FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DiscreetFX Seeking Talented Hardware/Software Engineers For Contract Work

Chicago, Illinois ? December 1st, 2004 -- Visual FX company DiscreetFX LLC Inc., is now accepting bids on two new Amiga/MorphOS projects and is seeking talented Amiga/MorphOS Engineers.

Project #1 US0: This will be a USB to Amiga Floppy drive interface including software driver/plug-in for WinUAE and if required Amiga OS & MorphOS. Engineer will design hardware and determine what software drivers will need to be coded. If possible drive designation will be user selectable from DF0-DF3: An external Amiga floppy drive will be required.

Project # 2 AmiWire & MorphWire: Firewire stack for AmigaOS & MorphOS. Software developer will need to create a Firewire stack that works with AmigaOne running Amiga OS 4.0, Pegasos II running MorphOS and Mediator PCI with a PCI Firewire card on classic Amiga systems.

DiscreetFX will finance the development of both of these projects to completion based on the contractors that win the bid for the jobs. Contractors will be reviewed based on programming/hardware development skills and an agreed upon price for their work. The winning bidder may not be the lowest bidder. Previous Amiga/MorphOS experience will also be strongly examined. Bids from the USA, Europe, Poland, Russia, Worldwide are accepted and welcome. When projects are complete they will be sold on the DiscreetFX website with royalty payments going to contractors for each sale. This is in addition to the agreed upon payment made to start and complete the projects. DiscreetFX will retain the rights to AmiWire. MorphWire, & US0: but will share profits from each sale with contractors. If contractors do a nice job they will be considered for further work and projects. Interested developers should contact DiscreetFX @ hr ?at? -discreetfx- ?dot- com

Now thats what I like to see, company's developing for the Amiga again.

would be good if the US0: thing could take a PC floppy as well to replace those old knackered Amiga drives

And I wonder whats happening with that Open Toaster stuff, is he by chance getting the firewire so it can be used as a source for Open Toaster (possibly re-compiled for A1/MOrphos)?

All pure speculation of course

Mark

W00t! Good work DiscreetFX - just the kind of offers/incentives that we need to get people making stuff again!

Shame that I have as much hardware/software engineering talent as a mollusc...

Good! Very good indeed.

I want this Firewire stack

Of course I would also like to see software using it: how about a video editing suite?
Like Mainactor (was once a great image processing prog for Amigas) now Windows and Linux Video Editing software!

What about G-REX? If a Pegasos Version is possible then it should also possible to make a G-REX Version for AmigaOS/MorphOS.

djbase:G-rex is dead and this was said long ago and Hyperion WILL not support this hack as there is NO hw info regarding it ...the usual Phase5/DCE tactics...

Do dont expect OS4 for it.

I dont care what Hyperion will do or not. We are talking about Fireware Stack from DiscreetFX and as long the PCI Library in G-REX and Pegasos is the same this should not be a problem to compile it for.

So please if you dont have any clue be silent.

Where do I send the money for the OS4 native FireWire stack? This is great news. Let's hope this is only the beginning of a series of 3rd party initiatives. Hyperion can't do everything so I expect 3rd parties to pick up the slack and make a few bucks in the process. If you build it OS4 native, I know I will buy it.

hmmm, its all well and good having the stack (I suppose it would allow external hard drives) but without software to use the devices you put on it, its a bit useless, which is why I hope something like Open Toaster or the Ami project on the website is ported/a success to allow the use of digital Video cameras and the like.

People, a word of warning, this is NOT the thread to engage in petty argumentation. Do not pursue that path, it will not be tolerated (and you know who you are).

Me too! Don't discount the speed increase for external drives compared to the USB 1.1 ports on the A1. There are only so many PCI slots after all... This is good news.

Right, you have to start with a workable Firewire stack before anyone can write apps to use it. This is a great project, and I wish them the best, even if I don't personally use Firewire, I know it is an important component to have.

Um Guys?

This Firewire thingy.. is it anything like a specialist piece of softwaer, that can only be used for one or two specialised routines?

OR..

Is it like USB, MIAMI etc.. YOU just have to write One handler, and ANY piece of software can use its function? FireWire Hard drives, like USB mass storage?.. Scanners?.. Video cards?.. All just forms of manipulating and storing information, Firewire is just a method for getting the information from one place to another?

Please guys.. every time I hear the.. We Need apps for this function.. its, the cry of the Masses once more. 8(

Please guys, Think AMIGA. Think library code that can be used, and reused, like OpenURL.library.

I access my favourite pages on the NET, with SimpleHTML.. and even Multiview, because of the HTTP.datatype, and OpenURL.library.

Please try to stop the slide to massive monolithic bloated microsoft (Linux) style cores. Amigas are for fun, stick whatever code you want in, if the machine crashes, rename the new code, rename the old code, working machine. 8)

RodTerl

StreamLine on Aminet, auto optimises code thats executed. Is there any chance that this can be used to optimise binaries at runtime, for specific machines? Even using GA programming and millisecond projective execution to allow each induvidual machine to Grow its own unique code base, with common core (DNA)? 8)

If required??? Or course it's required!!! We can then free plenty of desk space by giving away ye olde Amigas!

If it's like a driver device add in, shouldn't all programs be able to read/write to it?
Just like adding in weird drives is now in AMIGA.
pc0: for pc floppy disks, then you just write out to the dev driver.
You could add that into Opus . FIR1: maybe :)
