hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : First AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-Release update available
   posted by MikeB on 11-Oct-2004 0:21:36 (15267 reads)
It is with considerable satisfaction that Hyperion Entertainment can now announce the immediate availability for download of the first Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release update for registered Amiga OS 4.0 users.

Notice: A moderator pressed the wrong button by mistake and deleted the previous news item and 120+ comments. Oh well, though luck, feel free to start again.

Due to the extent and scope of the improvements incorporated into the update, it comes in the form of a full ISO image (33 MB) which needs to be burned on CD-R(W) by the user and is intended to replace the original Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release CD for installation and rescue purposes.

Please note that the file as well as the resulting CD is for personal use only and may not be distributed in any form to third parties.

Registered users may also opt to order a new full CD which also contains the updated SDK and contribution section (details and terms to be announced shortly).

Among the new features are:

* Kernel-Level Altivec support.
* Much improved compatibilty/speed of 68k emulation (JIT not included yet)
* Improved 68k FPU emulation
* Fully PowerPC-native Picasso96/graphics system
* Fully PowerPC-native MUI
* USB support for input devices
* Support for onboard serial and parallel hardware
* Driver support for the SiI0680 IDE adaptor (including UDMA support)
* Improved PIO mode VIA driver
* Improved Internet capabilities and better ethernet support.
* Printing support
* Improved audio hardware support, including new drivers.
* Comprehensive bug fixes, speed improvements, added features and functionality across all system components.
* and much more...

@Dirk-B

That didn't work either... even in the Amiga early startup screen (i.e. the one which appears with the left+rignt mouse button pressed) no hard disk partitions show, only a "CD0"!

At least Linux still works, so I can use the net...

f in doubt, use SLB_V2. That's the full version that can boot everything from every file system

Hm, are you sure about this? AFAIR the SLB_V2 in the cd root dir has the same size as the nolinux version, so I thought it's the same.

Even better, try ClassAction, it even uses a ReAction GUI (and after the Pre-Update the pattern select now works

Oh boy, I really love the update, everything is so fast!

I managed to install the update and everything works great and much
faster, but I feel like I miss something along the installation...
which is the exact installation path?? I simply booted my
AmigaOne and when the workbench appeared I slid in the update CD
and simply run the "install" icon, then chosing to update the existing
system instead of a clean install. When it arrived at mediatoolbox
I just skipped that part and went ahead... it completed the process
and everything went well.

Did I miss setting the new SLB from mediatoolbox?? should I have
done that step instead of skipping?? May I do it now??

Another thing: before doing as just written, I tried booting the
AmigaOne with the update CD in the drive: I got the system booting
from the update CD, and got an unreadable and flickering display
right like I had when I did the original prerelease install (Radeon 7000...
that time managed to install it at hint looking at the install guide on a
nearby pc and trying to hit the right place with the mouse... not a thing
I would like to do many times ):
thought that the scrambled display with the Radeon was solved with
the uboot update... or am I wrong??

Anyway am glad it was possible to update starting from workbench,
as the unreadable display would have made it impossible if the
procedure would have been just a bit different from what described
on the installation guide.

Bye
Francesco

Should be Nova Design as the referral was to ImageFX.

As to Nova's status? Well since the IFX lite has been made available to both MOS and OS4, neutral springs to mind.

Kermit has always had a policy of not announcing anything until it's ready to ship, so I wouldn't hold your breath. Oh and he has also stated that they didn't have an A1 to develop on anyway.
Guess with the SDK out soon, they might be in a position to develop in some way or form.

Actually, I meant Nova Design; I forgot that there was a piece of software called Nova!
Sorry for the confusion

se either slb_v2_nolinux or slb_v2_nosfs, depending if you need to dual-boot Linux or not.

So I should use slb_v2_nosfs if I have YDLinux on the MASTER HD and AOS 4 on a second Slave HD, if I understand this correctly??

@zetaeffe
It is better to boot from the cd not from the old installation and then install.

And even more it is better to make a new installation (deleting the old one), you know it is fast to backup the prefs only.

hmmmm, I believe that you may have missed something by doing you install that way. To get a clean install, I would recomend that from the UBoot to put in your CD then use the following:

ide reset
setenv boot1 cdrom
boota

Then follow the requestors, that will bring you to the install and yes chose the Mediatoolbox to update the SLB. Then update. That should give you a clean install.

@mbilla

If you aren't using the SLB to boot Linux (you stop the booting and type "diskboot" to get into Linux, right?) then you can pick whichever SLB you want. If you use the SLB to load Linux (I don't, so really don't know how this works yet), then you'll want the nosfs version.

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

Yes, you can do anytime and I encourage you and everyone else to do it, since the old SLB had some bugs that were fixed (the new one has newer bugs ).

Plus you'll get a fancy menu with timeout !

The new slb is in the root directory of the update CD IIRC.

Woohoo!

OK, I managed to rustle up another DVD drive, and I managed to update my UBoot and AmigaOS. It's amazing - my Amiga instantly went from painful to use, to pretty darn cool

I did run into the grim reaper with setpatch, and I found a way around it. I wanted to reformat the drive and start from scratch again, because I didn't have anything that particularly needed to be saved and because I'd crashed a few times while the hard drive was being written to, so there was a good chance that the disk was a bit mangled in places. So what I did was to boot into the old version OS4, use the media toolbox to delete all the partitions in the hard disk, and booted off the new install CD. No more grim reaper.

Another thing that I had to do: the install guide says to keep DH0's boot priority at 0, but if I do that and boot with the install CD inserted, the CD is the one that gets to boot. I set DH0's boot priority to 15, and that problem's gone too.

I really must congratulate Hyperion and all the beta testers, the new build of OS4 is leaps ahead of the previous one. The only minor niggle left is that the VIA driver still works in PIO mode, but the whole system works so much faster, that it's not a big deal any more.
