News   News : AmigaOS DevContest Kicks off!
posted by elwood on 14-Feb-2005 13:16:03 (5890 reads)
Brave AmigaOS coders stand up!

So you think AmigaOS is great? Then bring some great products to it!
This is your chance to contribute to AmigaOS and put your name into the hall of fame. You'll get popularity, recognition from the community and last but by no means least, you'll get the hardware to run your beloved new AmigaOS on.

This contest was made to help the platform by bringing cool products to it. Its here to help you
to work for something and create the best program of all. This is why there are strict rules and there is a validation process in order to enter.
Only the best apps will be accepted because the Amiga community deserves the best software.

You are encouraged to form a group if you feel the need to. So you can "hire" coders and betatesters to shape up a great project.
Also consider that when your program is done, you may make it commercial or why not licence it to some Amiga company. Who knows?

What are you waiting for? Go code!

Click here to read more and to enter.

Allright, Let´s kick it.

Hope this will generate some really useful apps.

Hmm time until Dec2005, better getting started then.

Great initiative btw.

Cool - shame that it doesn't give me enough time to buy an A1, learn to code in C, and to develop and test an application...

Good luck to all participants, though!

This is a great initiative, well done to the organisers. I look forward to any handy apps that come out of this.

Please define "OS4 Team". I understand it means core developers but what about betatesters?

Good point. It means OS4 "Developers". Betatesters can enter the contest but they shouldn't stop betatesting, ok ?
Website fixed, thanks.

@other
Thanks for your support. Spread the word in every websites you know!
And of course if you want to contribute even with a few $$, that would be cool too.

yes, we could all donate via paypal the 2nd and 3rd prize. To make it more
interresting for coders to join the contest.

You must code under GCC (available in the OS4 SDK) or VBCC (available here).

okey

You must use Picasso96.

okey no problem

Quote:
Use OS4-specific features (hooks, reaction classes, vitualised memory...etc). It means you must use Reaction.

ahhh I refuse to use Reaction.

Quote:
Use OS4 newlib runtime library

why not clib2?

Quote:
You must produce an OS4 binary using a cross-compiler available on the OS4 SDK (soon publically available).

I have an A1, does that meed I cant use that.

Why are no games allowed? An additional contest?

Alex.

@alexw

Probably because there is a severe lack of certain types of application software on OS4 at the moment. This is a situation that this contest is attempting to address.

Kind regards,

Francis.

Yes, as I've already mentioned to Philippe, allowing only ReAction to be used as your main GUI may put a lot of people off. It's simply not good enough IMO. But, we'll see what happens...

I hope I'm proved wrong, but wasn't WookieChat re-written using MUI for this very reason?

Anyway, I don't want a debate about MUI/ReAction... I hope this project produces a lot of good applications for OS4.

I agree that the MUI/Reaction things isn't optimal. It would be understandable if there wasn't an OS 4 native version of MUI but since it does exist and is actively maintained I don't see a reason to forbid the usage of MUI.

I guess we'll just have to stop our game project then and make a utility instead

Then why not create new Reaction classes? Ok, who here can beat MUI???

I think it's usefull to add a "Why Reaction?" entry in the FAQ:
MUI is nice but it belongs to a third party coder and an operating system can't rely on it. It means that if for a reason or another one day AmigaOS owners won't be able to use MUI anymore, they will be stuck. This is why they had to use a proprietary solution: Reaction.
As an example, now that M$ based "everything" on DirectX, what would happen if an hypotetical owner of DirectX would decide to stop its partnership with M$? They would either go bankrupt or will have to spend a lot of $$ to replace DirectX.

Now if MUI became free (i.e. not GPL) for use anywhere, I would be happy to remove this restriction from the contest.

If I have to buy an AmigaOne OS 4.0 to develop a software for AmigaOne to get an AmigaOne as a prize wouldn't it make sense to just buy an AmigaOne OS 4.0 and not bother enter the contest but develop a software for yourself? I mean unless hyperion releases SDK 4.0 to be used in GCC under WinUAE for example, to develop softwares for AmigaOne OS 4.0- or SDK 4.0 for Windows to develop Softwares for AmigaOne, I think there is no way anyway can enter the contest. If I am to save enough money to buy me an AmigaOne to enter the contest, then I would not bother enter the contest at all.

@Toaks

Good spot. Then I added:
You can't submit a project that is already running and used by OS4 users. But you don't have to wait for the deadline to release beta versions of your project. Since it has been accepted in the contest, you can release demos, screenshots or whatever. Doing so you can attract new developers, betatesters.

Exactly. This will happen so you can start coding right away and when the SDK is available port your project to OS4.

Thanks.
