Software News   Software News : Remote Desktop client compatible with OS4 released
   posted by HammerD on 10-Jan-2005 14:19:35 (7329 reads)
I am happy to announce the release of an updated Remote Desktop client that works with OS4 and OS 3.9. Remote desktop (using the rdp protocol) allows an Amiga computer to connect, via full screen or a window, to a Windows XP Pro computer or Windows server for remote control of that system. Similar in concept to VNC.

You may download the client from the website:

Remote Desktop Support Site

Thanks to everyone who helped with this port and of course the main programmer Martin Blom.

As always, you are welcome to upload it to OS4Depot ;)

Windows XP Pro computer or Windows server you say, so win2k pro can't do this then?

Check out the FAQ on the website - your answer is there :)

I didn't want to put it on OS4 depot as the current release is not OS4 native. Remote Desktop uses OpenSSL which is not available (yet) for OS4. We tried a native compile but it didn't work.

Nevertheless, the 68k version works well under OS4.

@HammerD

Aha, the old "works with os4" confusion, sorry :)

(Wishes even more that 68k support in os4 was dropped)

I dont think so (unless you use 3rd party tools I believe...) - you need a Windows Server (2000/2003) to do that...

RDP works on Windows 2000, you can use RDP with Terminal Services if you wish.

You are correct, but it must be Windows 2000 server with Terminal Services installed. Not Pro.

Howdy HammerD

Superb job, couldnt wait until this OS4 version came out, i currently own AmigaOne and several windows Computers around the house including my new laptop. I use remote Desktops ALOT due to only having one good quality/size monitor in my room.

heres a snap shot of my AmigaOne using your RDesktop port connected to a Windows 2003 Server(Win2003Serv) and my main WindowsXP Professional computer(XPDuron).

have to say even if this is an early version it works lovely and fast

Excellent photo :) I am glad that it is working for you! I personally think this is an important application for OS4. Interoperability and connectivity to other major OS's is important.

I agree, this app must be released with OS4 (author permitting)

Excellent! Seems whenever I check AW/OS4 depot now there's some new or updated software available. Hoping this is going to be the trend for 2005 and beyond . This app looks great.

Hi,

This sounds great!!!

But, you know what? I read the readme file that came with the package and still don't have a clue how I can use it.

Is there any "Remote Desktop Client for Dummies" doc that I can use?

Thanks a lot,
Firbodi

Basically you must have

1) Access to a Windows XP Pro, Windows 2003 server, or Windows 2000 Server (with terminal services installed). Many people also have a Windows XP Pro computer at home

2) You must enable remote desktop on the Windows Host - Right click "My Computer", select the Remote tab, check off tick box to enable remote access, add yourself as a allowable user if you aren't already there

3) Go back to Amiga, edit tooltypes of Living Room PC icon, add:

USER= (your username)
SERVER= (ip address of your windows box)

Mine says:

USER=develand
SERVER=192.168.1.2
DEPTH=16
(FULLSCREEN)

Double click on living room PC icon and it should bring up your Windows machine in a Window on the workbench. Login and enjoy.

Use the REMOTEAUDIO tooltype to control whether or not to bring the PC's audio forward to the Amiga.

Darren

Well the source code is on the site so someone with OS4 just needs to recompile it

Doooh !!! It seems you've been faster than me : I'm also working on rdesktop

However I was using AmiSSL to replace OpenSSL and had in mind to do a native OS4 which can eventually compile for OS3.9 (I was hoping a big speedup in refresh rates using native version on OS4

Which version of the rdesktop source did you use (I'll check what you've done this night however as I've already downloaded your sources Martin's version was based upon a very old version, I was working on 1.3.1.

Hey, congrats :) Any chance I can try your version ? Do you have a web page for it?

The version that I have released today (and yes, Martin is still the programmer) is also based on the latest CVS sources, 1.3.1.

The reason why an OS4 native version doesn't work is because of OpenSSL. If you can change that to AmiSSL then an OS4 native version is possible. I already had an OS4 programmer compile it natively for OS4 but because of the OpenSSL it didn't work.

For OS 3.9 it doesn't matter I understand.

There is also an identified bug (#1601) in OS4 that prevents clipboard support. When that OS4 bug is fixed clipboard support should work with the existing build.
