software to me.

Herewegoagain + xoops = bad idea :)

// pleased to read about the update. I've pretty much decided I will never buy an amiga again, but I'll be darned if it doesn't make me proud everytime this gets closer to completion.

I'm just online with OS4 via dialup the very first time! And I can't believe how much faster this is than Mozilla. With an emulated browser!
Thank you again Hyperion!

Alex.

If in doubt, use SLB_V2

No, DON'T!

Use either slb_v2_nolinux or slb_v2_nosfs, depending if you need to dual-boot Linux or not.
The old slb is buggy and will be no longer supported in future versions.

Just updated A1, new firmware and THE Update. Everything went smoothly, as described in docs. GREAT JOB HYPERION! You guys rule.. no doubt about that.

Few notices, YAM starts like a lightning compared to before, so does IBrowse. Overall, the system is much more responsive and quicker, as others have pointed out.

Now to download some new stuff for A1 from depot

It's much better today than it was yesterday. I actually was able to get to the website and download it today. I got the iso burned, when I get home from work I'll do the install.

Thanks to all who made this possible.
