hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : First AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-Release update available
   posted by MikeB on 11-Oct-2004 1:21:36 (15310 reads)
It is with considerable satisfaction that Hyperion Entertainment can now announce the immediate availability for download of the first Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release update for registered Amiga OS 4.0 users.

Notice: A moderator pressed the wrong button by mistake and deleted the previous news item and 120+ comments. Oh well, though luck, feel free to start again.

Due to the extent and scope of the improvements incorporated into the update, it comes in the form of a full ISO image (33 MB) which needs to be burned on CD-R(W) by the user and is intended to replace the original Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release CD for installation and rescue purposes.

Please note that the file as well as the resulting CD is for personal use only and may not be distributed in any form to third parties.

Registered users may also opt to order a new full CD which also contains the updated SDK and contribution section (details and terms to be announced shortly).

Among the new features are:

* Kernel-Level Altivec support.
* Much improved compatibilty/speed of 68k emulation (JIT not included yet)
* Improved 68k FPU emulation
* Fully PowerPC-native Picasso96/graphics system
* Fully PowerPC-native MUI
* USB support for input devices
* Support for onboard serial and parallel hardware
* Driver support for the SiI0680 IDE adaptor (including UDMA support)
* Improved PIO mode VIA driver
* Improved Internet capabilities and better ethernet support.
* Printing support
* Improved audio hardware support, including new drivers.
* Comprehensive bug fixes, speed improvements, added features and functionality across all system components.
* and much more...

Why wasn't there a "Are you sure you want to DELETE this thread?" warning?

As Orgin said, there was a requester in between, but since I thought I had just hit the "Edit" button, I simply selected "Yes" to the prompt, thinking I was confirming to do an edit to the article. It wasn't until I was returned to the main list of news items and saw it missing that I realized what had just happened. The software is not the fault in this case. It was me not paying close attention to the prompt.

That's okay... I was going to post the apology last night, but I was waiting in hopes that the backup of the database had already occured, and that it could simply be restored this morning. Unfortunately, my mistake happened before the backup took place.... so now I have to just face the hard facts.

It's not the end of the world. When I came back to the site and saw only 2 pages of postings I kept refreshing a lot since I thought it was cache. What else could it be? So some postings got deleted? Should we give a hoot? Nah not really. What's done is done etc. It takes a man to admit his mistakes!

It is with considerable satisfaction that mjohnson can now announce the immediate availability of the first Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release update on his SYS: partition.

Sh*t f***ing hey it's fast! (Apart from the actual download, that is. )

It boots in no-time, the OS is really, really a lot faster now, and I can at last make good use of my speedy internet-connection!

I didn't get any noticable lag during startup (hence, "boots in no-time" ), and I have yet to suffer any lock-ups during normal operation. And I've encountered no other problems so far. And I did chose to "update" my current installation. So everything seems splendid so far. (Knock on wood)
I can also do a "soft reset" now (that used to freeze in the past), which is cool.

And, by the way, did I mention that it's really, really a lot faster now? Seriously, I've got most of my still pictures scanned and stored on my HD, and I used the excellent Image2Icon utility a few months back to create thumbnails as .info files. In a few of the directories, I've got around 200 somewhat semi-big'ish (6.5k) icons. It takes about a second to open them now. Used to take several, with emphasis on several, seconds prior to the update. This is a very enjoyable side-effect of the update, methinks!

I must also say that the wildcard option in the dos-prefs is really neat! If a small request could be made, I wouldn't mind if a "Unix dirs" check-box was added in there sometime as well.

So, all-in-all, so far, it's marvelous! And a big thanks to all the developers for this one, it's a beaut!

Make that 3 other people. The first thing I see when I boot of the update CD is the Grim Reaper (in OS 3.x style gui) telling me setpatch crashed. I tried again several times, until finally the install script started, but then Mediatoolbox crashed. Any Idea what causes this or what I can do about it?

Kind regards,

Dennis

Please try a clean reinstall.

I knew this installing over existing installations was going to give rise to problems ...

That is wat I tried to do the whole time...

The problem is solved now. I tried an other optical drive and all the problems were gone. I guess the Toshiba DVD drive was to blame.

Kind regards,

Dennis

I got another funny problem. I updated U-Boot and SLB and then used the update option for the the OS. But now I just get the kickstart screen... The kickstart *will* boot from the CD, but even so the partitions on my hard disk don't show. If I run "Mounter" they show!!

I had a lot of trouble when booting from the new install cd (horrible screen, shaded buttons, copy failed a.s.o.) when I did a soft reset from the old installation.. But a hard reset (, a *dough* and a slap on the forehead) did the trick. Now everything works perfect. The boot time is just ridiculous.

Tomorrow I“ll buy a SI0680 card. Too bad I have to use my only pci slot for it. At least my onboard sound is working ;P

Edit: I have the µ-A1-mk2. So no reason to go "how did u get onboard sound working???!??"

Hey dude - you probably did ppl a favour. News item down would have freed up the download que over at hyperion.biz , and thus enabling some to get OS4 update sooner than later

Uh, Nova, tied to MOS ? Nova will be the next generation of Warp3D, done by Hans-Jörg, Sam and me, and surely not tied to MOS.

Use either slb_v2_nolinux or slb_v2_nosfs, depending if you need to dual-boot Linux or not.The old slb is buggy and will be no longer supported in future versions.

Oups, sorry

Hmm, the CD crashed ? I think the CD worked for the other people.

Please make sure that you are fully booting from the CD. That is, don't boot the modules from harddisk, and then the CD. Do a cold reset, and make sure that the CD is detected by U-Boot (it's detected correctly when it reports a size). Then, let it boot the CD by either

setenv boot1 cdrom
boota

or pressing enter at the progress bar and selecting "CDROM" from the dropbox.

Holy snapping duck sh*t! My A1 is fast. My A1 no longer has that annoying multi-minute pause between loading the kernal modules and loading OS4! Netowrk traffic between my A1 and the PC using SMBFS is way faster (before it was about 50kbps, maybe...) than before! That mysterious rash I had is gone! Is there nothing the Update can't fix?

Granted, I now have some new problems since the upgrade:
* AMP2 now gurus when I try and configure it.
* DiskMaster2 now gurus on startup.

I think it's because I haven't moved over to my new IDE card just yet. Doing that later in the week and doing a complete fresh install on my brand new 80GB drive.

You need another one to play when the computer is actually ready to use.
Maybe add more for malfunctions and then we'll have music all day.

Amplifier has turned out to be a more stable bet under OS4 lately.

Never liked DiskMaster, try DirectoryOpus 4.

Uh, no, not really. SetPatch is still required to make third party devices NSD-Compliant. It should certainly work with that.

Okay, sorry about that. I had/have commentted out the c:setpatch in my S-S file a couple weeks ago as I was getting the error mention here. I have not been aware of any problems since that time. Seems I need to have it back in my S-S file.

Thanks

Have you checked the bootpriority of your harddisk?
If it says -128 or something like that, then you should
rise it to +5 or +10.
